Recap: Week 5 of Jodi Arias trial

After the State of Arizona rested their case, Jodi Arias’ defense team took center stage this week as they presented their case to the jury for the first time. Arias claims she stabbed her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander, 29 times, shot him in the face, and slit his throat from ear to ear in self-defense. If convicted, she faces a possible death sentence.

    Former lover defends Arias

Gus Searcy, a Prepaid Legal Executive Director, was the first defense witness called to testify Tuesday.

Searcy testified that he served as a mentor to Arias while she was looking to become more successful in the business of selling legal insurance.

During an overnight stay at his house, Searcy said Arias was crying and shaking after she talked to Alexander on the phone.

Darryl Brewer, Arias’ 52-year-old ex-boyfriend, testified Arias was never jealous or violent during their relationship, and the two remained friends when they split after four years.

In the summer of 2006, a few months after Arias joined Prepaid Legal, she “had become a different person that I’d known previously,” Brewer said.

“We stopped being intimate” after Arias adopted the Mormon faith and became more religious, Brewer testified. “She said she was saving herself for her husband.”

Brewer’s testimony also revealed that Arias stopped by his house the day before Alexander was killed and she asked if she could borrow two 5-gallon gas cans for a long road trip. Brewer said Arias never returned the cans.

During cross-examination, prosecutor Juan Martinez suggested Arias was sexually aggressive when he asked Brewer if he and Arias ever had anal sex. Brewer responded by saying they were equally aggressive and had anal sex on one occasion.

On re-direct, defense attorney Kirk Nurmi asked Brewer if he ever called Arias sexually explicit names like “whore” and “slut.” Brewer denied ever calling Arias those names.

    Ex-girlfriend calls victim a cheater

Testimony from the victim’s ex-girlfriend Wednesday painted an unflattering picture of Alexander as a cheater, liar and hypocrite who pursued marriage with one woman while having sex with another.

Lisa Daidone, formerly known as Lisa Andrews, said she had an on-again-off-again relationship with Alexander for almost eight months from July 2007 to February 2008.

Daidone said Alexander was interested in marriage soon after they started dating, but they broke up when she learned Alexander cheated on her with Arias.

The witness said that while she was with Alexander, they never had sex, and she was shocked to find out after his death that Alexander wasn't a virgin.

In a dramatic moment, prosecutor Martinez, without any warning, flashed a photo of Alexander’s dead body on the court’s projector.

The witness was taken aback and Alexander’s sisters began to cry. One of them stormed out of the courtroom while Arias broke down and wept.

Martinez asked Daidone if any of Alexander’s behaviors warranted him having his throat slit. The defense objected and Daidone never answered the question.

Siblings Desiree and Daniel Freeman testified Wednesday that Alexander and Arias had accompanied them on two overnight trips, one to Sedona and the Grand Canyon and another to Havasupai in September 2007.

The witnesses said Alexander appeared to be different with Arias, acting more affectionate with her when they were alone and distant when they were in large groups.

Daniel Freeman also recalled a heated argument between Alexander and Arias before one of their trips during which Arias became very upset and cried.

    Phone sex evidence emerges

When Daniel Freeman was called back to finish his testimony Thursday, jurors asked him a series of questions, including if he’d ever seen Alexander be abusive to Arias and whether he ever heard him call Arias names. Freeman answered no to all the questions, and said their fights were much like arguments all couples have.

Freeman said when he called Arias to inform her of Alexander’s death she was initially silent but later began to cry.

As a member of the Mormon Church, Freeman said Alexander risked being ex-communicated if it was ever revealed that he engaged in pre-martial sex with another church member.

After a two-hour wait while the judge reviewed a defense exhibit for admissibility, testimony resumed with forensic computer examiner Lonnie Dworkin.

Dworkin testified that an examination of the victim’s laptop revealed there had been internet access between 4:08 a.m. and 4:45 a.m. on June 4, 2008.

The witness also testified he was able to retrieve photos from a mirror imaged of Alexander’s damaged hard-drive.

Jodi Arias Takes the Stand and Says She Killed Travis Alexander, Planned Suicide

Jodi Arias took the stand today and quickly told the jury that she killed her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander in a bloody attack in 2008.

And in a surprise, Arias told the jury that she planned to also kill herself.

"Did you kill Travis Alexander?" defense attorney Kirk Nurmi asked Arias immediately after she took the stand.

"Yes," Arias said softly, turning to look at the jury.

    "Why?"

"The simple answer is that he attacked me and I defended myself," she said.

Arias also explained why she said in a news interview, "No jury would ever convict" her of murdering Alexander. At the time she said it was because she was innocent, but on the stand today she said she made that statement because she had plans to commit suicide after the interview. The interview took place in September 2008, three months after the killing.

"I was very confident that no jury would convict me because I was sure I'd be dead," she said. "Those are probably the most bitter words I'll ever eat."

Arias is on trial for murdering Alexander by stabbing him 27 times, slashing his throat, and shooting him in the head twice. She could face the death penalty if convicted.

Nurmi questioned Arias about her early childhood, eliciting statements from Arias that she was subjected to frequent, violent beatings from her mother and father, who used belts, spoons, and their hands to discipline her and her siblings.

Earlier in the day, the defense continued their attempt to show that Alexander was controlling and abusive toward Arias during their yearlong relationship and the year after, during which they continued a sexual relationship.

A woman's T-shirt emblazoned with the possessive "Travis Alexander's" and a pair of pink panties with the word "Travis'" on the front hint at the controlling nature and abusive attitude that existed between Alexander and Jodi Arias in the months before she killed him, defense attorneys said today.

Defense attorneys also questioned porn on Travis Alexander's computer during today's testimony.

Arias is accused of murder for Alexander's death, but her defense attorneys claim she killed him in self defense because he was an abusive and controlling "sexual deviant." The pair dated for a year before breaking up, but continued to have a sexual relationship for another year until Alexander's death.

The photo of the T-shirt and panties were found on Arias' camera in July 2008, more than a month after Arias killed Alexander on June 4.

"The photo of 'Travis Alexander's' and 'Travis', both written in the possessive form, will be relied on by our experts discussing the controlling nature of the relationship (between Alexander and Arias), the possessive nature of the relationship, and what that does to a woman," defense attorney Jennifer Willmott said today after the prosecution objected to the photos.

Prosecutor Juan Martinez asked Dworkin whether he knew when the words were put on the shirt and panties. When Dworkin said he could not determine when they were created, Martinez suggested that could have been done after Alexander was killed.

The defense also showed items from Alexander's internet search history from the early morning hours before he was killed, showing that he watched YouTube videos of scantily-clad women dancing to pop music and visited a proxy server, which covers one's IP address while surfing the internet. The defense will try to prove that Alexander was obsessed with looking at sexual content on his computer.

"I recall there was some pornography on the computer," Lonnie Dworkin, the computer forensic analyst testifying for the defense, told the court. "I don't recall specifically if there were women's breasts or other content."

Dworkin combed the hard drives and memory cards of computers and cameras owned by Arias and Alexander. He found images including the T-shirt and underwear, pictures of Arias hugging friends and a dog, and pictures of a penis that Alexander sent Arias on the internet, according to his testimony.

The defense has spent the past week presenting evidence that Alexander kept up appearances of being a devout Mormon and a virgin in his social life, but had an erotic sex life with Arias that included sending her a lewd picture of himself, phone sex, anal sex, oral sex, and taking nude photos of one another in sexual positions.

She is expected to testify before the defense finishes presenting its case.

Arias could face the death penalty if convicted of murder, which prosecutors say was premeditated and extremely cruel in that she stabbed him 27 times, slashed his throat, and shot him twice in the head. They have also argued that she lied to investigators and friends about killing Alexander until she was cornered with a mountain of evidence proving that she did. She then said she killed him in self-defense, they argue.

Jodi Arias Has A Secret Jailhouse Lesbian Lover, According To Nancy Grace

She has been branded a femme fatale and a man-killer, but now death penalty murder defendant Jodi Arias has directed all her flirtatious charm at a fellow female prison inmate, according to a new report.

Veteran HLN host, Nancy Grace, recently visited the Estrella Jail in Phoenix, Arizona, where the once blonde bombshell is being held, and reports that she discovered Arias has a secret lesbian lover.

As RadarOnline.com previously reported, the now mousey brunette Jodi, 32, is accused of murder after shoot 30-year-old motivational speaker Travis Alexander in the face, stabbing him 27 times and slitting his throat from ear-to-ear in his Mesa, Arizona home in June 2008 — her defense team claim it was in self-defense.

The emergence of the alleged new girlfriend proves that Arias has the ability to “charm herself into any relationship,” legal expert Matt Zarrell told HLN. “She has charmed herself into yet another relationship, but this time it is with the same sex, with a female.”

While the identity of Jodi’s reported special gal pal was not revealed, after over four years behind bars she has certainly had ample time to get serious with a new lover, and a torrent of damning testimony during her trial so far has painted Arias as someone who easily turns their emotions on and off.

As we previously reported, just hours after allegedly murdering Travis, the pretty brunette drove to Utah and spent the night with Ryan Burns, during which time they hooked up and “she got on top of me pretty impressively,” he told the Maricopa County Court during his testimony.

“She is strong. She had close to a six-pack,” he further revealed.

Arias’ sexually-charged relationship with Alexander, a devout Mormon, has also been exposed courtesy of raunchy text messages and dirty photos they took of each other on the day of his death.

Woman charged in lover’s slaying in Arizona gives graphic description of sexual relationship

A woman charged with killing her lover in the shower of his Arizona home described in graphic detail Wednesday how he made repeated sexual advances all while converting her into the Mormon faith during their heated initial courtship.

Jodi Arias, 32, took the witness stand on what was a provocative day of testimony about the volatile relationship that culminated with her stabbing Travis Alexander to death after a lust-filled day of sex and raunchy photographs.

Arias spent the first two days of testimony recounting her childhood and troubled romances in her teens and 20s, and got to key details of her relationship with Alexander on Wednesday.

She faces the death penalty if convicted of murder in a case that seemed made for the tabloids with its tales of sex, violence and betrayal. Trial was set to resume Monday.

Her defense team put her on the stand in an apparent attempt to gain sympathy with jurors in hopes that they see her as the victim of a domineering womanizer. She says the killing was self-defense, and says Alexander belittled her and used her for sex.

Prosecutors have portrayed Arias as a jealous ex-girlfriend who snapped and killed the motivational speaker and successful businessman.

The testimony was an unusual mix of Mormon theology and X-rated descriptions of their relationship. At one point, naked pictures of Alexander were shown in the courtroom.

Alexander, a Mormon, persuaded Arias to become a member of the church and performed her baptism in late 2006, she said.

But at the same time, she said she felt uncomfortable by Alexander’s behavior in the bedroom that seemed to contradict the church’s teachings that forbid sex before marriage.

On the same day that he baptized her, Arias said the two went into a bedroom, removed their church clothes and engaged in sexual intercourse that she called painful. Alexander told her the sex was OK under Mormon teachings because their encounter did not involve vaginal intercourse.

Arias said she believed Alexander was using her for sex, and had little interest in connecting with her on an emotional level or even holding her hand in public.

“I kind of felt like a prostitute,” she said at one point.

Arias has described physical and emotional abuse at the hands of family and lovers and cast Alexander as someone who took advantage of her. Arias told investigators that she went to Alexander’s home for sex on the day of the killing, but he turned violent, forcing her to fight for her life.

She said she first met Alexander at a Las Vegas convention in late 2006 after years of bad relationships. She was almost immediately enamored by him, and it appeared he was taken with her, too. She suddenly saw both personal and professional opportunities.

Arias said she soon ended her relationship with another man, and within a week, she saw Alexander again. That’s when things became sexual, she testified.

They carried on a long-distance relationship between her home in California and his in Mesa, Ariz., and their relationship began to take off. She said they made a trip to Missouri and Illinois to visit significant Mormon landmarks and to attend a work convention in Oklahoma where he became closed-off and flirted with another woman in front of her.

She claims they dated for about five months, then broke up but continued to see each other for sex. Alexander’s friends said she stalked him after the breakup and became possessive and jealous.

Authorities said they found her hair and bloody palm print at the scene of the killing, along with time-stamped photographs on a memory card in a camera discovered inside Alexander’s washing machine that place Arias there on the day he died. The photos included one of Arias nude on his bed, one of Alexander alive in the shower, and one of his body on the bathroom floor.

In the trial that began in early January, defense attorneys have yet to explain why Arias apparently attempted to clean the scene, washing Alexander’s bedding and the camera, and what happened to the weapons.

Authorities say Alexander was shot in the head with a .25 caliber gun, the same caliber Arias’ grandparents reported stolen from their Northern California home about a week before the killing.

From what I've read I don't believe a word she says. She seems like she's making any and all attempts to cast herself in a good light so the jyry believes she couldn't of possibly cold bloodedly murdered this man and it must have been self defence. Should be interesting to see if it works.
