Summary of Offense:
Jones, a former mental patient, was sentenced to die after a weeklong series of claw hammer attacks in January 1985 inside men’s restrooms that left three men dead and a fourth badly injured. Jones was sentenced to die in the slayings of Dr. Michael Corbett, 35, who was killed in a restroom at University Medical Center in Sacramento, and the bludgeoning death of Harry Dong, a 47-year-old man who stopped to use a restroom at Sutter's Fort.
He also killed physics lecturer Fred Gordon Morris, 34, in a men's room on the University of California, Davis, campus and was sentenced to life in prison after earlier receiving the death sentence in the other slayings. Jones claimed that a metal drill bit implanted in his ear by doctors created voices that told him to commit the killings, and that when he went into the restroom at the medical center looking for a victim he “hoped it was a doctor.”
Jones was sentenced to death in Sacramento County on February 22, 1989.
