Allen Robinson, Jr. Sentenced in 2008 GA Slaying of Roshanda Dowell

District attorney seeks death penalty in '08 case

D.A. Greg Edwards refiles murder case with Dougherty Judicial Circuit grand jury for death penalty.

Dougherty Judicial Circuit District Attorney Greg Edwards said he will seek the death penalty for Allen Robinson Jr., now 37, for the stabbing death of his estranged girlfriend.

"Under the circumstances and in light of the facts of the criminal allegations of domestic violence," Edwards said, "this was a case I feel all options for the jury to select an appropriate punishment should be available."

Robinson was arrested in the Dougherty Judicial Circuit jurisdiction for abducting and fatally stabbing 30-year-old Roshanda Dowell multiple times in November 2008.

"He did it on front of a crowded supermarket," Edwards said. "There were plenty of witnesses."

Robinson is in Dougherty County Jail with no bond set, a jail spokeswoman said.

According to police reports Robinson, a former Dougherty County detention officer, has a 2008 history of domestic violence including battery, violating a family protection order and cruelty to children.

Saying that the deterrent value of a death sentence is not really known, Edwards wants anyone contemplating a violent act to know that he will go for the penalty when it is warranted.

"Anyone who does a premeditated violent act should be prepared for the death penalty," Edwards said. "This office will seek the death penalty when aggravating circumstances warrant it in domestic violence situations."

Former jailer enters not guilty to murder

A former Dougherty County jailer pleaded not guilty to murder charges Friday, as he was arraigned on nine counts related to the death of his former girlfriend in 2008.

37-year-old Allen Robinson is charged with stabbing and killing Roshanda Dowell in the parking lot of an East Albany grocery store.

The D. A. filed notice that he will seek the death penalty against Robinson, and he hopes to bring the case to trial this year.

"We'll probably have a final motions hearing within the next, at least September is the tentative date to have all of that done. Once the motions are resolved, the trial could be heard after sometime in September," said Dougherty D.A. Greg Edwards.

Robinson is being held without bond in the Dougherty County jail.

D.A. seeking death penalty in murder case

A hearing has been scheduled next month for motions in the capital murder trial of an Albany man.

The District Attorney is seeking the death penalty against 37-year-old Allen Robinson.

He's a former jailer charged with viciously slitting the throat of 30-year-old Roshanda Dowell in November 2008.

Investigators say dozens of horrified witnesses saw Robinson try to drag Dowell into his car in an East Albany parking lot then chase her and slash her with a knife.

The DA says the murder was pre-meditated. The hearing is scheduled for February 23rd at 9:30 a.m. at the courthouse.

    Death penalty trial indictments challenged

2 men who face death penalty trials are challenging their indictments. The group who represents the men say that they were not indicted by a grand jury that representative of the Albany - Dougherty County community.

They are engaged in a hearing today in Dougherty Superior Court, with Judge Stephen Goss presiding. That group calls itself Georgia Capital Defenders.

In February of 2011, Dougherty District Attorney Greg Edwards said he would seek the death penalty against Dontavius Thomas, charged with murdering a Dougherty County Police Lt. Cliff Rouse.

Edwards said ever since Rouse was gunned down chasing an armed robbery suspect, he felt he would seek the death penalty in the shooting suspect's trial.

Edwards said all the legal factors are there to seek the death penalty against Dontavius Thomas, charged with shooting Lt. Rouse twice as he ran from a convenience store armed robbery on Sylvester Road. But the D.A. said it was also important to the community.

About 2 dozen of Dowell's family members are present in the courtroom in Albany to hear the proceedings.

Former Sheriff's Office worker faces a judge

A former Dougherty County Sheriff's Office employee and murder suspect appeared in court Friday after he allegedly killed his girlfriend in November 2008.

Police say 30-year-old Rashonda Dowell was stabbed to death by Robinson in a supermarket parking lot on East Oglethorpe Boulevard in front of multiple witnesses.

Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards says, "that's why the state is seeking the death penalty, its a case that merits consideration by a jury of the imposition of the death penalty."

Inside the courtroom Defense Attorney H. Burton Baker presented the court with more than 100 preliminary motions for a specific reason.

Baker says, "when a defendant's life is at stake the court needs to be particularly sensitive to assure that every safe guard is observed."

The court only made it through 25 motions and the next court hearing for Robinson is scheduled for October 14th to go through the rest.

Murder suspect competent to stand trial

The case of a man charged with stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death, in 2008, is moving forward now that he’s been found competent to stand trial, according to District Attorney Greg Edwards.

“This was a very important motion in the case of Allen Robinson,” says Edwards.

The former Dougherty County Sheriff's Office employee and murder suspect allegedly killed his girlfriend in November 2008.

Police say 30-year-old Rashonda Dowell was stabbed to death by Robinson in a supermarket parking lot on East Oglethorpe Boulevard in front of multiple witnesses.

In 2013, Defense Attorney H. Burton Baker presented the court with more than 100 preliminary motions for a specific reason. "When a defendant's life is at stake the court needs to be particularly sensitive to assure that every safe guard is observed," said Baker.

Edwards confirms the state is seeking the death penalty in Robinson’s trial.

Allen Wade Robinson Jr. sentenced to life in prison in 2008 stabbing murder

Allen Wade Robinson Jr., who pleaded guilty in Dougherty Superior Court to charges including felony murder in a 2008 slaying, was sentenced to life in prison plus 35 years by Judge Stephen Goss this morning.

Robinson stabbed to death his estranged girlfriend, Roshanda Dowell, in the parking lot of an Albany grocery store in November 2008.

Robinson pleaded guilty to felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated stalking and possession of a knife in the commission of a felony.

He was originally charged with six additional counts of criminal offenses against Dowell, including malice murder, kidnapping with bodily injury and aggravated circumstances, with several of the charges were merged into the four he pleaded to.

The district attorney’s office initially had sought the death penalty in the case.

Robinson decided to enter the plea with no specific recommendation from the state as to sentencing during trial jury selection Monday.

Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards said Robinson not be eligible for parole for 30 years. With the additional time added, the prosecutor said, Robinson will effectively spend the rest of his life in prison.
