History of executions in Oregon
Capital punishment has been legal in Oregon for most of the state’s history. The first execution took place in 1851 under the area’s territorial government.
The death penalty was made formally legal in Oregon in 1864. Since then, capital punishment has been voted out twice, and struck down once by the state’s Supreme Court, each time being reinstated again as law.
In 1997, Harry Charles Moore became the 60th person executed in the state.
Aggravated murder is the only crime eligible for the death penalty in Oregon.
With the sentencing of Joshua and Bruce Turnidge, there are now 36 men on death row in Oregon. Death Row is located in Special Management Housing at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem.
