STERLING — Nicholas Sheley’s 20-minute apology, which he read through tears, on his knees and begging for his life in a Missouri courtroom on Oct. 4, arrived in the mail today at Sauk Valley Media.
It was postmarked Friday in Peoria, and is signed “Nick Sheley” but there is no return address, and no explanation accompanied the 14-page copy of a hand-written letter. Sheley’s brother Joshua lives in Peoria.
The 38-year-old Sterling native pleaded guilty in Jefferson County Court to two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of criminal intent in the 2008 beating deaths of Tom and Jill Estes, both 54, killed outside a Festus hotel. They were the last two of his eight victims.
Sheley agreed to plead guilty in return for the prosecution removing the death penalty as punishment for murdering the Arkansas couple. He will serve two life sentences without parole on the first-degree murder charges and two 75-year sentences for the criminal intent charges.
That’s in addition to the six life sentences he already is serving in Illinois for murders in Sterling, Rock Falls and Galesburg.
