    Iran hangs rapist:

TEHRAN — Iran has hanged in prison a man convicted of raping several women in the central city of Isfahan, ISNA news agency reported on Saturday.

The man, only identified as Hossein M., was found guilty of raping several women after offering them a ride and then threatening to kill them, the report said, quoting Isfahan's judiciary.

It did not say when the hanging took place.

The latest hanging brings the number of executions in Iran to at least 145 so far this year, according to an AFP count based on media reports. At least 270 people were executed in 2009.

Iran is one of the leading countries that carry out the death penalty each year, along with China, Saudi Arabia and the United States.

The Islamic republic says the death penalty is essential to maintain public security and is applied only after exhaustive judicial proceedings.

Murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and adultery are all punishable by death in Iran.

Iran hangs woman for murdering love rival

TEHRAN — Iran on Wednesday hanged a woman convicted of murdering a love rival, her lawyer told the official IRNA news agency.

Shahla Jahed was hanged at 5:00 am (01:30 GMT) after the verdict was confirmed by the supreme court and the judiciary chief, lawyer Abdolsamad Khoramshahi said.

The London-based rights group Amnesty International on Tuesday called on Iran to halt Jahed's execution, saying "there are good reasons to suggest that she may have been wrongly convicted."

Jahed, who had a so-called "temporary" marriage with Nasser Mohammad Khani, a former striker for the Iranian national team, was convicted of stabbing to death his "permanent" wife eight years ago.

In the Shiite faith that is the majority religion in Iran, men and women can marry for an agreed period of time. Afterwards, the marriage is null and void, although it can be renewed.

Men can have up to four permanent wives, and any number of temporary wives. Women can only be married to one man at a time.

Amnesty said that in early 2008 the judiciary overturned the verdict and ordered a fresh investigation, citing "procedural flaws." However, Jahed was again sentenced to death in February 2009.

Khani was a prominent Iranian footballer in the 1980s and late became a coach for Tehran's Persepolis football club.

The execution is the 146th so far this year, according to an AFP count based on media reports. At least 270 people were executed in 2009.

The Islamic republic says the death penalty is essential to maintain law and order and is applied only after exhaustive judicial proceedings.

Murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and adultery are all punishable by death in Iran.

20 More Executions in Mashad Amidst Continued Silence from the Judiciary

Following the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran's reports of secret group executions without due process inside Mashad's Vakilabad prison, local sources told the Campaign that 9 more people were executed on 30 November. The source also reported of 11 executions of individuals for drug-related crimes on 9 November. Counting the other 10 prisoners who were executed on 26 October, in less than 1 months 30 executions have been carried out inside Vakilabad prison. According to reports from informed sources, 23 other prisoners were hung inside the prison in early October. These executions are not included in official statistics released by the Judiciary to government media.

The inmates were hung inside Vakilabad's Security Ward. According to sources, the executions that took place on 9 and 30 November did not follow laws of the Islamic Republic of Iran and were carried out without the knowledge and presence of the lawyers and families of those executed. "As in previous instances, those executed did not know about the fact that the Supreme Court had upheld their death sentences and executions until just a few hours before the death sentences were carried out. The written confirmation of the Supreme Court’s ruling was not served to the convicts, nor their lawyers or families; the documents were only sent to Mashad Prosecutor's Office for implementation." Previously, the said sources told the Campaign that several of these cases have major ambiguities with respect to the judicial review process.

Multiple Reports of Secret Group Executions in Vakilabad Prison

More Secret Executions in Mashad: 23 Executed in October

"Some of those executed were professional smugglers, and some of them were petty smugglers. But authorities refuse to announce the executions. The way the convicts are executed and the lack of publicity about what is happening inside Vakilabad prison suggests that judicial authorities do not wish these execution statistics to be added to the annual statistics of the country," said the source. Currently, Iran and China are at the top of the world list for the number of annual executions.

In October, Prosecutor General Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejehi implicitly spoke about the ineffectiveness of executions of some smugglers. "Some of the people who are found possessing drugs are not the main smugglers and don’t benefit financially from this. The real smuggler hires these individuals and deceives them. While he is sitting in a safe place, another individual is tried and maybe even executed in his place," he said. (Fars News Agency)

"Transporting more than 30 grams of heroin will lead to the death penalty. According to the new law, transporting and distributing psychedelic substances and industrial uppers are recognized at the same level as heroin," said the Deputy Head of the government's Anti-Drug Organization.

The said source claimed that in 2009, nearly 250 similar executions took place in this prison, very few of which were reported by the media.

The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran has called on Iranian judicial authorities to provide explanations about the alarming number of executions of drug-related criminals, and to announce the real number of executions carried out in Vakilabad prison. So far, judicial authorities have not reacted to this request.

Mass hanging of 11 Sunni rebels in Iran

Iran on Monday hanged 11 members of the Sunni militant group Jundallah which claimed last week's devastating suicide bombing of a Shiite mourning procession, a judiciary official said.

"This morning 11 members of those belonging to (Jundallah), who in recent months were involved in terrorist attacks in the province ... have been hanged in Zahedan jail," Sistan-Baluchestan provincial justice department head Ebrahim Hamidi told state news agency IRNA.

Shadowy Sunni militant group Jundallah (Army of God) has claimed several deadly attacks in Sistan-Baluchestan, of which Zahedan is the capital and which borders Afghanistan and Pakistan, including a December 15 suicide bombing in the city of Chabahar that killed 39 people and wounded dozens.

Hamidi said those hanged were identified and arrested by Iranian security and intelligence forces.

"These corrupt and Mohareb (waging war against God) elements ... went through all the legal and religious procedures of receiving a fair and public trial," he said.

Hamidi said they were charged with "corruption on earth, fighting against God and the Prophet and confronting the sacred regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran." Under Iranian penal code these crimes are punishable by death.

"Thus they were convicted and sentenced to hanging. The sentence was carried out after receiving confirmation from the judiciary," he added.

Jundallah, whose leader Abdolmalek Rigi was hanged in June, says it is fighting for the rights of the ethnic Sunni Baluchis who make up a significant population in Sistan-Baluchestan.

The group has been waging a deadly insurgency in southeastern Iran for almost a decade.

Jundallah insists it is fighting for the rights of the Sunni ethnic Baluchi population of southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province, in the face of Shiite rule from Tehran.

Iranian officials charged that the group is receiving support from the intelligence services of the United States and Britain.

Those hanged included some who had carried out attacks against Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards members, a regular target of Jundallah, IRNA reported.

Three of them were convicted of killing nearly 30 Guards in separate attacks, while another was hanged for providing logistical support during a bombing of a mosque in Zahedan.

Two Shiite mosques in Zahedan have been the targets of bomb attacks in the past two years killing a total of more than 50 people.

Jundallah also claimed the December 15 suicide attack at a Shiite religious procession in Chabahar that was condemned internationally.

The bomber struck in a central square as worshippers took part in the procession marking the eve of the last day of Ashura, the most revered Shiite mourning ritual.

Jundallah said the Chabahar bombing was to avenge the hanging of its leader Rigi.

Iran has cracked down hard on the group and last month the United States officially designated Jundallah a foreign terrorist organisation. That drew a cautious welcome from Iran, which accuses Washington of supporting the group.

Iranian officials also charge the group has links with Al-Qaeda and that it has received money and training from arch-foe the United States in collaboration with Britain to destabilise the Islamic republic.

The hangings of the 11 Sunni rebels bring the number of executions in Iran to at least 162 so far this year, according to an AFP count based on media reports. At least 270 people were executed in 2009.

Iran says the death penalty is essential to maintain law and order and is applied only after exhaustive judicial proceedings. Murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and adultery are other crimes punishable by death.

IRAN has hanged a woman serial killer, convicted of murdering five middle-aged women, in a prison in the central city of Qazvin, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The report identified the woman sent to the gallows as Mahin Qadiri, whom it said went on a killing spree between February 2008 and May 2009.

It said, without giving further details, that Qadiri murdered her victims by rendering them unconscious and then strangling them.

The hanging brings the number of executions in Iran to at least 151 so far this year, according to an AFP count based on media reports. At least 270 people were executed in 2009.

Along with China, Saudi Arabia and the United States, Iran has one of the highest numbers of executions each year.

Iran hangs spy for relaying sensitive military secrets to Mossad

An Iranian convicted of spying for Israel has been hanged in his homeland.

Ali Akbar Siadat was found guilty of relaying sensitive data to Mossad, having worked for the Israeli intelligence agency since 2004. He was arrested four years later when he tried to leave Iran with his wife.

Iran and Israel have been enemies since the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran and Tehran periodically announces the arrest of people suspected of spying for Israel, which Iran refuses to recognise.

Ali Akbar Siadat, who spied for Israel's Mossad, was hanged inside the Evin prison (in Tehran) this morning,' the official IRNA news agency said, quoting the judiciary.

'He was convicted of corruption on Earth, confronting the Islamic Republic and strengthening the Zionist regime (Israel).

'Siadat confessed receiving $60,000 for transferring classified information to Mossad on Iran's military activities,' IRNA said. The statement said he had been given 'special equipment including a laptop' to contact Mossad.

IRNA said Siadat met Israeli agents in Turkey, Thailand and the Netherlands among other countries. He gave them information on Iran's military drills, military bases, military aircraft as well as missile systems operated by the Revolutionary Guards, the news agency said.

A convicted Iranian, Ali Ashtari, was hanged in Iran in 2008 for working with Mossad. Israel denied any links with the case.

Iran often accuses Israel and the United States of trying to destabilise the Islamic Republic.

Israel, believed to be the only country in the Middle East with nuclear weapons, sides with the United States and its allies in accusing Iran of seeking to build atomic weapons of its own.

Iran denies this, saying it wants to use nuclear power to generate electricity.

Israel has not ruled out military strikes on Iran if diplomatic efforts fail to resolve the stand off over Tehran's nuclear programme.

Iran has vowed to retaliate to any strikes with missile salvoes on Israel and U.S. targets in the Gulf.

IRNA also said Ali Saremi, a member of the exiled opposition group the Mujahideen Khalq Organisation, was hanged for various offences, including 'moharebe' or waging war against God.

Under Iran's penal code, imposed since its 1979 Islamic revolution, espionage and waging war against God can carry the death penalty.
