Death penalty sought
July 23, 2009
ODESSA AMERICAN
PECOS The state is seeking the death penalty against a man accused of killing two people last year in a Pecos bar.
Reeves County District Attorney Randall Reynolds said he filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty for Randall Lee Stephens, who was arraigned last week on two counts of murder in connection to the May 7, 2008, slayings of Richard and Alicia Cherry at D.J.’s Roundup Bar on West Third Street in Pecos.
Stephens pleaded not guilty to the charges during his arraignment.
Pecos Police Chief Clay McKinney said last year that Richard Cherry’s vehicle was found abandoned in New Mexico. Stephens was arrested by authorities in Alabama and was later extradited back to Texas to face the murder charges as well as a charge of failing to register as a sexual offender.
