Louisiana Executes Killer-Rapist After a Clemency Plea Is Rejected

ANGOLA, La. — A man who raped and killed a woman in a robbery that netted a stereo set and a jar of pennies was put to death early today. He was the second Louisiana inmate to be executed in two days.

Three other executions are scheduled in the next two weeks in Louisiana, which until Sunday had not executed anyone in two and a half years.

The condemned man, Alvin Moore Jr., made no statement before he was strapped into the electric chair. He was pronounced dead at 12:16 A.M.

Mr. Moore's attorney, Wellborn Jack Jr., quoted him shortly before the execution as saying, ''They can kill my body, but not my soul.''

Mr. Moore, 27 years old, entered the death chamber, bound with leg irons and handcuffs, at 12:03 A.M. and briefly looked toward the row of witnesses separated from the electric chair by a window. He appeared calm but dazed as five guards strapped him into the chair and attached electrodes to his left leg and the top of his shaved head.

He was the ninth inmate executed in the United States this year and Louisiana's ninth since it resumed executions in 1983.

Mr. Moore was condemned to die at the Louisiana State Penitentiary for killing Jo Ann Wilson, 23, of Bossier City, on July 10, 1980. He maintained that he had never stabbed the woman and that she had willingly had sexual intercourse with him.

A last-minute plea for clemency was rejected by Gov. Edwin W. Edwards after a request to halt the execution was rejected late Monday by the State Supreme Court in a 4-to-3 vote.

Earlier in the day, the United States Supreme Court voted 7 to 2 to deny Mr. Moore's application for a stay.

The appeals contended that the death penalty was applied in a prejudicial manner against blacks, an argument rejected in April by the High Court in a landmark decision. Mr. Moore was black and his victim was white.

Early Sunday, Benjamin Berry was put to death for killing a bank guard in 1978.

Jimmy Glass faces an execution Friday for killing a couple in 1982. Jimmy Wingo is scheduled to die four days later for the same crime. Leslie Lowenfield, convicted of killing his former girlfriend and four other people, is scheduled to die on June 17.
