7th Circuit Denies COA to Odell Corley FED DR in 2002 in Robbery/Murder

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) — A Michigan City man’s death sentence has been upheld by U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Wednesday.

On Monday, the Court issued its opinion affirming the conviction and death penalty sentence of Odell Corley for committing the failed armed robbery of the First State Bank of Porter, Pines branch, on Aug. 27, 2002.

In the incident, Corley fired the shots that resulted in two deaths and paralyzed a bank guard.

A federal jury in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana in Hammond returned its guilty verdict Oct. 6, 2004.

U.S. District Court Judge Rudy Lozano imposed the death sentence Dec. 15, 2004, and Corley, also known as Naish Ra'id, appealed to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.

The verdict/sentence of death achieved in this prosecution was the first such verdict in the history of the Northern District of Indiana.

During the initial trial, prosecutors presented video footage from the robbery that showed Corley firing the fatal shots and used as evidence a palm print recovered from the shooting scene that matched Corley’s palm.

Bank teller Kay Peckat, 52, died in the shooting, while teller Chandler Simpson, 59, died about three months later from his wounds.

Security guard Keith Hill was left a quadriplegic from his wounds in the failed robbery, which yielded no money because the vault was locked at the bank, about 20 miles east of Gary.

Andre L. McGregor and Danyass Gay, both of Michigan City, and Edward Johnson and Jeana Ramsey, both of Rochester, pleaded guilty in 2003 to charges that they were involved in the robbery attempt.

US officials: Man on federal death row found unresponsive, pronounced dead

    By GEORGE HALE

U.S. officials say a 59-year-old man on federal death row in Terre Haute has died.

Prison officials said over the weekend that they found Nasih Khalil Ra’id unresponsive early Friday at the Federal Correctional Complex.

The man, who went by Ra'id rather than his legal name, Odell Corley, was sentenced to death in 2004 on charges related to a deadly bank robbery.

In an emailed statement, a U.S. prisons official wrote that employees started life-saving measures while they waited for emergency responders to arrive.

The official added that E-M-S staff pronounced the man dead.

“No employees or other incarcerated individuals were injured and at no time was the public in danger,” according to the statement.

A spokesperson for the prison bureau declined to explain what caused Ra'id to become unresponsive but said the FBI was notified of the death.

"At this time, the FBI has no further comment on this matter," Steven Secor, an FBI official, wrote in an email Monday.

Court records show Ra’id had been in Terre Haute since 2005.

A federal jury in Indiana sentenced him to death after finding him guilty of multiple charges connected to a deadly bank robbery in Porter, Indiana, in 2002.

The charges included murder and federal weapons offenses.
