TEXAS AND MISSISSIPPI EXECUTIONS ARE CARRIED OUT AFTER PLEAS FAIL

Two men, both convicted of committing murders in robberies, were executed early today, one in the Mississippi gas chamber, the other by lethal injection in Texas.

The executions were the 82nd and 83rd in the nation since the Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976.

In the Mississippi case, Connie Ray Evans, 27 years old, was pronounced dead at 12:22 A.M., 17 minutes after officials at the State Prison at Parchman began the release of gas into the chamber, said the prison warden, Donald Cabana.

In Texas, a poisonous solution was injected into John R. Thompson, a 32-year-old former laborer, and he died at 12:20 A.M. at Walls Unit of the Department of Corrections in Huntsville, said Attorney General Jim Mattox.

The executions were carried out after the United States Supreme Court refused late yesterday to block the death sentences.

Earlier in the day the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles cast a tie vote that prevented a recommendation for a reprieve for Mr. Thompson, who has been on death row for 10 years. He was convicted in the shooting death of Mary Kneupper, 70 years old, of San Antonio in a 1977 robbery.

Mr. Thompson, who has said the shooting was accidental, was the 25th inmate executed in Texas since the state reinstated the death penalty in 1982. Texas has executed more inmates than any other state.

Mr. Evans, 27 years old, was sentenced to die for the 1981 shooting death of Arun Pahwa, a 28-year-old convenience store clerk in Jackson, Miss. Mr. Evans admitted shooting Mr. Pahwa in a robbery. Execution in Virginia

On Monday, another condemned inmate, Richard Lee Whitley, was executed in Virginia for murdering an elderly neighbor.

In Mr. Thompson's case, the Texas parole board voted 3 to 2 on Monday to recommend that Governor William P. Clements Jr. grant a reprieve. But Wendell Odom, a board member, was absent, and yesterday he made the vote a tie, meaning that the board would not recommend a delay.

Etta Ruth, Mr. Thompson's mother, testified Monday before the parole board that her son had a severe drug problem 10 years ago but that he had grown spiritually and in other ways since then.

In Mr. Evans's case, his mother, Mary Louise Mack, and brother, Joe Lee Lewis, attended a clemency hearing yesterday in Governor Bill Allain's office that was closed to the public. They refused to talk with reporters afterward. Appeal Rejected in a Key Case

ATLANTA, July 7 (AP) - The Georgia Supreme Court rejected an appeal today from Warren McCleskey, the convicted murderer who lost a case before the United States Supreme Court earlier this year that attacked the death penalty as being discriminatory to blacks.

State officials scheduled his execution for 7 P.M. July 14.

The Supreme Court ruling upheld Georgia's capital punishment law despite evidence of racial bias in its application. Mr. McCleskey, a black, was convicted of the 1978 murder of a white Atlanta police officer.
