Gentry has filed a petiton for rehearing, I assume once/if that is denied the state will seek an execution date

I'm guessing 2 - 3 weeks for SCOTUS deny rehearing. A January/February execution date. I had hoped for a December X date. Perhaps there is still the slightest chance of that, if SCOTUS moves expeditiously in denying a rehearing.

Hasn't it been a while since anyone has been executed in Washington?

BTW, the great State of Washington is the only state in the union with an active gallows. LI is the default method. There is some thought Mr. Gentry could throw a wrench in the works by requesting to be hanged. As Mr. Gentry is African American this could put the state of Washington in an odd public relations position to say the least. Knowing Washingtonians however. The smart money says they call the bluff.

If Gentry asked to be hanged he would actually be doing the state a massive favour as it would bypass all potential method-of-execution litigation.

I could see that as being problematic..public relations wise. I still think firing squad is the most efficient.

I'm not up to date on Washington's LI litigation history. Nothing jumps out as a serious threat or problem. Though I agree with your point entirely.

I was thinking in terms of drug availability. If Gentry elects for hanging then he loses the grounds to challenge the constitutionality of that method of execution (Stewart v LaGrand, 526 US 115 (1999)) and there is no shortage of hemp rope.

Gentry's rehearing petition will be on the agenda for the US Supreme Court's November 26th conference.
