Johnston prosecutor to seek death penalty in 2 murder cases

Johnston County District Attorney Susan Doyle said Thursday that she plans to seek the death penalty in two high-profile murder cases.

Jonathan Douglas Richardson, 21, of Smithfield will face the death penalty if he's convicted in the abuse and death of 4-year-old Teghan Skiba in July. He's charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse. According to search warrants, Teghan had severe head injuries and bruises, cuts and human bite marks all over her body when Richardson brought her to the hospital. She died several days later.

The girl's mother, Helen Reyes, was charged with felony negligent child abuse causing serious bodily injury. Investigators say she left Richardson to care for her daughter in a barn without running water while she went to New Mexico for Army Reserve training

New charges filed in Smithfield child torture case

Smithfield, N.C. — A Smithfield man charged last year with torturing a 4-year-old girl who later died now faces child sex charges in the case.

A Johnston County grand jury this week indicted Jonathan Douglas Richardson on charges of child rape and sexual offense with a child.

Richardson, 22, of 750 Old Sanders Road, was charged last July with first-degree murder and child abuse in connection with the death of Teghan Skiba.

Teghan died of blunt force head injuries, and authorities said she had cuts, lacerations, bite marks and sexual assault injuries.

The girl had been living with her mother, Helen Reyes, and Richardson in a barn on his grandparents' property for four weeks before Reyes left her in his care to go to New Mexico for military training.

Richardson told Johnston County investigators that he "lost it" and whipped the girl with a cord after she went to the bathroom in the bed they were sharing, according to search warrants. He explained that he is "bipolar and little things set him off."

Investigators said they determined that the physical abuse of Teghan, which included forcing her to consume alcohol, started before Reyes left town.

Reyes, 26, of 5255 Passenger Place in Raleigh, is charged with negligent child abuse in connection with her daughter's death.

Jury Selection Underway For Man Charged In Death Of 4-Year-Old

Jonathan Douglas Richardson of Smithfield listens as a potential juror is questioned Thursday in Harnett County Superior Court. Richardson is charged with first degree murder in Johnston County. Jurors are being selected in Harnett County because of pre-trial pubilicity the 2010 case has created.

As of Friday morning, a total of 5 jurors had been selected in the first-degree murder trial of Jonathan Douglas Richardson.

Richardson, 23, of Old Sanders Road, Smithfield is charged in the July 2010 alleged torture death of 4 year-old Teghan Skiba.

Because of pretrial publicity, Superior Court Judge Tom Lock ordered jurors for the trial be selected in Harnett County. After the jury is selected in Lillington, they will be bused to Johnston County once the trial begins.

There is no timeline as to when the 12-member jury and 2 alternates would be impaneled.

According to law enforcement officials in 2010, Richardson was living in a barn with Teghan Skiba’s mother, Helen Roxanne Reyes, after they met sometime earlier at a Selma club. The barn had no running water or a bathroom.

Reyes reportedly left on July 6, 2010 to attend out-of-state training for the Army Reserves and entrusted Richardson to care for her young daughter.

Ten days later, on July 16, 2010, Richardson took Teghan to the hospital claiming she had fallen. Doctors, however, alleged the young girl’s injuries were not consistent with a fall. Among the injuries were bite marks, cuts, bruises, and head trauma. She also showed signs of sexual assault.

Teghan died a few days later in the hospital. Richardson, who was initially charged with felony child abuse, had those charges upgraded to first-degree murder following her death.

The Smithfield man charged with torturing the 4-year-old daughter of his girlfriend begins to learn his fate Monday. Opening statements are scheduled in the murder trial of Jonathan Douglas Richardson.

In July 2010, Richardson, of 750 Old Sanders Road, took Teghan Skiba to a Smithfield hospital, claiming she had fallen off a bed. Doctors discovered Teghan had bite marks, head trauma and evidence of sexual assault. They transferred her to UNC Hospitals where she died three days later.

Richardson is charged with first-degree murder and child abuse while his then-girlfriend and Teghan's mother, Helen Reyes, faces a charge of negligent child abuse.

Because of the publicity that surrounded Teghan's death, jurors were selected from Harnett County. They will be bused to Smithfield each day for the trial.

Investigators found that Reyes had left the child with Richardson when she went to New Mexico for military training.

Richardson told Johnston County investigators that he "lost it" and whipped the girl with a cord after she went to the bathroom in the bed they were sharing, according to search warrants. He explained that he is "bipolar and little things set him off."

If convicted, he could face the death penalty.

Investigators said they determined that the physical abuse of Teghan, which included forcing her to consume alcohol, started before Reyes left town.

Trauma doc details Teghan Skiba's injuries for jury

When Teghan Skiba arrived at North Carolina Children's Hospital in July 2010, she was "minutes away from dying" a doctor who treated the 4-year-old said Friday in the murder trial of Jonathan Douglas Richardson.

Richardson first took Teghan to Johnston Memorial Hospital on July 16, 2010, claiming she hit her head while jumping on the bed. Doctors and nurses there determined she needed more intensive care and had her transferred to UNC Hospitals, where Dr. Keith Kocis was among those who cared for her until her death.

"She was so critically ill, so people were acting very, very quickly," Kocis, a specialist in critical pediatric care, told the court.

Kocis recalled how his "red-trauma pager" sounded on a Friday afternoon.

"There was essentially no part of her body that was spared. That is something Ihad never seen in my over 25 years," he said, describing bite marks, whip marks, lesions, scabs and scars as jurors looked at images of Teghan projected on a big screen.

Kocis said he knew even if his team could save her life, Teghan, who had a blood clot in her brain, would have suffered severe impairments.

Teghan died July 19, 2010. An autopsy pinpointed the cause of death as bleeding in her skull from blunt force head injuries. The medical examiner's report said the girl had suffered extensive abuse.

Richardson is charged with first-degree murder, felony child abuse, sexual offense with a child and kidnapping, and he could face the death penalty if convicted.

His defense lawyers say Richardson, 25, was left to care for Teghan when her mother, Helen Reyes, went to train with the military.

In laying out their case, Richardson's lawyers said he lacked experience and parenting skills, and they blame Teghan's death on Richardson's undiagnosed mental problems, his own experiences of being abused as a child and approval from Reyes, his girlfriend, that physically abusing the child was OK.

Richardson and Teghan were living in a shed on a Smithfield property owned by his grandparents. On Wednesday, jurors heard that the 15 x 13 building was filled with alcohol containers, partially eaten food, scattered clothing, urine and feces. Richardson's grandmother, Helen Creech, took the stand late Friday afternoon and told the jury that his behavior as a child was not abnormal.

Dramatic testimony from nurse in second day of Teghan Skiba murder trial

SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WTVD) -- There was captivating new testimony Tuesday in the trial of a man accused of torturing and killing a four-year- old girl in Johnston County.

In July 2010, Teghan Skiba was admitted to the Johnston Medical Center by then-21-year-old Jonathan Richardson after he claimed she had fallen off the bed. However, doctors found she had cuts, bruises, and bite marks on her body.

Skiba died days later. An autopsy revealed that the girl died from a blow to the head.

A nurse testified that she went after Richardson in the emergency room. Mary Alison Butler said she jumped on top of him, grabbed his neck, and tried to rip out his throat.

Butler said she was overcome with anger and adrenalin when looking at the extensive injuries the child had and then confronted Richardson.

"It was horrible. We see a lot of stuff. At that point I couldn't take any more and I looked at him and said, "Oh my God,'" said Butler.

Richardson is accused of torturing and killing Teghan Skiba in the summer of 2010 over a ten day period while Teghan's mom, Helen Roxanne Reyes, was deployed for training in the Army Reserves.

Butler said when she confronted Richardson, he allegedly took off running trying to escape the E.R. So, she took matters into her own hands.

"He was just going to leave. So I took off after him" said Butler. "I chased him down. I came around the corner and jumped on him. I grabbed him by the throat and swung him around. I was tried to rip his esophagus out."

A detective also took the stand Tuesday to say what happened when he was dispatched to the emergency room.

Richardson is charged with first-degree murder, and felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.

Meanwhile, prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Richardson.

Reyes has been free on bond since her 2010 arrest. She is still awaiting trial.

Doctor says he 'nearly vomited' upon seeing tortured 4-year-old Teghan Skiba's body

SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WTVD) -- A pediatric doctor testifying in the murder trial of Jonathan Richardson on Friday, told the courtroom he "nearly vomited" when he saw 4-year-old Teghan Skiba.

Dr. Keith Kocis, who specializes in critically ill children, was the attending physician at UNC's intensive care unit for children when the 4-year-old Johnston County girl was brought to the hospital in July 2010.

"Startling is not the right word, ah certainly deeply disturbing is again is is not how I truly felt, ah it was a very visceral response like I was going to vomit," said Kocis.

Jonathan Richardson is accused of beating and sexually assaulting his girlfriend's daughter over a 10-day period while her mother, Helen Roxanne Reyes, was out-of-state for Army Reserves training.

The then-21-year-old Richardson had originally taken Skiba to Johnston Medical Center -- she was later transferred to UNC-- claiming the girl had fallen off the bed. However, doctors found she had cuts, bruises, a head wound, and bite marks on her body.

Skiba died days later from her injuries.

On Friday, Kocis said he had never seen injuries like that on any child in his 25 years as a doctor.

"We saw this small frail girl who you know from her status she was pale, she was poorly perfused, in shock, those parts ... don't portray how beaten this child was when she ... I had a first look at her," Kocis said. "These scars, these whip marks, these injuries to her skin that were all over her body, I mean there was essentially no part of her body that was spared."

His testimony got pretty graphic at times when he began to detail the extent of the girl's injuries.

At one point, the jury was asked to leave the room while the prosecutor went over some evidence with the doctor and discussed showing the jury video and photos of the injuries.

Kocis said Skiba could have been violently shaken, because she had brain injuries similar to other cases. He said he was only able tell she had brain function by poking a needle in her foot. He said her foot responded little, but said the girl had very little brain function.

"We knew that there was a significant, ah, inter-cranial, ah, brain injury, bleeding in the brain on the left side and it was so severe in impacting the brain it was swelling," said Kocis.

The doctor testified that Skiba was one step away from being brain dead.

"Her basic, very basic, ah, functions of the brain - what we call the brain stem functions that keep you alive - ah, were - thinking about it type of activities - were deranged and failing," he explained.

He also said the girl had a lot of acid in her blood from possibly poor circulation of air and that Skiba was barely hanging on when she arrived to UNC.

Authorities have said the 4 year old was tortured inside an air conditioned barn behind Richardson's grandparents home, where she was living with her mother and Richardson. There was no running water, no bathroom, and just a single air mattress on the floor to sleep on.

On Wednesday, a crime scene investigator described to the jury every single piece of evidence that she uncovered in the shed, which was littered with trash.

"I observed the interior of the shed to be cluttered with what appeared to be an odor of urine and/or feces," Former CSI Investigator Charlotte Fournier said. "There was an air mattress on the floor in the south east corner of the room with a few pillows on top of it. Located on the floor between the chair and treadmill, there was a laptop and a brown extension cord with exposed ends."

Fournier also said she found underwear - size 14 - with suspected blood, and a piece of tissue inside with suspect blood on it.

Richardson has been charged with first-degree murder, and felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against him.

I just watched this video and it's truly disturbing and this poor deputy is probably going to be haunted for the rest of his life. The worst part is there are parts where the defendant is smiling and laughing. I hope Jonathan Richardson gets the death penalty and I hope I live long enough to see it carried out.

Dentist tells jurors he prayed Teghan Skiba would die

SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WTVD) -- A dentist testifying Monday in the murder trial of 25-year-old Jonathan Richardson told jurors that after seeing the horrific injuries on 4-year-old Teghan Skiba's body he prayed she wouldn't live.

"I immediately said a prayer that she would die," said Dr. Richard Barbaro.

Barbaro went on to say the case is the worst thing he's seen in his 30 career in forensic odontology, and that he has never seen so many bite marks on a person.

Richardson - the former boyfriend of Skiba's mother Helen Roxanne Reyes - was supposed to be caring for the child over a 10-day period while Reyes was out of state for Army Reserves training in July 2010.

Prosecutors say Skiba was tortured, sexually assaulted, and beaten inside an air conditioned shed behind Richardson's grandparents' home, where she was living. There was no running water, no bathroom, and just a single air mattress on the floor to sleep on.

Richardson took Skiba to Johnston Medical Center claiming she had fallen off the bed. However, doctors found she had cuts, bruises, a head wound, and bite marks on her body. Skiba died days later from her injuries.

Richardson is charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

Richardson's defense attorneys have argued that client is mentally ill and that the Johnston County girl's death was a tragic accident.

On the witness stand Monday, Dr. Barbaro told jurors that the bite marks on Skiba's body were an exact match for Richardson. He said some were so extreme that the flesh was literally torn off.

He said there were more than 60 marks that covered her all over.

"Bite mark injuries would inflict a lot of pain," said Barbaro. "The pain of tearing off skin would be excruciating."
