Robert Lee Sadler Pleads Guilty Sentenced to LWOP in 2010 VA Slaying of Shana Hight

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A Virginia Beach sailor accused of killing his neighbor has been indicted on a capital murder charge, making him eligible for the death penalty.

Robert Lee Sadler was charged in January with first-degree murder in the death of Shana Hight. Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney Harvey Bryant tells The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk that a grand jury returned a capital murder charge against 22-year-old Robert Lee Sadler earlier this month.

Sadler is charged with capital murder in the commission of an abduction and capital murder in the commission of a sexual assault.

Hight was found dead in her apartment in September. Her husband was deployed with the Navy at the time of her killing.

Sadler lived two floors above Hight.

2 Va. Beach Navy murder trials delayed

NORFOLK, Va. — Two high-visibility Virginia Beach murder trials in which sailors are charged have been continued — likely until early next year, according to a court spokeswoman.

Gunner’s Mate Seaman Robert Lee Sadler, 22, faces the death penalty in the Sept. 13 death of Navy wife Shana Hight in a Virginia Beach apartment building, said spokeswoman Macie Pridgen. Sadler is charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of capital murder in the commission of abduction, and capital murder in the commission of a sexual assault. Hight’s husband of two years was deployed when she was killed.

An April motion hearing requesting a delay for the defense was bumped to June 28. The precise date will be chosen in early July and trial likely will occur in February or March, Pridgen said.

Sadler is assigned to Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron 6, according to Navy Personnel Command, but remains incarcerated in the Virginia Beach City Jail.

Electronics Technician 2nd Class Paul Stephen Bricker, 26, is charged with second-degree murder in the 2009 stabbing death of Chief Electronics Technician Gerard Curran, who prosecutors say arranged his own killing so his family would get his death benefits.

Although Curran was killed nearly two years ago, Bricker wasn’t arrested until Aug. 26, Pridgen said. The case was delayed due to the absence of a key witness, a Naval Criminal Investigative Service special agent now deployed to Africa on a long-term assignment. The agent will be back in time for a Nov. 16 suppression hearing and the case likely will go to trial in January, Pridgen said.

Bricker is free on $35,000 bond and is assigned to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, according to Fleet Forces Command.

Slain Navy wife's husband found dead

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia Beach Police are investigating a death on Bayhead Drive.

Detectives say they found Scott Dunn's body early Monday morning. Right now, police have classified this as a death investigation, as they await the Medical Examiner's report.

Dunn's friend told WAVY.com he knows exactly what happened. He claims he was with Dunn when he accidentally shot himself. He says he had been staying with Dunn for a couple weeks and that Dunn kept a gun by his bed since his wife's death.

Police found Shana Hight's body in their Bayhead Drive apartment last year. Robert Sadler was arrested and charged with her murder. Sadler is awaiting his trial later this month.

The Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney's Office issued the following statement following Scott Dunn's death:

“Our office was saddened to hear the news of Scott Dunn’s passing. This case has been tragic and continues to be so. We are prepared to go forward with the case against Sadler to seek justice for Shana.”

Virginia Beach sailor’s death ruled a suicide

The sailor found dead Sunday in his Virginia Beach apartment killed himself with a gunshot, the state medical examiner has ruled.

The finding confirms the preliminary assessment by police.

Electrician’s Mate 3rd Class Scott Michael Dunn, 23, was found after police responded to an emergency call late Sunday night. The call was made by a friend who was with Dunn at the time, Virginia Beach Police spokesman Jimmy Barnes said.

Dunn took his life in the same apartment complex where he had lived with his wife, Shana Hight, who was killed on Sept. 13, 2010, while Dunn was deployed aboard the carrier Harry S. Truman. Dunn had since moved to a different apartment within the same complex, located in the Shipps Corner neighborhood just off the southwest corner of Naval Air Station Oceana.

Hight and Dunn had been married two years when she was killed.

Hight’s accused killer has yet to stand trial and probably won’t until early 2012, according to courts spokeswoman Macie Pridgen. Gunner’s Mate Seaman Robert Lee Sadler, 22, is charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of capital murder in the commission of abduction, and capital murder in the commission of a sexual assault. If convicted on either of the capital murder charges, Sadler would face the death penalty.

Dunn, whose home of record is listed as Springfield, Mo., enlisted in July 2006, according to Navy Personnel Command. He was on orders to transfer from Naval Air Force Atlantic to the carrier Theodore Roosevelt at the time of his death. AIRLANT spokesman Mike Maus said the command is making plans for a memorial service to be held early next week.

Sadler is assigned to Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron 6, according to Navy Personnel Command, but remains incarcerated in the Virginia Beach City Jail.

Man gets life sentence for murdering Navy wife in Va. Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH - A man pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life without parole for killing a woman who lived in the same apartment complex.

Robert Lee Sadler III lived two floors above 24-year-old Shana Hight at Waterfront Apartments.

Hight, a Navy wife, was found dead in her apartment in September 13, 2010 while her husband was deployed.

Sadler, 22, was charged with capital murder in the commission of an abduction and capital murder in the commission of a sexual assault, which made the death penalty a possibility if convicted.
