Said Ali Biyad Sentenced to Life With The Possibilty Of Parole in 2006 KY Murders of His 4 Children

A state psychologist says a Louisville man charged with killing his four children and attacking his wife is mentally fit to stand trial on four counts of murder.

Attorneys for Said Ali Biyad have argued that he is incompetent and therefore should not face trial.

Psychologist Greg Perry met five times last year with Biyad, an immigrant from Somalia. Perry said Monday he believes Biyad would be able to follow trial proceedings.

Biyad is facing the death penalty for the Oct. 6, 2006, killings of his four children, ages 2-8. The children had their throats cut.

Biyad is also charged with attempted murder, rape and assault for an alleged attack on his wife, Fatuma Amir.

Man Accused Of Killing His Four Children Found Competent To Stand Trial

A Somali native charged with murdering his four children in Louisville has been found competent for a second time to stand trial.

Back in 2006, police say Said Biyad slit his four young children's throats at their Louisville apartment. Biyad is also charged with raping his wife.

A Jefferson County judge says Biyad is also eligible for the death penalty.

Last year, a psychologist testified Biyad was schizophrenic and not competent to stand trial. New psychological tests show otherwise.

Attorney for man accused of killing his four children wants to suppress his initial statements to police

On Monday, the attorney for Said Biyad, the Somali man accused of killing his four children, said he wants to suppress some of the things Biyad said to police in an initial interview.

Police said Biyad stabbed his four children to death at the Iroquois Homes Apartments in October 2006. They said he also raped and tried to kill his estranged wife.

If convicted, Biyad is eligible for the death penalty.

Trial delayed for Somali man charged with killing his four children

The trial of a Somali charged with killing his four children in the family's apartment in the Iroquois Homes public housing complex in 2006 has been delayed until Feb. 8.

Defense attorneys have said they will use the insanity defense in the trial of Said Biyad, who is accused of cutting his children's throats after raping his wife in the apartment. The trial was set to begin on Friday.

Because of the insanity defense, the prosecution recently asked for an evaluation at the Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center near La Grange to determine whether Biyad was insane at the time of the offenses. However, the evaluation has not been completed.

Jefferson Circuit Judge James Shake already has ruled twice that Biyad is competent to stand trial, meaning he understands the role of his defense, the judge and jury, and knows of the potential penalties in the murder case.

The trial will be decided by Shake, with no jury, and is expected to last three or four days.

Biyad, who is eligible for the death penalty, is facing the murder charges as well as charges of attempted murder, rape and assault on his wife, Fatuma Amir, who survived the Oct. 6, 2006, attack.

Biyad told police he and his wife had been fighting and he forced her to have sex, then hit her with a blunt object, according to court records.

When Amir regained consciousness, she fled to a bedroom and braced the door shut so Biyad could not enter, prosecutors said in court records.

Biyad then went to the rooms where his children slept and cut their throats, according to a transcript of an interview he had with police.

“It is not right, I did bad things,” Biyad told police, according to the transcripts.

Goshany, Khadija, Fatuma and Sidi Ali, ages 2 to 8, all died in the apartment in the 1400 block of Bicknell Avenue.

Accused murderer Said Biyad will soon learn fate

The father accused of brutally stabbing his four children to death will soon find out his fate.

Prosecutors say Said Biyad murdered his children in Oct. 2006. Those children were 2, 4, 7 and 8 years old.

He is also accused of raping his wife, who survived the attack.

Police say Biyad walked into headquarters the day his family was killed and made a shocking confession.

Both the prosecution and defense agreed that a judge should hear this case instead of a jury.

If convicted, Biyad could face life in prison. Prosecutors have taken the death penalty off the table.

Man found guilty on all counts in the murder of his 4 children, attempted murder of wife

A guilty verdict in Said Biyad trial, he's the man accused of killing his four children and raping and attempting to kill his ex-wife.

A judge took only a few minutes to find Biyad guilty on all counts.

He was spared the death penalty but will likely spend a long time behind bars.

Judge James Shake said he believed anger and jealousy led Said Biyad to kill his four children, then rape and attempt to kill his estranged wife.

The case bounced through the justice system for nearly half a decade, as the language barrier and claims of mental illness led to delays.

Hours before the verdict, Biyad took the stand to claim others murdered his family and someone even impersonated him in a videotaped confession played Thursday in court.

Prosecutors say the ruling meant they could finally put the case behind them.

Biyad will be sentenced by Judge Shake on June 9. He faces 20 years to life without parole.

A Somali man convicted of slaughtering his family at their Louisville home has been sentenced to life in prison in the case.

In 2006, Said Biyad beat and raped his wife and then went to the rooms of his four children, ages 2 through 8, and slashed their throats repeatedly.

The death penalty was considered an option in the case until both sides agreed to have a judge decide Biyad's fate rather than a jury. In April, the judge convicted Biyad of murder, attempted murder and other charges. He sentenced Biyad to life with the possibility of parole Thursday morning.
