Date set in retrial for 2009 Kingman slaying

    By Jim Seckler
    The Mohave Valley Daily News

KINGMAN — A trial date has been set for a Kingman man charged with the stabbing death of a Kingman teenager.

Darrell Bryant Ketchner, 60, is charged with first-degree murder and burglary. Prosecutors recently dropped the death penalty against Ketchner.

In a hearing held in Bullhead City, Superior Court Judge Rick Williams set Ketchner’s estimated two-week long trial to start May 6, 2019, at the Superior Court in Kingman.

The Arizona Supreme Court overturned Ketchner’s murder conviction and death sentence in December 2014 and sent those charges back to Mohave County to be retried. The high court upheld his conviction and prison sentence for attempted murder, three counts of aggravated assault and a weapons charge.

On the night of July 4, 2009, Jennifer Allison was sitting at her kitchen table with her 18-year-old daughter, Ariel Allison, at their Kingman home. Ketchner arrived unannounced at the Allisons’ home and chased Jennifer Allison outside and shot her in the head in the driveway.

Ketchner went back inside and allegedly stabbed Ariel Allison eight times in her mother’s bedroom, where she later died. Several other children escaped out a window. Jennifer Allison survived her wounds.

County's cost in Rector, Ketchner defenses up to $2.5 million

    BY JIM SECKLER
    The Mohave Valley Daily News

KINGMAN — The cost to try two murder cases in Mohave County in the past 10 years is about $2.5 million.

Prosecutors in both Justin James Rector’s and Darrell Bryant Ketchner’s murder cases withdrew the death penalty in February. There are no other death penalty cases in the county.

Ketchner, 60, is charged with first-degree murder and burglary in the death of 18-year-old Ariel Allison at her Kingman home on the night of July 4, 2009. He previously was convicted and sentenced to death but an appeals court overturned both the sentence and the conviction. Prosecutors decided to drop the death penalty, citing the cost of capital penalty cases as a factor in that decision, but are seeking to retry Ketchner on the murder charge.

The updated total cost for Ketchner’s re-trial defense from the 2014-15 fiscal year is $779,530. The total cost includes $483,466 for Ketchner’s defense attorneys and more than $296,064 for investigative services, Schritter said.

The total cost for Ketchner’s first trial defense from the 2009-10 to the 2013-14 fiscal years was $779,639. The total cost includes $343,110 for Ketchner’s defense attorneys and more than $436,528 for investigative services.

The total costs of Ketchner’s appeals from 2013-14 to 2014-15 fiscal years was $37,421.

Ketchner’s next hearing before Superior Court Judge Rick Lambert has been set for Jan. 7.

Judge appoints new lawyer in accused killer’s retrial

    By Jim Seckler
    The Mohave Valley Daily News

KINGMAN — A murder trial for a Kingman man was vacated Friday after the appointment of a new attorney.

Darrell Bryant Ketchner, 61, is charged with first-degree murder and burglary for the 2009 death of 18-year-old Ariel Allison. Ketchner faces life in prison if convicted of the murder charge.

Superior Court Judge Rick Williams appointed Sandra Carr, of Kingman, as Ketchner’s new attorney after his former attorney, Michael Reeves of Phoenix, withdrew from the case due to a conflict.

Because of the massive file on the case that Carr recently received, Williams vacated Ketchner’s trial that had been set for February and set a status hearing for Feb. 12.

On the night of July 4, 2009, Ketchner showed up unannounced at Jennifer Allison’s Kingman home while she and her daughter, Ariel Allison, sat at their kitchen table. Ketchner chased Jennifer Allison outside and shot her in the head in the driveway.

Ketchner went back inside and allegedly killed Ariel Allison by stabbing her eight times after she attempted to hide in her mother’s bedroom. Several other children escaped out a window.

    Jennifer Allison survived her wounds.

The Arizona Supreme Court overturned Ketchner’s murder conviction and death sentence in December 2014 and sent the murder and burglary charges back to Mohave County to be retried. Prosecutors no longer are seeking the death penalty.

The Supreme Court upheld his conviction and prison sentence for attempted murder, three counts of aggravated assault and a weapons charge. Ketchner is serving 21 years in prison for the attempted murder charge and 33 years in prison for the three aggravated assault charges.
