    Robert LeRoy McCoy - Louisiana

A state appeals court has halted Monday's trial of Robert McCoy, the man accused of killing three members of his estranged wife's family in Bossier City.

The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeal in Shreveport said McCoy's attorney does not have his defense ready and needs more time to get information from expert witnesses.

McCoy, 37, is charged with killing the mother and step-father of his estranged wife, along with her teenage son.

Prosecutors say McCoy was looking for his wife when barged into the house and shot each victim. He was arrested while hitching a ride with a truck driver in Idaho.

    McCoy has pleaded not guilty.

His trial is now set to begin July 25 in Bossier District Court. The district attorney is seeking a death sentence.

McCoy's Lawyer Concedes Client Killed His Wife's Family

BENTON -- The lawyer for accused killer Robert McCoy conceded Wednesday that McCoy murdered three members of his estranged wife's family, but asked the jury for something less than a death-penalty verdict.

That admission came during opening statements in McCoy's first-degree murder trial in Bossier District Court.

District Attorney Schuyler Marvin addressed the jury first, telling them McCoy had been terrorizing his estranged wife, Yolanda. There was a 911 call from her family's home the night of the murders and police immediately knew they needed to find McCoy, Marvin said.

Officers arrived at the victims' home on Grace Lane in Bossier City to find everyone shot between the eyes, Marvin told the jury.

Then it was defense attorney Larry English's turn to address the jury. He told them his client committed the murders -- but that "Robert McCoy is crazy" and cannot make a rational decision. English asked the jury for a second-degree murder verdict, which would carry a mandatory life sentence without parole.

"In all of his soul he does not believe he committed these crimes," English said of McCoy. "He lives in a fantasy. He is a damaged human being that cannot function among us.

"The evidence will challenge your humanity. Hold on to your humanity," English told the jury.

McCoy is charged in the murders of Willie Ray Young, Christine Colston Young and her 17-year-old grandson, Gregory Colston.

More than a dozen people from the victims' family were in the courtroom during opening statements.

It seems to me as a cheap trick to avoid the needle. If this guy was insane at the time of the murder he can´t be punished, if he wasn´t he should get the maximum penalty. I don´t understand why his lawyer goes for a sentence instead (LWOP) instead of the insane-defense. If he goes for a sentence it shows me that he doesen´t believe that his client was insane at the time of his cirmes....

Jury finds McCoy guilty of 2008 triple murder

A Bossier Parish jury found Robert McCoy guilty Thursday afternoon of killing his estranged wife's parents and her son while on a rage to find her.

The same jury returns this morning to determine if McCoy should get the death penalty or serve the rest of his life in jail for the May 2008 deaths of Christine Colston Young, Willie Young and 17-year-old Greg Colston in their Bossier City home.

The case went to the jury Thursday after McCoy took the stand in his own defense, saying he's innocent and the accusation against him is part of a conspiracy by Bossier City police and the sheriff's and district attorney's offices.

    "I'm not a monster," he said. "I'm no cold-blooded killer. I'm a nice man. I'm a Christian."

Prosecutors say Yolanda McCoy moved out of town to get away from her estranged husband, but she left her son Greg Colston to live with his parents until school was out. On May 5, 2008, Robert McCoy went to the Patricia Plaza Housing Complex looking for his wife and her daughter. The woman wasn't there, and he killed her family members.

In the days after, Robert McCoy led authorities on a manhunt across several states before being arrested in Idaho and charged with three counts of first-degree murder.

The 12 jurors and two alternates Thursday heard the 911 call Christine Colston made from her home before the trio was murdered.

The victim is heard saying, "She's not here, Robert."

"I don't know what would have happened had Yalonda been in the house," Bossier-Webster District Attorney Schuyler Marvin said. "I submit the three victims would still have been murdered. ... Evidence of his flight showed consciousness of his guilt. He was getting out of Dodge."

In closing arguments, Defense Attorney Larry English said his client killed the victims, but he pleaded for McCoy's life. He called the defendant "crazy" and asked for a verdict of second-degree murder, which means life in prison.

"This case was never about whether Robert McCoy was guilty or not guilty," English told jurors. "This case was about whether Robert McCoy had the specific intent to kill. Robert McCoy doesn't have the mental capacity to form a specific intent; he's paranoid, delusional and wrapped up in his own world.

"My Lord, the man tried to commit suicide by chewing his arm off. He is crazy."

The penalty phase begins this morning before Bossier District Judge Jeff Cox.

Life or death: Bossier Parish jury deliberating McCoy sentence

BENTON, LA (KSLA) - Convicted killer Robert McCoy's life is now in the hands of a Bossier Parish Jury.

McCoy was convicted Thursday of 1st degree murder in the shooting deaths of three members of his estranged wife's family in their Bossier City home in May of 2008.

In closing arguments Friday afternoon, McCoy's defense attorney Larry English told the jury, "There's been too much death in this courtroom. I ask you to give Robert McCoy mercy."

Those closing statements followed testimony from relatives of the victims, and from a psychologist who testified as an expert witness for the defense in attempt to establish McCoy's insanity.

The psychologist testified that McCoy has a paranoid-narcissistic personality disorder, and that because of that, he fabricates his own reality in order to maintain a certain image of himself. He also testified that McCoy has a long history of treating women badly.

Closing arguments wrapped up with Bossier District Attorney Schuyler Marvin reminding the jury that , "Each of you swore to God you could do the right thing, and the right thing in this case is the death penalty."

Motions denied, Robert McCoy sentenced to death

Triple-murderer Robert McCoy has been sentenced to death by lethal injection, following months of delay since his conviction.

McCoy, 38, was found guilty of first degree murder in August 2011 for the deaths of his estranged wife's son and her parents.

His estranged wife's mother, Christine Colston-Young, stepfather Willie Young, and her son Greg Colston in their Bossier City home in May 2008 were shot to death in their Bossier City home in August 2008.

The jury recommended the death penalty. But before that sentence could be imposed, McCoy filed several motions in hopes of getting a new trial.

On Monday, each of those motions were argued and then rejected in Bossier Parish District Court. Among them, McCoy's claim that his attorney, Larry English, never told him that he was going to directly admit that his client did, in fact, commit the murders.

Bossier District Attorney Schuyler Marvin says admitting the crime up front is a strategy defense attorneys have been known to use: rather than deny the crime in spite of all the evidence, own up and ask the jury to spare the defendant's life. McCoy, however, has maintained his innocence.

McCoy on Monday was represented by attorneys with the New Orleans Capital Defense Project.

Now sentenced to death by lethal injection, officials say McCoy will be transferred to Angola as soon as possible.

    Louisiana v. McCoy

    Opinion Date: October 19, 2016

    Court: Louisiana Supreme Court

Defendant Robert McCoy was indicted by grand jury on three counts of first degree murder for the murders of Willie Ray Young, Christine Colston Young, and Gregory Lee Colston. After a trial, the jury found the defendant guilty as charged on all three counts. The trial court sentenced the defendant to death, in accordance with the jury’s determination. Defendant appealed his convictions and sentences, raising sixteen assignments of error. After a thorough review of the law and the evidence, the Louisiana Supreme Court found no merit in any of the assignments of error. Therefore, the Court affirmed defendant’s convictions and sentences.

Louisiana Supreme Court upholds conviction, sentence of murder suspect

On Wednesday, the Louisiana Supreme Court upheld the conviction and death sentence of Robert McCoy who was convicted for the 2008 killings of his estranged wife’s son, mother, and stepfather.

In August 2011, a Bossier Parish jury found Robert McCoy guilty of three counts of First Degree Murder in the deaths of Christine Young, Willie Young, and Gregory Colston.

The jury recommended a sentence of death after the penalty phase of the trial and the death sentence was imposed by Judge Jeff Cox in January, 2012.

Mr. McCoy appealed his case to the Louisiana Supreme Court. In January 2016, District Attorney Schuyler Marvin traveled to New Orleans to argue the case at length before the State’s highest court.

On Wednesday October 19, the Louisiana Supreme Court published an opinion affirming both the conviction and death sentence for Robert McCoy.

In the opinion, Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Scott Crichton writes, “It is my opinion that the trial court here navigated these complex issues in exemplary fashion, and it is for this reason I agree wholeheartedly with the opinion’s conclusion that Mr. McCoy’s assignments of error relating to his representation are wholly without merit.”

When asked about the ruling, District Attorney Schuyler Marvin added “We are pleased with the Supreme Court’s decision and are proud of all our partners in law enforcement who helped bring this killer to justice.”
