Scottsdale police: Father who killed sons was divorcing

A Scottsdale Realtor who police say shot and killed his two sons before turning the gun on himself was embroiled in a divorce proceeding with his estranged wife, police said.

Andre M. Leteve, 39, called 911 about 8 a.m. Wednesday and told authorities that he just shot his son, police said.

Officers forced their way into the home near Scottsdale and Indian Bend roads to find Leteve's sons shot dead, Scottsdale police spokesman Officer Dave Pubins said.

Court records in the divorce case identify the children as Alec M. Leteve, 5, and Asher S. Leteve, 1. The records indicate Leteve was worried the boys' mother was going to move from Arizona to Florida with the boys.

"It's devastating. It's a tragedy, anybody with children would feel the same way," Pubins said.

Leteve "was distraught over a pending divorce from his estranged wife," Pubins confirmed.

Leteve attempted suicide by shooting himself in the head, Pubins said. He was transported to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center. He is expected to survive.

Leteve's estranged wife, Laurie Beth Leteve, 40, was not at the home at the time of the shootings, Pubins said. The woman lives elsewhere in Scottsdale, according to court records in the divorce proceedings.

The house where the shooting occurred, in the 7600 block of East Cactus Wren Road, is in an upscale gated community.

"A situation like this doesn't know any boundaries," Pubins said.

Andre Leteve owns the home, according to Maricopa County Assessor's records. It was purchased in 2007 for almost $1.2 million, records show. Leteve also listed as a member of the Scottsdale Area Association of Realtors, according to the group's Web site.

Berniece Rosoff, who lives across the street from Leteve, described him as a devoted father. The families would wave to each other coming and going.

"We're a lot older than they are," she said. "It's a real tragedy for everyone, him and certainly the wife."

According to Maricopa County Superior Court documents, Laurie Beth Leteve filed for divorce on Oct. 20. Laurie Beth Leteve was seeking shared custody of the two boys. Andre Leteve was served with divorce papers on Nov. 9.

Later that month, Andre Leteve filed an emergency petition for child custody. He wrote that his wife was trying to relocate to Florida.

On Wednesday, yellow roses in a glass vase with a card, were left at the Scottsdale house listed as Leteve's address in court documents. A blue and red tricycle and a blue plastic ball sat outside under a tree in the yard.

The shooting was the latest of several recent family shootings involving children in the Valley.

A similar case happened last year in Scottsdale. In August, businessman Russell Gilman gunned down his two sons and wife before taking his own life. In his suicide note, Gilman wrote the family was out of money and he was certain they couldn't survive without him.

In September, Mesa resident, Philip Mullaly, returned home after a late night shift to find his wife Susan and sons Ryan, 15 and Nick, 12, shot dead by Susan in a murder-suicide. Mesa police said at the time the couple had experienced marital problems.

Scottsdale father indicted on murder in sons' killings

A Scottsdale man has been indicted on two-counts of first-degree murder in the killing of his two young sons last month.

Andre Leteve, 39, was released from the hospital Monday and booked into Maricopa County Jail, according to court documents.

Leteve was being treated for a gunshot wound to the face.

Scottsdale police say that, after using a revolver to fatally shoot his two toddlers in the head inside his home on March 31, Leteve turned the gun on himself. He then called police to report the shooting.

He is to remain in jail without bond, records show. A Maricopa County Superior Court grand jury indicted Leteve last week.

Leteve is scheduled to be in court on Monday.

Leteve, a Scottsdale Realtor, called 911 about 8 the morning of the shootings. According to a tape of the 911 call, released by Scottsdale police, Leteve tells the dispatcher, "I just shot and killed my sons."

Police arrived at Leteve's home in the 7600 block of East Cactus Wren Road and forced their way into the house to find both boys shot dead.

The dispatcher asked Leteve where he shot himself and he replies, "My face." A booking photo of Leteve shows him with a bandage around his neck and chin area.

According to court records, Leteve was going through a divorce and was worried about his wife, Laurie Beth Leteve, 40, moving to Florida with their sons, Alec, 5, and Asher, 1.

Laurie Beth Leteve had moved out of the residence and lived elsewhere in Scottsdale. She was not at the home at the time of the shooting, police said.

Father could face the death penalty in murder case

A Scottsdale man accused of shooting and killing his own sons will head to court Tuesday.

Andre Leteve pleaded not guilty in 2010 for killing his sons, who were only 1 and 5 years old.

Police say Leteve and his wife were going through a bitter divorce at the time.

Authorities say after shooting his sons, Leteve shot himself and called 911.

This is a capital murder case -- meaning if he's convicted, he could face the death penalty.

Scottsdale man to stand trial in killing of 2 sons

On March 31, 2010, Andre Leteve called Scottsdale’s 911 operators.

“I’m in shock,” Leteve told them. “I shot and killed my sons and shot myself.”

When police burst into the home on the gated 7600 block of East Cactus Wren Road, they found Alec, 5, and Asher, 1, fatally shot in the head.

Leteve was wounded but still alive.

This week, jury selection will begin in his trial for the killings. Opening statements are not expected until next month.

Prosecutors are expected to argue Leteve deliberately plotted the deaths as revenge against his wife, Laurie.

“The state claims one of the motives for killing the sons was revenge because Laurie, (his) wife and the children’s mother, left him after finding out that (he) had sex with multiple prostitutes,” according to an Aug. 24 Superior Court document that summarizes the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office’s case against Leteve.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. Leteve has been held without bond since shortly after the killings.

Leteve, prosecutors say, used a revolver to fatally shoot his sons in the head, then turned the gun on himself in a failed suicide attempt that has required numerous facial surgeries.

“Laurie was dating someone else at the time of the shootings. The other motive stems from the defendant’s poor finances at the time of the shooting,” the document says.

Defense lawyers will argue Leteve acted without premeditation, according to the court documents. The case is being tried before Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Karen O’Connor.

Asked to comment on the case, defense attorneys Maria Schaffer and Greg Parzych declined to elaborate.

“We don’t feel comfortable talking about our theories of the case on the brink of jury selection, other than to say that for the past two years, we have been working diligently and thoroughly to ensure that Mr. Leteve gets the best possible trial he can,” Parzych said.

Potential jurors will be asked to be available starting Oct. 9, the expected opening-statement date, until Dec. 20, Parzych said.

Capital cases can have up to three phases, a fact-finding phase, which is the trial, an aggravation hearing and a sentencing phase, Parzych said.

More than 100 witnesses are expected to testify in a trial likely to focus on sexual conduct, financial mishaps and marital troubles.

The court ruled the state may attempt to prove that Leteve had poor finances, called police twice in 2009 to remove Laurie from the home and had affairs.

Jury sees crime scene photos in Scottsdale dad's trial

It was another emotional day in court as jurors were shown pictures of a terrible crime scene. Andre Leteve is on trial, accused of shooting and killing his two young sons. He then tried to kill himself.

Andre Leteve has admitted to killing his sons two and a half years ago. Prosecutors say for days he planned the killings to victimize his soon to be ex-wife. But he says he just snapped.

When the SWAT team walked into the house, they found a scene so horrible they were eventually sent home, and another team was called in to relieve them.

"I saw on the couch I saw a small little foot," testified Sgt. Tom Myers, Scottsdale Police Dept.

That small little foot belonged to 5-year-old Alec Leteve. The jury was then shown pictures of a pillow with a bullet hole. Investigators believe Andre Leteve covered his son's head with a pillow before shooting him in the head. Upstairs was another heartbreaking discovery.

"Detective Weaver yelled out to me 'Tom, I've got the smell of gunpowder down here,'" said Myers.

The boys' family members cried as the jury was shown pictures of 1-year-old Asher found dead in his crib. Sgt. Tom Myers said Asher was covered with blankets before he was shot in the neck near his head.

"I could see a blanket over the child. I could see a bullet hole which to me looked very similar to the one I had seen on the pillow," testified Myers.

Then the jury was shown pictures of little Asher. They're too graphic for us to show. Some jurors were visibly shaken.

As for Leteve, he didn't show much emotion. He admitted to killing his sons during a bitter divorce with his ex-wife.

The state says the killings were premeditated. They say Leteve first typed up a suicide note on his computer six days before he killed them -- then modified and printed the note three days before it happened.

The trial will continue Wednesday morning. If the jury finds the murders premeditated, he could be sentenced to death.

Scottsdale man guilty of first-degree murder in sons' shooting deaths

A Scottsdale father has been found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder in the death of his two sons.

Police said Andre Michael Leteve called 911 on March 31, 2010, and said he had shot his child. When they arrived at his home, officers found his sons, 5-year-old Alec and 1-year-old Asher, dead.

After shooting his sons, police said Leteve shot himself in the head in an unsuccessful suicide attempt.

Both prosecutors and Leteve's defense team acknowledged that Leteve fired a .38-caliber revolver into the back of the boys' heads. But the two sides differed over the question of whether the horrific act was premeditated and therefore deserving the death penalty.

Prosecutors contend the killings were a calculated, premeditated and revengeful act carried out by Leteve as a way of punishing his estranged wife, Laurie Leteve, who was divorcing her husband.

Leteve's defense lawyers, however, countered by telling jurors that the killings were not premeditated, but instead a spontaneous eruption of violence from a man depressed and despondent over the breakup of his marriage and a mountain of personal financial problems.

I really really hate child killers, especially if they're your own. How can anyone comprehend killing their own children? They should love and protect them--not kill them!!

He should be executed just for being such a dumbass. If you can't figure out how to kill yourself with a loaded handgun you seriously suck at life.
