This week a jury convicted Jurico Readus of gunning down a 15-year-old boy in 2006. Readus, who’s now 21, was 16 at the time of the murder.
Readus and an accomplice tried to rob the murder victim, Luis Reyes, and another person as the pair stood in the parking lot of the Hilltop House Apartments in the 1200 block of Aubra. While the accomplice rummaged through the victims’ pockets, Readus held them at gunpoint. When one of the victims started to fight with the other crook, Readus opened fire. Reyes was shot in the head, the second victim was shot several times and Readus’ accomplice was shot in the arm.
Police arrested Readus was arrested later that day
Readus was convicted of first degree murder and two counts of attempted especially aggravated robbery. He’ll be sentenced in May, but since he was a juvenile at the time of the crimes, he will face life in prison and not the death penalty.
