Fredrick Hedgepeth Pleads Guilty in 2010 NC Murder of Elderly Couple, Receives 2 Life Sentences

Man Charged In Double Shooting Pleads Not Guilty

A man charged with killing a husband and wife in early June pleaded not guilty on Wednesday.

Fredrick Hedgepeth, 25, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of 72-year-old Jerry Bullin and 70-year-old Jo Anne Bullin.

Prosecutors said Wednesday that they will seek the death penalty against Hedgepeth.

Police said the couple met Hedgepeth met at Ingram MotorSports, near Salisbury, because he expressed interest in buying a car they were trying to sell. According to police, Hedgepeth then shot and killed the Bullins in a robbery attempt.

Jo Anne Bullin made a call to the couple’s daughter once they arrived at the business, police said, and told her where they were and that something didn’t seem right. After that call, police said the couple’s daughter made several attempts to contact her parents but couldn’t reach them. She then called 911.

When sheriff’s deputies arrived at the business, they said they saw the Bullins’ bodies through a window and had to force their way in through a locked fence.

Hedgepeth worked at Ingram MotorSports at the time of the shootings, according to deputies.

Deputies said the couple’s daughter informed them that they drove to the area from Conover to try to sell their car. That information led deputies to arrest Hedgepeth, they said.

Man pleads guilty in Conover couple's death

A man charged with killing a Conover couple in June pleaded guilty to their deaths on Monday afternoon.

Fredrick Hedgepeth, 25, pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon for the murder of Jerry Wayne Bullin, 72, and Jo Anne Adkins Bullin, 70.

On June 2, the Conover couple drove their 2009 Honda Accord to Ingram MotorSports on Auction Drive near I-85 in Salisbury, believing that they were meeting someone who would buy their car. Instead, they were robbed and shot, their bodies placed inside Ingram MotorSports along with the second car that they drove to Salisbury. The 2009 Accord was not found at the scene.

Police were alerted to the crime because Jo Anne called one of her daughters prior to her death, saying that something didn’t seem right. Her daughter tried to call her mother back several times, but her mother didn’t answer. When her daughter couldn’t reach her, she called the police.

Hedgepeth worked at Ingram MotorSports. The business was locked, meaning someone with a key would have had to put the Bullins’ inside.

The Billins’ Honda Accord was found at the home of Hedgepeth’s girlfriend, Alyssa Watts. She has been charged with two counts of accessory to murder after the fact.

Hedgepeth agreed to plea guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of robbery, and in exchange, the state would not seek the death penalty, said Bill Kenerly, district attorney for Rowan County.

For the murder of Jerry Bullin, who was also robbed of his car and cell phone, Judge Richard Doughton sentenced Hedgepeth to life in prison without parole, Kenerly said. For the murder of Jo Anne Adkins Bullin, who was also robbed of her cell phone, Doughton sentenced Hedgepeth to life without parole at the expiration of his first sentence.

About 25 members of the Bullins’ family came to court Monday to see Hedgepeth sentenced.

“The family indicated to me that they were satisfied,” Kenerly said.

He said he was not surprised that Hedgepeth received two life sentences.

“The evidence was so overwhelming,” Kenerly said. “I’m surprised not that it happened, but that it happened so soon. I expected it two years from now. It’s a horribly sad, senseless double homicide.”

Hedgepeth did not speak at the sentencing, although through his attorney, he offered his condolences to the Bullin family.
