    Virginia just experienced an earthquake

It rattled me! No damage though.

    Earthquake rattles Washington, East Coast

An earthquake hit the East Coast Tuesday afternoon. The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake had a 5.8 magnitude and it’s center hit near the town of Mineral, Virginia.

People reported feeling the ground move in Washington, New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Cleveland.

In Washington, people spilled out onto the streets and reports came in that the earthquake was strong enough in Virginia to break glass and shake products off store shelves.

I'm up here in New York City at the moment and felt it.

I wonder what Carole King would have to say about today's event.

Us here on the eastern seaboard might be singing that this weekend. Earthquakes, hurricanes...........

I couldn't imagine experiencing a quake on the west coast. It was a creepy feeling.

Sometimes the seismograph numbers lie. I was once a few miles from the epicenter of a 7.1 and didn't even realize it had happened. At that time my office was on the ground floor of a very solid building, and I was also wearing a headset. It felt like someone had lightly kicked my desk. Granted, this was about an hour or so after I had finished off a few lunchtime cocktails. I wouldn't have even known it had my secretary not told me.

On the other hand, I also experienced a 5.7 which was very scary. The tremors lasted for what seemed to be a good minute - and yes the feeling was very weird and 'creepy' to say the least. So the duration of the tremors can play a large part, and ultimately, is equally responsible for much of the damage.

It's unnerving to say the least. I have never factored an earthquake into a natural disaster preparedness plan.

Heidi, did it affect the death row prison in Virginia or any prisons there?

That "2011 VA Earthquake" picture is hilarious! :highly_amused:

Funny you say that..I missed The 700 Club this morning. Regent University is about 5 miles from me. I am sure in the coming episodes the earthquake will be addressed.
