2006 murder case goes to trial
MORGANTON --
Almost four years after the death of a 21-year-old man, his accused killer’s trial is set to begin this week.
Jason Timothy Gettys, 34, was charged with the murder of Stephen Drew Snoddy a few days after Christmas in 2006.
Gettys was arrested and charged the same day of Snoddy’s death. A grand jury indicted him within a week.
On Monday, Judge Beverly Beal heard motions from defense attorney Mark Killian and spoke to potential jurors.
Beal told potential jurors that the death penalty is not being sought in this case. Jury selection starts today.
On Dec. 29, 2006, Gettys called Morganton Department of Public Safety from Big Daddy’s Convenience Store on U.S. 70. He told investigators at the time he wanted to talk about a fight.
Gettys led the police to a ditch on Dixie Boulevard where they found Snoddy’s body. At the time, police said evidence shows the suspect killed Snoddy at the scene.
Hamby’s Towing, which is located nearby, turned in its surveillance video tapes to police.
Gettys and Snoddy worked together at Environmental Inks and Coatings, company officials said in 2006. Both men had worked for the company for less than a year.
