CINCINNATI (AP) -- Three years ago, Daryl Lawrence stormed a bank on East Broad Street and opened fire, taking the life of a Columbus police officer, husband and new father.

Lawrence was found guilty and sentenced to death -- only to have another judge later remove him from death row, NBC 4 reported.

But a show of solidarity was made on Wednesday as a high-profile caravan rolled into Cincinnati, calling for justice for the men and woman who serve and protect.

Columbus police Officer Bryan Hurst was working security at the bank when Lawrence stormed the bank. Hurst's death was a devastating blow to his family and fellow officers.

The judge cited inconsistencies in the jury's sentencing recommendations as reason for setting the death penalty aside.

The decision didn't make sense to Hurst's fellow police officers or family -- and more than a dozen officers escorted Hurst's family members to the Cincinnati Federal Court where the judgment to set aside the death penalty is being appealed to a three-judge panel.

The ruling is not expected for at least three months.

CINCINNATI — A federal appeals court reinstated the death penalty on Wednesday for a man convicted in the shooting death of a Columbus police officer.

Sentencing for Daryl Lawrence moved to the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals after a federal jury returned two sentences. Jurors gave Lawrence life in prison for shooting Officer Bryan Hurst during a bank robbery, but also handed down a death sentence for killing him with malice.

Federal judge Gregory Frost set aside the death sentence, calling it arbitrary and irrational. He also ordered a new jury to determine Lawrence's fate, 10TV News reported.

On Wednesday, the appeals court ruled that Lawrence should be sentenced to death.

Hurst, 33, was working special duty at an east side Fifth-Third Bank on Jan. 6, 2005 when Lawrence walked inside the bank with a handgun, 10TV News reported.

The men exchanged gunfire and Hurst was fatally wounded.

Lawrence, who was also wounded, was later arrested and charged with Hurst's slaying.

6 Years Later, Columbus Officer's Killer Tries To Get Off Death Row

It has been more than 6 years since CPD officer Bryan Hurst was killed while working special duty at a bank.

It was on that day that Darryl Lawrence walked into a bank on East Broad Street, robbed it, and eventually shot and killed the 33-year-old Hurst.

He was sentenced to death for the killing, and Wednesday the Federal Court of Appeals heard arguments regarding that ruling.

It is the second such hearing in the last few years, and once again, Hurst's family and members of the Columbus Division of Police made the trip to show how they feel.

Hurst's family talked with NBC4 before they left for southern Ohio.

"The only way we get closure is when we pass on and we are with Bryan," Ted Kaczorowski, Bryan's father, said.

Bryan's mother recounts a conversation she had with Bryan before his death.

"He said, 'Killing a police officer is a death sentence. He felt that would be the punishment for someone killing him doing his job,' " Carolyn Kaczorowski said.

Both feel Lawrence should be put to death, so does FOP President Jim Gilbert, a classmate of Hurst.

"This is the second appeal. We went down for that one and will continue to go down to ensure his memory is not forgotten and justice is done for him and his family," Gilbert said.

Hurst's widow also thinks death is the right decision.

"I hope he's had a lot of time to reflect on what he did -- that he has had long conversations with himself about what he has inflicted on everyone else. I think it's proper," Marissa Gibson said.

UNITED STATES of AMERICA v DARYL LAWRENCE

A death row inmate who killed a Columbus police officer during a bank robbery in 2005 has lost an appeal of his conviction and death sentence.

A three-judge panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati on Tuesday turned down 24 different claims from 38-year-old Daryl Lawrence.

In a 75-page ruling, the judges disagreed with all of Lawrence's arguments, finding that he received a fair trial.

Lawrence was convicted of eight charges from four Ohio bank robberies, including murder.

Prosecutors say Lawrence shot 33-year-old Officer Bryan Hurst above his bulletproof vest at a bank. Hurst was working off duty as a bank guard to earn extra money to support his wife and baby daughter.

Officers remember last Columbus officer killed in line of duty, 11 years ago

COLUMBUS — Central Ohio officers remembered the last city officer killed in the line of duty during their Blessing the Badge ceremony Wednesday. It was 11 years to the day that Bryan Hurst was killed.

"11 years ago today, we lost a hero," Deputy Chief Jim Gilbert with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office said about his fallen classmate from the police academy. "He was struck just above the vest."

On January 6th, 2005, Officer Bryan Hurst was working special duty at a 5/3 Bank on East Broad Street - which no longer exists. During banking hours, repeat bank robber Daryl Lawrence burst in, announced his heist and started opening fire.

A bullet hit Officer Hurst in the chest but he was able to shoot back. He shot Lawrence in return, who then ran out of the bank.

"He kept his weapon on that front door, collapsed, taking his last breath with his gun still raised at that door," said Deputy Chief Gilbert. " (He was ) ready to protect in case that suspect came back in."

Deputy Chief Gilbert posted on Hurst's online memorial page this week along with a former bank employee who wrote, "I think about you everyday and I remember your sacrifice."

Officer Hurst's mother-in-law took the opportunity to vent about the scrutiny of police today. She wrote, "..bad press lately with police bashing. I want to slap the idiots making such comments especially after your sacrifice."

The city is making a push for all officers to be equipped with body cameras.

As for Lawrence, police caught him three days after the robbery. He's now on death row and eligible for one more appeal.

"There is a point in the history of a society when it becomes so pathologically soft and tender that among other things it sides even with those who harm it, criminals, and does this quite seriously and honestly. Punishing somehow seems unfair to it, and it is certain that imagining ‘punishment’ and ‘being supposed to punish’ hurts it, arouses fear in it." Friedrich Nietzsche
