Jodi Arias defense aide banned from visiting her in jail

A member of Jodi Arias' defense team is banned from the jail in Phoenix where Arias is being held until her murder case's penalty phase starts in September.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says mitigation specialist Maria De La Rosa is banned from its jails because she recently took a drawing by Arias out of the jail.

The Sheriff's Office says the drawing is contraband and that De La Rosa cannot deliver things for Arias, who was convicted in May 2013 of first-degree murder in the 2008 killing of her boyfriend, Travis Alexander.

De La Rosa's attorney Dan Raynak tells The Arizona Republic that the ban is outrageous and that she only handled legal material.

Arias' attorney Jennifer Willmott says the drawing was of potential use in Arias' mitigation case.

Jodi Arias' defense team member is no longer banned from visiting clients in Phoenix jails

PHOENIX – A member of Jodi Arias' defense team is no longer banned from visiting her clients in Phoenix jails.

Mitigation specialist Maria De La Rosa had been banned since last Friday for taking a pencil drawing by Arias out of the jail last month.

Maricopa County Sheriff's officials say the drawing is contraband and De La Rosa cannot deliver things for Arias.

The ban was lifted after a telephone conference Wednesday involving lawyers for Arias and De La Rosa and the MCSO and County Attorney's Office.

Arias' artwork was presented in her first sentencing trial. Her lawyer says the confiscated drawing is of potential use in the mitigation case.

Arias was convicted in May of first-degree murder in the 2008 killing of her boyfriend. The case's penalty phase starts in September.

Report: Jodi Arias seeks restraining order against Sheriff Joe Apraio

Jodi Arias, who back in May 2013 was found of first-degree murder in connection with the death of her boyfriend Travis Alexander, wants a restraining order against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

According to a report by TMZ
, Arias believes that Arpaio installed cameras in her cell and won't let guards feed her unless she sings the Pledge of Allegiance every morning.

Additionally, Arias noted that she got Hepatitis C under Arpaio's watch after receiving a Tuberculosis shot from an infected needle.

Arias, who filed for the restraining order without the consultation of her lawyers, said she was then denied proper medical care.

While Arpaio told KTAR he'd look into the allegations, the long-time sheriff also said Arias' claims are baseless.

"I'm not concerned with it," Arpaio said. "She's just trying to get media attention by going after the media and this sheriff. She's not stupid. She knows she can generate some interest and the media will talk about it."

The jury selection portion of Arias' second penalty phase retrial is set to begin on Sept. 8, 2014.

New Jodi Arias lawsuit is bogus

PHOENIX -- A federal lawsuit that was reportedly filed by convicted killer Jodi Arias against Sheriff Joe Arpaio and HLN's Nancy Grace is a fake.Click here to see the fake lawsuit

The story, first reported by TMZ.com said that the Arias lawsuit filed in federal court was seeking a restraining order against Arpaio and Grace.

"According to her attorney today and Jodi herself said they had nothing to do with this lawsuit," said Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. "Even though it was sent to the district court."

Both Sheriff Arpaio and Arias's defense attorney, Jennifer Willmot, are disputing the story saying Arias was not behind the filing of the document that claims Arias was infected with Hepatitis C by a dirty needle in the Maricopa County Jail.

The bogus lawsuit also claimed Arias was denied medical care after one of her silicone breast implants leaked and caused a fungal growth. It also stated that Arpaio gave Nancy Grace love letters between Arias and a man named Christopher Alexander. Christopher Alexander was said to be the cousin of the man Arias killed, Travis Alexander.

The now discredited lawsuit also said that Arpaio makes Arias say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning or she won't get food, which the sheriff said isn't true. He explained that the jail plays the national anthem or "God Bless America," but inmates are not forced to sing.

"Once again in front of her attorney she denied being behind this," said Arpaio. "Whether it's true or not I don't know. On the other hand I think I'm going to task the federal government to investigate this document because her name is on it. To me that could be a forgery."

Asked & Answered: Locks of love and Jodi Arias

The circus trial of Jodie Arias, convicted of killing her boyfriend Travis Alexander, started all kinds of conversations. Even a question to Asked and Answered. This one had to do with a promise Arias made while making her plea to the jury to sentence her to life in prison, rather than the death penalty. Arias explained that in return for her life, she would start a prison book club, teach Spanish to fellow inmates, and continue to donate her hair to the Locks of Love charity. Locks of Love is an organization that takes donated hair, and manufactures wigs for children who have lost their hair because of cancer treatment, alopecia, or other diseases.

    Question from Kimberly:
Jodi Arias says she donated her hair three times to Locks of Love. Now that she is a convicted murder, will they still take her hair?

Answer: Locks of Love is headquartered in Florida, and after several phone calls and emails, I connected with Communications Director Lauren Boothby. She sent this reply from the president of Locks of Love, Madonna Coffman:

"Locks of Love does not maintain the identity of hair donors and therefore cannot confirm whether or not Jodi Arias has donated hair in the past."

Convicted murderer Arias due back in court this week ahead of September sentencing retrial

PHOENIX – Jodi Arias is due back in court this week as attorneys prepare for a second penalty phase.

Arias was convicted of murder last year for the 2008 killing of her lover in Arizona, but jurors couldn't reach a decision on a sentence.

Under state law, while her murder conviction stands, prosecutors have the option of putting on a second penalty phase with a new jury in an effort to secure a death sentence.

If the second panel fails to reach a unanimous decision, the death penalty will be removed from consideration. The judge then would sentence Arias to spend her life behind bars or be eligible for release after 25 years. The second penalty phase is set for September.

Arias is back in court on Friday for a hearing.
