    Robert Blake Blurton - Missouri

Death Penalty Sought in Blurton Murder Case

Warsaw, MO -- The prosecuting attorney in Benton County, Missouri plans to seek the death penalty for Robert Blurton.

Blurton is charged with killing his aunt and uncle, Donnie and Sharon Luetjen, and their 15-year-old granddaughter, Taron, at their home in Cole Camp, Missouri last June.

Court documents show a witness identified Blurton's voice on a phone message from the night of the murders.

Court documents also say there is DNA that links Blurton to the crime.

Blurton's next court date is set for the end of April.

The defense is still weighing its options for requesting a change of venue.

Kansas man faces death penalty in slaying of relatives

A southeast Kansas man could face the death penalty after being convicted of murdering three of his relatives at their home in west-central Missouri.

KOLR-TV reports (http://bit.ly/14eBv2A) a Clay County jury recommended the sentence Saturday for 47-year-old Robert Blurton, of Garnett, Kan.

The same jury convicted Blurton late Friday of first-degree murder in the shootings of his aunt and uncle, Donnie and Sharon Luetjen, and their 15-year-old granddaughter, Taron Luetjen. The killings took place in June 2009 at the couple’s home in Cole Camp.

The trial was moved from Benton County to Clay County because of extensive publicity.

Investigators said Blurton killed the three after a robbery.

Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 9. Online court records show Blurton’s lawyer plans to file a motion for a new trial.

Blurton Receives Death Sentence for Cole Camp Triple Homicide

A Benton County man accused of killing a couple and their 15-year-old granddaughter in Cole Camp in 2009 was sentenced to death today by a Clay County judge hearing the case on a change of venue.

As recommended by the jury that found him guilty of first-degree murder, Blurton was sentenced to death for each of the three murders of Taron Luetjen and her grandparents, Donnie and Sharon Luetjen at their home in Benton County. The victims were Blurton's aunt and uncle, and his cousin’s daughter.

Investigators said Blurton killed the three after a robbery. According to court testimony, the family was tied up before being shot.

The Clay County jury, hearing the case after a change of venue, deliberated for nearly four hours and recommended the death penalty after the penalty phase of the trial.

Inmate to Challenge 3 Death Sentences in Mo. Supreme Court

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- A man sentenced to death for murdering three relatives in west-central Missouri in 2009 will tell the state Supreme Court this week he thinks he should have been convicted of a lesser crime.

Donnie and Sharon Luetjen and their 15-year-old granddaughter, Taron Luetjen, were bound and gagged and shot in the head in the couple’s home in Cole Camp in June, 2009. A nephew of the couple, Robbie Blurton, was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder and given three death sentences because the victims were restrained, the murders were carried out during the course of a robbery, and because of Blurton’s criminal history.

Blurton argues the jury should have been instructed about a lesser sentence of felony murder, which he says there was evidence to find him guilty of instead of first-degree murder. He also challenges cell phone and fingerprint evidence that put him at the scene, and the court’s decision not to let him argue at the trial that the Luetjens’ daughter could have been the murderer.

The state argues Blurton’s death sentences should be upheld because the jury didn’t need to be given instructions regarding the charge of felony murder. It also stands by the testimony regarding the cell phone use and fingerprints that linked Blurton to the scene, and says Blurton failed to offer any evidence that connected the Luetjens’ daughter to the murders.

The Court will hear the arguments Wednesday.

Missouri Supreme Court upholds death penalty for Kansas man convicted of 3 murders

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The Missouri Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence of a Kansas man convicted of killing three relatives in Missouri.

The court on Tuesday rejected appeals for Robert Blurton, who sought to have his convictions and sentence overturned. Blurton, of Garnett, Kan., was sentenced to death in June 2013 for the deaths of his aunt and uncle, Donnie and Sharon Luetjen and the couple’s 15-year-old granddaughter, Taron Luetjen. Prosecutors said Blurton killed his victims in June 2009 at the couple’s Cole Camp home during a robbery.

Blurton’s attorneys argued the trial judge made errors in allowing certain testimony and evidence, not instructing the jury on a possible second-degree murder conviction and not declaring a mistrial because some crime scene photographs were inadvertently displayed before the verdict.

Blurton isn’t in the MDOC inmate search but we should probably wait for official confirmation.
