Police seek info on anniversary of Morgan Harrington disappearance

Monday marks the second anniversary of the disappearance of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington, and state homicide investigators are using the occasion to encourage the public to come forward with information about her death.

Harrington, 20, vanished after attending a Metallica concert in Charlottesville on Oct. 17, 2009. At about 8:20 p.m., she left the concert at the University of Virginia campus, but was not allowed back in. She called her friends on her cell phone. At around 9:30 p.m., she was seen walking on on the Copeley Road Ridge and then hitchhiking for a ride from passing traffic.

Her body was found on Jan. 26, 2010, in a remote field by the landowner of Anchorage Farm in southern Albemarle County along Route 29.

"We are especially interested in hearing from those individuals familiar with the Anchorage Farm property, " said Lt. Joe Rader of the Virginia State Police. "A detail that may seem insignificant to one person may well be of critical importance to investigators."

Harrington, 20, was dressed that night in a black "Pantera" T-shirt, black mini-skirt and knee-high black boots. She was wearing a distinctive Crystal necklace made of large crystal chain links, which police have not recovered.

Harrington's "Pantera" T-shirt was found Nov. 11, 2009, in front of a row of apartments in Charlottesville.

DNA evidence was recovered during the course of the Harrington investigation that forensically links it to a 2005 sexual assault in Fairfax City. Fairfax City Police developed a composite sketch of the assailant. Police are still working to identitify the suspect.

Harringtons File Lawsuit against John Paul Jones Arena Security

According to online court records, Gil Harrington and the estate of Morgan Harrington have filed a lawsuit against Regional Marketing Concepts Inc., which operates under the name RMC Events. RMC provides security at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville.

Morgan Harrington was attending a Metallica concert at John Paul Jones Arena the night she disappeared. Police have said at some point, Harrington left the arena. When she tried to reenter, security guards refused to let her back in, citing a no-reentry policy.

According to The Roanoke Times, the lawsuit is for $3.5 million. It was filed on October 11.

The news comes on the two-year anniversary of Harrington's disappearance. To mark the event, Dan and Gil Harrington returned to the Copeley Road Bridge in Charlottesville, the last place 20-year-old Morgan Dana Harrington was seen, to continue their push to find her killer.

On the evening of Oct. 17, 2009, Harrington was attending a Metallica concert at John Paul Jones Arena. She left the arena at approximately 8:30 p.m. After talking to her friends on her cell phone, she then walked through the University Hall parking lot and was seen in a parking lot next to Lannigan Field. At around 9:30 p.m., she was seen walking on the bridge and then hitchhiking for a ride from passing traffic.

Monday morning, the former Virginia Tech student's parents presented paintings to law enforcement personnel as a thank you for their hard work in trying to solve the case. Though Harrington's body has been found, the hunt for her killer continues.

“We will leave no stone unturned,” said a resilient Gil Harrington. “That's what you do when you're looking for the filth and the slime that festers in the dark. And once we pick those stones up, we will hurl them as hard as we can.”

The Harringtons also discussed a new national campaign they launched, Help Save The Next Girl. The multimedia campaign aims at bringing awareness to the vulnerability of young women and empowering them to make the best choices for their own safety - and the safety of their friends.

Since initiating its investigation, Virginia State Police have pursued hundreds of tips and leads as investigators continue to aggressively pursue the ongoing case. State police are also still encouraging the public to come forward with information. Harrington's skeletal remains were later discovered Jan. 26, 2010, in a remote field on an Albemarle County farm along Route 29.

"We are especially interested in hearing from those individuals familiar with the Anchorage Farm property, and observations of unusual behavior in that area between Oct. 17, 2009, and Jan. 26, 2010," said Lt. Joe Rader, Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Appomattox Field Office. "A detail that may seem insignificant to one person may well be of critical importance to investigators and the information needed to advance this investigation even further."

Harrington was dressed that night in a black T-shirt with the word "Pantera" spelled out in tan letters, black mini-skirt, black tights, and knee-high black boots. She was wearing a distinctive Swarovski Crystal necklace made up of large crystal chain links, which investigators have yet to recover. Harrington's "Pantera" T-shirt was found Nov. 11, 2009, in front of a row of apartments along 15th Street NW near Grady Avenue in Charlottesville.

DNA evidence was recovered during the course of the Harrington investigation that forensically links it to a 2005 City of Fairfax sexual assault of a young Northern Virginia woman. Fairfax City Police were able to develop a composite sketch of the assailant. State and Fairfax City police are still working to identify the suspect.

The University of Virginia also released a statement to students on the anniversary, saying the tragic story can act as a reminder of the continued attention we need to pay to safety, both individually and as a university community. The University encouraged all students to overcome the bystander effect and speak up if you see actions that could endanger others.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Jefferson Area Crime Stoppers at 434-977-4000; or the Virginia State Police at 434-352-3467 or by email at bci-appomattox@vsp.virginia.gov. A $150,000 reward ($100,000 from Crime Stoppers and $50,000 from Metallica) remains for anyone who can provide information that helps break the case.

Families of Morgan Harrington and Bethany Decker Unite to Warn Others
Families of missing women come together to prevent future tragedy

The families of two young women who disappeared are now coming together in an effort to prevent another family from feeling their loss.

Relatives of Morgan Harrington and Bethany Decker spent Saturday morning outside a Giant food store in Fairfax County.

Morgan Harrington disappeared after a Metallica concert in Charlottesville in 2009. Her body was found in a field in Albemarle County months later.

Police say DNA evidence has linked Harrington's case to a 2005 sexual assault in Fairfax County. That crime was committed on a woman who was walking home from the same grocery store where the families gathered Saturday.

Harrington's parents have started a campaign called "Help Save the Next Girl." On Saturday, they passed out fliers to shoppers warning them of what they see as potential danger. “There’s a predator somewhere in this area between Charlottesville and Fairfax who’s at the top of his game. And we want to make sure people know to look out for one another so he’s not able to create such pain for another family,” said Gil Harrington, Morgan’s mother.

Bethany Decker disappeared in January of 2011. She was several months pregnant.

Police have no evidence that has linked Harrington's case with Decker's.

Jesse Matthew Jr. pleads guilty to killing Hannah Graham, Morgan Harrington

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The former cab driver who kidnapped and killed two Virginia college students won’t pay for the crimes with his life.

Prosecutors withdrew a capital murder charge against Jesse Matthew Jr. as part of a plea deal Wednesday. After Matthew pleaded guilty to the 2014 murder of Hannah Graham and the 2009 murder of Morgan Harrington, a judge sentenced him to four consecutive life sentences. Under the agreement, there’s no possibility of parole.

“This agreement serves the interest of justice,” Albemarle Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Tracci told reporters. “It ensures public safety and offender accountability.”

Both victims’ families said they supported the deal and were grateful they wouldn’t have to go through a trial.

“Our overriding priority was that Matthew will never be able again to inflict his depravity on young women,” father John Graham told reporters. “Matthew’s deeds show that he is far too dangerous ever to be allowed to be free.”

Gil Harrington, Morgan’s mother, thanked investigators and members of the community for not giving up.

“For 6˝ years, you all were determined and resolute to find the top-tier predator that hunted in this community. That process has been successfully completed today,” she said. “Your dedicated efforts were incredibly helpful and sustaining for us personally. They say it takes a village to raise a child. I know it takes one to bury a child.”

    ‘She did change the world’

Graham, an 18-year-old University of Virginia student, went missing in September 2014. Authorities found her remains the next month on abandoned property 8 miles from where the college sophomore was last seen.

After investigators said they believed he was the last person to see Graham before she went missing, Matthew was taken into custody.

Prosecutors had said they planned to seek the death penalty if the Graham case went to trial.

On Wednesday, Graham’s father described his daughter as an optimistic person who loved studying at the University of Virginia and was making plans for the future when her life was “mercilessly cut short” by Matthew.

“His evil deprived the world of a great talent, but Hannah’s enduring gift to us all is that she enabled this wicked man to be apprehended and convicted. She did change the world,” he said, “but at a terrible price.”

    ‘A very long journey’

Harrington, a 20-year-old Virginia Tech student, went missing in October 2009 after attending a Metallica concert in Charlottesville. Her remains were discovered on a nearby farm in January 2010.

After Graham’s disappearance, speculation surged that the two cases could be connected.

Last year, a grand jury indicted Matthew on charges of killing and kidnapping Harrington.

“The finality and accountability that has been achieved today with this plea agreement will allow our family to redirect energy into healing and recovery,” Gil Harrington told reporters Wednesday. “Both are areas that we have neglected during our quest for justice for Morgan. It has been a long, a very long journey to this point, and it has been a hard road.”

    Attorney: Matthew is sorry

Matthew pleaded guilty Wednesday to two charges of first-degree murder and two charges of abduction with intent to defile. If he violates the plea agreement, the state could choose to indict him again on a capital murder charge, Tracci said.

Last year, a judge sentenced Matthew to three life sentences for the 2005 sexual assault of a 26-year-old woman in Fairfax, Virginia.

Douglas Ramseur, an attorney who represented Matthew, said he apologized in court Wednesday on behalf of his client.

“He had me express for him in court how terribly sorry he is for everything that’s happened here, how much he loves his family and is sorry for everything that they’ve been put through because of this,” Ramseur said.

He declined to respond to questions from reporters about why Mr. Matthew had killed the women.

“Because this was a death penalty case, it was something where, at a certain point and time, Mr. Matthew couldn’t risk his life any longer, and so that’s why we took a resolution that was there,” Ramseur said. “That, unfortunately prevented a full trial that might have enlightened the community more about every issue that was at play in this case.”

A spokesman for Matthew’s family apologized to the Harrington and Graham families in a statement read outside the courthouse.

“We know that there is nothing that we can do to erase what Jesse has done,” the Rev. Louie Carr said, “but we pray that you will find in your hearts to someday forgive our loved one.”

No way do I believe these two women are his only victims.

He started raping in 2002 and right after young women went missing in that area.
"I realize this may sound harsh, but as a father and former lawman, I really don't care if it's by lethal injection, by the electric chair, firing squad, hanging, the guillotine or being fed to the lions."

“There are lots of extremely smug and self-satisfied people in what would be deemed lower down in society, who also deserve to be pulled up. In a proper free society, you should be allowed to make jokes about absolutely anything.”
