Saudi Arabia beheaded two nationals on Monday in the eastern province of Al-Ahsa after convicting them of drug smuggling, the interior ministry said.

The pair, Mustafa bin Nuh al-Zain, and Anas bin Malik al-Duheim, were accused of establishing a drug-smuggling ring inside the kingdom and of trafficking in "large quantities" of drugs, the ministry said in a statement carried by the official Saudi news agency.

The beheadings are the first executions of 2012. According to an AFP count, the kingdom carried out 76 executions last year.

Amnesty international has repeatedly called on the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom to impose a moratorium on executions. According to the London-based watchdog, there are currently 140 people on death row in the kingdom.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia's strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law.

Saudi Arabia executes man who raped and killed female relative

Saudi Arabia executed a man on Wednesday for raping and killing a young relative of his in the ultra-conservative kingdom, the ministry of interior said in a statement.

The statement said the man, identified as Samy Ben Moe’ed Louify, lured a young girl related to him, and took her to an undisclosed location, rapped her and later strangled her with her own clothes and left her naked dead young body in the desert.

According to the ministry, he hit her on the head with a tent stake, breaking her skull, which led to her death.

Police arrested the man, who confessed to the crime and was transferred to a local court, where he given the death sentences.

“He killed her, smashed her head and strangled her after raping her. He was her relative and he should have protected her,” read the ministry’s statement.

The man was killed by beheading on Wednesday.

Saudi Arabia executed some 78 people in 2011, landing the kingdom as one of the leading countries to employ the death penalty globally.

The kingdom uses archaic methods in its capital punishment, such as separating the head from the body with swords. Some punishment takes place publicly. Stoning is also a regular practice in Saudi Arabia and it is also done publicly.

These methods continue to draw criticism around the world for their inhumane nature. Anti-capital punishment activists around the world continue to campaign against the kingdom and other countries with high numbers of executions such as Iran.

Saudi Arabia beheads man for murder

Saudi Arabia beheaded a man convicted of murder Sunday, the interior minister said in a statement, just two days after the UN expressed alarm at the scale of executions in the kingdom.

Jahaz al-Baqmi, who was executed in the southern Saudi city of Taif, was convicted of stabbing a man to death, according to a ministry statement released by the official SPA news agency, bringing the number of executions carried out in 2012 to four.

On Friday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights voiced alarm at the almost threefold increase in executions in Saudi Arabia last year.

"We are alarmed at the significant increase in the use of the death penalty in Saudi Arabia in 2011," said spokesman Rupert Colville at a regular press briefing.

"What is even more worrying is that court proceedings often reportedly fall far short of international fair trial standards, and the use of torture as a means to obtain confessions appears to be rampant," he added.

Saudi Arabia, which enforces a strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia law, applies the death penalty for a wide range of offences, including rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking.

At least 76 death row inmates were executed in 2011, according to an AFP count, while Amnesty International has said the kingdom executed 79 people last year.

In 2010, 27 people were executed, according to the UN, citing a report by Human Rights Watch.

Heidi, would you post an actual Saudi execution video? I'm curious from a medical perspective. The videos I've seen are pretty grainy and from a distance where you can't tell much.

Plenty around if you go on Liveleak or Bestgore.
The one you see in Riyadh are done on Chop Chop Square which is next to a shopping district. Out strolling on a Friday and you see...
