Jesse Matthew Jr. Pleads Guilty to killing Hannah Graham, Morgan Harrington

Virginia Tech Student Vanishes From Concert
    Wednesday October 21, 2009
A 20-year-old Virginia Tech junior who kept tickets to a Metallica concert on her refrigerator six months prior to the event, disappeared from the arena Saturday minutes before the concert was set to begin. Police are searching for Morgan Dana Harrington, who vanished from the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville.
Her parents said Morgan checks in with them daily and her disappearance is out of character.

Morgan was with friends at the concert but left them just before the concert was to begin. She later called them to tell them she was outside of the arena. Later, police found her purse and cellphone. The battery had been removed from the phone.

She was last seen wearing a black T-shirt with "Pantera" across the front in tan letters, a black mini skirt, black tights and black knee-high boots.

    No Evidence of a Crime

Harrington is 5-6, and 120 pounds. She has long blonde hair and blue eyes.

"Morgan is a pretty transparent kid, who's had a really close relationship with us," her father, Dan Harrington, told reporters. "I don't think there are lots of secrets, so this kind of behavior of (her) missing is not something I think we would expect."

Police, however, are treating the case as a missing person case. "We have no evidence that a crime has been committed," said Virginia State Police Lt. Joe Rader.

    MEDIA GENERAL NEWS SERVICE
    Published: October 23, 2009

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- The father of a missing Virginia Tech student said yesterday that he thinks she has been abducted, and announced that the reward for information leading to her return will be at least $100,000.

"I think Morgan was taken. I don't think she ran away," Dan Harrington said.

Staff at Carilion Clinic, where Harrington is vice president for academic affairs, raised the money, which will be administered by Crime Stoppers, he said.

State Police are asking people with information to call (434) 352-3467 or e-mail bci-appomattox@vsp.virginia.gov

Morgan Dana Harrington, 20, was last seen shortly after she left a Metallica concert at the University of Virginia's John Paul Jones Arena on Saturday night.

Her purse and her cell phone, minus its battery, were found in the area Sunday.

Metallica adds $50,000 to reward in search for student

Metallica has added $50,000 to the reward for information in the search for missing Virginia Tech student Morgan D. Harrington, her father said, raising the amount to about $150,000.

Missing Tech student’s parents fear foul play

    STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS
    Published: October 28, 2009

The parents of a Virginia Tech student who disappeared outside a Metallica concert in Charlottesville said yesterday on national television that they fear she is the victim of foul play.

Morgan Dana Harrington's parents said on NBC's "Today" show that they are devoting all their energy to finding their daughter, who was last seen Oct. 17 outside the University of Virginia's John Paul Jones Arena.

"This is probably a parent's worst nightmare," Dan Harrington said. "Clearly no one ever expects to be in this situation, and we have to hold out hope that we're going to see our daughter again."

He speculated that his daughter might have accepted a ride home with someone.

"You know kids at this age think everybody's their friend," said Gil Harrington, Morgan's mother.

Asked if they feared foul play, Gil Harrington responded: "Nothing else makes sense."

Authorities announced yesterday that several online videos they had examined didn't contain footage of Morgan Harrington as previously thought.

Police hope a $150,000 reward -- including $50,000 from Metallica -- will help generate new leads. Tips can be submitted by calling (434) 352-3467 or e-mailing bci-appomattox@vsp.virginia.gov.

Harrington's disappearance has prompted authorities to boost patrols on U.Va.'s campus this Halloween weekend.

    Family continues to seek clues

Daniel and Gil Harrington, parents of Morgan Dana Harrington, released a statement yesterday thanking the Virginia State Police Department, the University Police Department, Metallica band members and other supporters for their efforts to help locate the couple’s missing daughter, who disappeared from a concert at John Paul Jones arena Oct. 17.

“We appreciate your prayers and ask that you continue to share any information you can with law enforcement so that we can find our daughter,” Mr. and Mrs. Harrington stated in the press release.

The Harrington family also stated that followers of the case should refer to a new Web site, www.FindMorgan.com, or the Virginia State Police Department’s Web site to access the most up-to-date information about the case. Two days ago, police authorities released a detailed timeline of events that officials believe outlines the moments leading up to Harrington’s disappearance.

Harrington is 5-foot-6 and 120 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a black T-shirt that read “Pantera” in tan letters, a black mini skirt, black tights and black knee-high boots. Anyone with any relevant information is asked to call the police’s tip line at (434) 352-3467.

Harrington family in Charlottesville as police investigate human remains

    Tuesday, January 26, 2010; 4:00 PM

After a partially skeletized body was found on a farm in Albemarle County today, Dan and Gil Harrington are on their way to Charlottesville.

Police have announced a joint press conference will be held at 5 p.m. in Charlottesville.

Monica Caison, the liaison between the Harrington family and the CUE Center for Missing Persons in Willimgton, North Carolina, said that the Harrington family is en route to Charlottesville at this time in order to be present for a press conference to be held at 5 o'clock this afternoon.

The CUE Center for Missing Persons specializes in searching for missing people. Caison, however, said that her organization was not involved in the discovery of the body today at Anchorage Farm. Caison said that she did not want to release any information until after the press conference.

The Virginia State Police have confirmed that the body was found in Charlottesville on a farm in Albemarle County.

David Bass, the owner of the farm, said he found the body around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Bass said the body was in a very remote part of his farm. He was checking fences when he discovered the remains. He said he only ventures to that particular part of the farm about once each year and had not been there since August.

Police asked Bass not to disclose any information about the appearance of the body.

Bass said the remains were "nowhere near a highway."

The police have blocked off access to Anchorage Farm off of Route 29, about six miles from the University of Virginia.

Virginia State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller said in a press release that if the scene is connected to missing Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington, more information will be sent.

Harrington, a 20-year-old Tech student, disappeared on Oct. 17, 2009 during a Metallica concert at John Paul Jones arena on the UVa campus. She was last seen hitchhiking near the arena.

Forensic teams are currently evaluating the crime scene, the state police said.

The Albemarle County Commonwealth’s Attorney Denise Lunsford was also at the crime scene.

Medical Examiner Positively Identifies Remains as Morgan Harrington

ALBEMARLE COUNTY - The state medical examiner has confirmed the remains found on an Albemarle County Farm Tuesday are those of Morgan Harrington.

Virginia State Police say the confirmation was made using dental records provided by the family and say the investigation continues into the time and cause of death.

Meantime, Morgan Harrington's father talks to CBS 6 about the discovery of his daughter's remains and what the revelation means to his family.

Dan Harrington tells Catie Beck, "This may sound strange, but we have found some peace in all of this. It wasn't the outcome that we wanted but we know now where our daughter is and there is peace in that."

Harrington said he felt that God had answered his prayers in a way after last week telling his wife he couldn't take much more of the 'not knowing.'

He said, "Now we have to figure out how to honor Morgan in death, how to have her life mean something."

In a conversation Wednesday morning, Harrington says his mission may include campus safety or self-defense for women, but most importantly he wants his daughter to be remembered.

"That's been always our biggest challenge - making sure that people don't forget her."

Harrington says the Charlottesville community has taken this case seriously from the beginning and that he has stated from early on that there was a crime and that the criminal lives in the Charlottesville area.

He says, "I always said she would be found within five miles of the campus. This person knew the area. If Mr. Bass had found a fresh body, we would be feeling very differently today, like perhaps Morgan had been held and tortured. I think my daughter was dead before that concert was over."

The family has not made burial arrangements yet ,but they plan to.

VT student's slaying linked to '05 case

RICHMOND, Va. (AP/WAVY) - Forensic evidence has connected the slaying of a Virginia Tech student to a 2005 unsolved abduction and sexual assault in northern Virginia, according to state police.

State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said Thursday that the evidence recovered during the investigation into the death of 20-year-old Morgan Harrington is linked to that of the case in Fairfax. Police released a composite sketch of the suspect in the 2005 case based on the victim's description of her attacker, but warned that he may have changed his appearance.

Harrington's remains were found on an Albemarle County farm Jan. 26, more than three months after the 20-year-old disappeared from a rock concert at the University of Virginia.

Police released a wanted posted (attached) showing a composite sketch of the suspect. If you have any information about the man featured on the poster, please contact City of Fairfax Police Detective Mike Boone at (703) 385-7959. Anyone wishing to provide information in the Morgan Harrington case is encouraged to call the Jefferson Area Crime Stoppers at (434) 977-4000 or Virginia State Police at (434) 352-3467 or email State Police at bci-appomattox@vsp.virginia.gov . A reward of $150,041 is still available for anyone with information that leads to a resolution of the Harrington crime.

UPDATE: Morgan Harrington slaying linked to '05 assault

The attacker in an abduction police have tied to the death of Morgan D. Harrington assaulted his victim physically as well as sexually, police said this afternoon.

In that case, the attacker carried his victim to a park in a residential neighborhood to assault her, Fairfax police said.

The victim, a 26-year-old woman, was walking through a residential neighborhood on her way home from a grocery store when she was attacked, said Sgt. Pam Nevlud of the City of Fairfax Police Department.

“An unidentified man grabbed her from behind,” Nevlud said. “He picked her up and carried her to a park that’s just adjacent to [the street], and that’s where she was physically and sexually assaulted.”

Nevlud declined to comment on the nature of the physical assault.

The state police announced today that forensic evidence found in the Harrington case matches evidence from the 2005 assault.

Harrington went missing in October after leaving a Metallica concert at John Paul Jones Arena. The Virginia Tech student was last seen at about 9:30 that night, hitchhiking on the Copeley Road railroad bridge.

A farmer found her bones in a southern Albemarle County in late January, and state police have been investigating the case as a homicide.

Her parents said that her bones were “shattered.”
