Iranian exile group confirms member’s execution

An Iranian exile group confirmed on Tuesday the execution of one of its members in Iran, saying it demonstrated Tehran's frustration at not being able to defeat the opposition movement.

Iran's official IRNA news agency said Ali Saremi, a member of the exiled opposition group the People's Mujahideen Organisation of Iran (PMOI), was hanged for various offences, including "moharebe" or waging war against God.

Under Iran's penal code, imposed since its 1979 Islamic Revolution, espionage and waging war against God can carry the death penalty.

The leader of the Paris-based National Council of Resistance of Iran, Maryam Rajavi, said in a statement that Saremi's execution "only reflects the regime's inability and frustration in face of the resolute Iranian youths and members of PMOI who are determined to overthrow clerical rule and establish freedom and the rule of the people in Iran."

The statement said Saremi was subject to "the most brutal torture and pressures" until his final days and that his daughter was arrested outside Tehran's Evin prison following his execution.
