Lewis was sentenced to death in Los Angeles County on November 1, 1984 for the murder and robbery of Milton Estell on October 27, 1983. They had gotten in touch because Mr. Estell had wanted to sell his 1980 Cadillac.

On March 1, 1990, the California Supreme Court reversed Lewis' death sentence on direct appeal.

On March 20, 1991, Lewis was re-sentenced to death in Los Angeles County.
On June 24, 2004, the California Supreme Court affirmed Lewis' death sentence on direct appeal.
