Larry Nassar sentenced to 40 to 175 years in state prison (on top of a 60-year federal sentence)

LANSING, Mich. -- Larry Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison on Wednesday after seven days of impact statements from more than 150 girls and women who said he sexually abused them. The former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State doctor, who hung his head and cried periodically during the sentencing hearing, told the courtroom he would carry his victims' words with him "for the rest of my days."

Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said Nassar's "decision to assault was precise, calculated, manipulative, devious, despicable."

"It is my honor and privilege to sentence you. You do not deserve to walk outside a prison ever again," she said. "You have done nothing to control those urges, and anywhere you walk, destruction will occur to those most vulnerable."

Aquilina added: "I just signed your death warrant."

Nassar, 54, received a 60-year federal prison sentence in December for child pornography charges.

He gave a statement before his sentencing on Wednesday, turning at times to address the courtroom gallery.

"Your words these past several days have had a significant emotional effect on myself," he said. "I will carry your words with me for the rest of my days."

Prosecutor Angela Povilaitis had asked Aquilina to sentence Nassar to up to 125 years -- one year for every person who had submitted a police report at the time of his guilty plea.

Nassar's minimum sentence is 40 years, and it will be served after his federal sentence expires. The maximum sentence of 175 years stays within the sentencing guidelines. Nassar will get credit for time served for the past year. He will first be eligible for parole in 99 years -- in the year 2117.

Though Nassar apologized during his statement, Aquilina read sections of a letter he submitted to the court last week in which he maintains that what he did was medical and not sexual in nature. He wrote that media reports sensationalized the stories about his abuse and that he was forced to admit that they were sexual in nature in order to get a plea deal.

"I was a good doctor," he wrote.

Aquilina asked if he wanted to withdraw his plea, and Nassar said he did not. She asked: "You are guilty, aren't you?" He paused before saying that he stood by his plea.

Nassar pleaded guilty to 10 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in November. This week's hearing was for seven of those charges that occurred in Ingham County, where Michigan State is located. Next week, Nassar will be sentenced for three others in nearby Eaton County, where he lived and saw patients at Twistars Gymnastics.

A total of 156 people, which included women, girls and their parents, provided impact statements during seven days of the sentencing hearing in Lansing. Roughly two dozen more submitted written statements that weren't read aloud in court. Along with recounting their experiences with Nassar and telling him that they planned to take their power back from him, many who gave statements criticized Michigan State and USA Gymnastics for ignoring complaints about the disgraced doctor for nearly two decades.

"These have been important narratives to hear and witness and listen to," Povilaitis said on Wednesday. "They will be the words that burn down cultural stereotypes and cultural myths. ... [Nassar] is possibly the most prolific child abuser in history."

Aquilina spoke harshly about Nassar throughout the weeklong sentencing hearing, at one point telling him that if cruel and unusual punishment was allowable she would have others abuse him in the same way he abused his victims.

On Wednesday, Rachael Denhollander, a 32-year-old attorney and mother of three who in September 2016 was the first woman to publicly accuse Nassar of sexual assault, delivered the final impact statement. Many of the people who went before her cited Denhollander's bravery in coming forward as the reason why they appeared in court this week. She asked Aquilina and the court repeatedly: "What is a little girl worth?"

Denhollander detailed her path to the Lansing courtroom, which included law school and meticulously compiling a file so police would take her claims seriously before she filed the first report in the case more than a year ago. She criticized Michigan State for long ignoring calls for help about Nassar and for the response from the university's leaders since her accusations became public. She said she pities Nassar for losing the ability to determine between good and evil.

"You could have had everything you pretended to be," she said. "Every woman who stood up here truly loved you as a child -- real, genuine love."

Attorneys met in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Wednesday morning to discuss the timeline of a civil suit against Nassar, Michigan State, USA Gymnastics and several individuals from both institutions that is expected to begin when Nassar's hearings are complete. Michigan's attorney general also plans to review the case to determine if anyone else who enabled Nassar during the past quarter-century should be held criminally accountable for their actions.

Denhollander called Wednesday's sentence a victory. Her message for the future: "Do it better next time."

Michigan cops to apologize for believing Larry Nassar over 17-year-old victim

    By Nicole Darrah
    Fox News

A Michigan police department plans to publicly apologize on Thursday to one of Larry Nassar’s victims for reportedly not accepting her 2004 complaint against the former USA Gymnastics doctor.

Brianne Randall-Gay, who spoke at Nassar’s sentencing in Michigan last week, filed a police report with the Meridian Township Police Department in September 2004, Fox 47 reported. Randall-Gay, then 17, claimed Nassar touched her breast and vagina for several minutes during a visit in which he was supposed to examine her scoliosis.

The police report released Wednesday, according to the Lansing State Journal, stated that Nassar had removed Randall-Gay’s underwear and massaged her backside with his elbow and said, “I bet people at physical therapy don’t do this.”

Randall-Gay also told police that Nassar tried to put his finger inside of her vagina, but couldn’t because she was wearing a tampon, The Detroit News reported.

“[Nassar] said he wanted to see her once a week for a while, for about an hour per visit. He made several appointments for her,” the report read

Randall-Gay said she felt “uncomfortable” and “scared” after her appointment with Nassar and had a rape kit processed at a hospital.

The disgraced doctor told police at the time that he had touched Randall-Gay “in the perineum,” and said his treatment of the teen required touching her body in those areas as part of a ligament release — and even provided a roughly 25-slide PowerPoint presentation to authorities to detail his technique.

Appearing at Nassar’s sentencing last week in Ingham County Court in Michigan, Randall-Gay said that Nassar, when questioned by police, “had the audacity to tell them I misunderstood the treatment because I was not comfortable with my body.”

“Sadly, they took your word instead of mine,” Randall-Gay said. “I wasn’t afraid of you then and I’m sure as hell not afraid of you now.”

The manager of Meridian Township — which reportedly paid $1,385 for Randall-Gay’s flight from Seattle to Michigan to testify in court — admitted in a statement that Nassar “deceived” police.

"We missed it," Manager Frank Walsh said. "We’re not going to hide it. We were deceived." He added that the township always wanted to release the report and did “as soon as the attorney general’s office provided the ability for us to do so.”

The township has planned a public apology for Randall-Gay on Thursday, which Walsh said is “the right thing to do,” adding the town will “focus on what we can do going forward to give victims of sexual assault a strong voice and to listen and be a champion for prosecution.”

Another wave of Nassar victims confronted Nassar at his third and final sentencing hearing on Wednesday – this time about sexual abuse at an elite Michigan club run by an Olympic coach.

Nassar had previously been sentenced to 60 years in prison for child pornography crimes, and last week was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for abusing young women and girls while working at Michigan State University.

The number of people who allege they were abused by Nassar has jumped to 265.

Larry Nassar almost attacked by victim's father in dramatic courtroom scene

    By Kathleen Joyce
    Fox News

The father of three Larry Nassar sex assault victims won't be charged after he lunged at the disgraced doctor in a Michigan courtroom Friday, just moments after yelling he wanted "one minute with that b------!"

After two of his daughters spoke, the father, Randall Margraves, asked the judge to grant him “five minutes in a locked room with this demon.” The judge denied the request, so the man asked for one minute and then lunged at Nassar.

Court officers almost immediately subdued the man and he was not able to reach Nassar, who is accused of abusing hundreds of young girls.

“I want that son of a b----! Give me one minute with that b------!” Margraves yelled as he was handcuffed.

Two of Margraves' daughters gave statements to the court and said their other sister had also been molested by Nassar. Crying could be heard in the courtroom as Nassar was escorted out. Assistant Attorney General Angela Povilaitis told families in the courtroom to "use your words" and that violence "is not helping your children."

A few hours following the incident, Margraves apologized to the courtroom and told Judge Janice Cunningham, “I lost control.” The judge said there was “no way” she would punish the father.

Cunningham said a punishment isn't appropriate based on the crimes committed by Nassar and the anguish felt by families. But she also says it's wrong to "combat assault with assault.”

Nassar was in court awaiting his third and final sentencing for sexual assaults under the guise of medical treatment. The charges in this case focused on his work with Twistars, an elite Michigan gymnastics club headed by an Olympic coach.

Last week, the disgraced doctor was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for sexually assaulting young female athletes. The former USA Gymnastics doctor and Michigan State University trainer pleaded guilty to the sexual assaults.

Nassar was expected to hear from more victims who said he molested them. The proceedings were expected to extend into next week. On Wednesday, Judge Janice Cunningham said a total of 265 victims came forward alleging Nassar abused them.

The scandal rocked the gymnastics world. Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette announced Saturday an investigation has been launched into Michigan State University’s handling of sexual abuse allegations against Nassar. Following the outcry over the school’s handling of Nassar’s sexual abuse allegations, MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon resigned and Mark Hollis, the school’s athletic director, retired.

The entire USA Gymnastics board of directors resigned Wednesday amid the fallout. A report by The Wall Street Journal alleged the U.S. Olympic Committee “didn’t intervene in USA Gymnastics’ handling of sexual abuse allegations against Nassar” and found evidence of “possible criminal behavior” by the disgraced doctor.

The USOC declined to comment on the report.

Dad who charged at Larry Nassar receiving hundreds of donations

    By Amy Lieu
    Fox News

A distraught father who lunged at disgraced USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar in a court proceeding Friday seems to have a lot of support from the public.

As of early Saturday, more than 700 donors had pledged a total of more than $23,000 to help Randall Margraves, whose daughters were among Nassar's molestation victims.

Co-worker Aaron Pangborn said he set up the GoFundMe page to help Margraves with any potential legal fees resulting from Friday's courtroom incident, which was captured on video.

Pangborn described the mission as “to help a brother and friend in need.”

“As father of 2 girls, the video made me cry … that you were stopped before you reached him,” supporter Robert Wykoski wrote. “I would do the same.”

Margraves leaped at Nassar on Friday after listening to two of his daughters deliver victim-impact statements, the New York Post reported.

He requested five minutes alone with the “demon,” then used an expeltive to describe Nassar. When the judge said no, he asked for one minute. When she declined again, he ran at Nassar, but court officers tackled him almost immediately and arrested him, the Post reported.

Judge Janice Cunningham ultimately opted against charging Margraves with contempt of court, but said she could have.

“There is no way that this court is going to issue any type of punishment given the circumstances of this case,” Cunningham told Margraves after he apologized a "hundred times," the New York Post reported.

Margraves admitted he “lost his cool.”

“I came here in support of my daughters … I’m not here to upstage [them],” Margraves said. “I’m here to help them heal.”

He agreed to not attend any future court proceedings involving Nassar.

Pangborn said on the page that he would work with Margraves and his family to ensure that the funds collected will go to a good cause to help victims of sexual abuse.

Father who lunged at Larry Nassar in court will donate GoFundMe earnings

    By Lucia I. Suarez Sang
    Fox News

The distraught father who tried to attack former gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar in a Michigan court said he will be donating the $31,000 he received during an online fundraising campaign to charities that help sexual abuse victims.

In a statement Thursday, Randy Margraves thanked the people who donated money to a GoFundMe account, but said he did not want it.

He said people can ask for refunds and any money left in the account after March 9 will be donated to several charities that help survivors of sexual abuse.

The charities include Small Talk, RAVE and the Firecracker Foundation.

Margraves played no role in the GoFundMe effort. He thanked fellow members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

“At the time of the incident, I didn't know that the great brotherhood had done this, and I was overcome with gratitude when I found out," Margraves said. "I appreciate everyone stepping up to support me, but help is not needed for me."

Margraves' three daughters said they were sexually assaulted by Nassar, the former Michigan State University doctor who molested gymnasts and other females.

Margraves last week appeared in court in Eaton County, Michigan, and tried to attack Nassar after telling a judge he would “like five minutes” with him, but sheriff's deputies stopped him. He apologized to the judge and said he lost control.

U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D.-Mich., said Wednesday that it was too bad that court officers stopped Margraves from punching Nassar.

Stabenow said she "would have liked five minutes" with Nassar as well.

"I only wish that the security had been a little slower in constraining him 'til he could have gotten a couple of punches out,” she said during a news conference in Washington, D.C.

Larry Nassar transferred to same prison as Elizabeth Smart's kidnapper, former NY hitman: report

    By Bradford Betz
    Fox News

Larry Nassar, the disgraced doctor who was convicted of sexually abusing girls and young women -- including U.S. Olympic gymnasts -- has been transferred to a federal prison in Arizona that houses a notorious kidnapper and a former New York cop-turned-hitman.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons online inmate registry on Saturday showed that 54-year-old Nassar was listed as an inmate at U.S. Penitentiary Tucson -- a high-security prison that houses 1,387 inmates along with a satellite minimum security facility in Pima County that houses 149 inmates, the Arizona Republic reported.

One inmate serving a life sentence there is Brian David Mitchell, the former Utah street preacher who kidnapped 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart and held her captive for nine months, the newspaper reported.

Louis Eppolito -- the New York City police detective-turned-hitman for organized crime -- is reportedly also an inmate there.

Other notable inmates who served time at the Tucson facility include former south Boston crime boss, James J. "Whitey" Bulger, convicted mass shooter Jared Loughner, and former U.S. Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham, the California Republican who resigned in 2005 after pleading guilty to corruption charges.

Nassar faces two long prison sentences in Michigan for molestation. But first he must serve 60 years in federal prison his child pornography conviction.

More than 250 women and girls gave statements about the abuse in two Michigan courtrooms in recent weeks.

Michigan State Is Obstructing Larry Nassar Abuse Probe, Says Prosecutor

    Daily Beast

A special prosecutor has threatened to seek a search warrant against Michigan State University after accusing it of withholding “critical” documents that could determine how school officials handled allegations surrounding disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar. The attorney general’s office said the college is “wrongfully withholding information,” but the school insisted it is cooperating, while also asserting attorney-client privilege in withholding some documents and redacting others. “Without knowing more specifics on what exactly MSU is accused of withholding, it’s hard for me to comment,” said Michigan State spokeswoman Emily Guerrant. “We have handed over more than 75,000 documents to the AG’s office, and have been thoroughly cooperating with their investigation.” However, investigator William Forsyth said he has not received the documents he needs to carry out his review, alleging that the university has provided “irrelevant” documents, including the school’s bedbug-control policy.

Disgraced Sports Doctor Larry Nassar Stabbed Multiple Times At Florida Federal Prison

    Breaking911

According to prison union official Joe Rojas, Larry Nassar, the disgraced sports doctor convicted of sexually abusing female gymnasts, was involved in an altercation with another inmate at a federal prison in Florida.

Rojas stated that Nassar was stabbed multiple times, including twice in the neck, twice in the back, and six times in the chest, resulting in a collapsed lung. Nassar is reported to be in stable condition.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an inmate was assaulted at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex on Sunday afternoon but did not disclose the identities of the individuals involved.

Prison staff administered life-saving measures, and the Nassar was subsequently transported to a local hospital for treatment.

“No staff or other inmates were injured and at no time was the public in danger. An internal investigation is ongoing,” officials said in a statement.

Nassar was sentenced to hundreds of years for his crimes.

"There is a point in the history of a society when it becomes so pathologically soft and tender that among other things it sides even with those who harm it, criminals, and does this quite seriously and honestly. Punishing somehow seems unfair to it, and it is certain that imagining ‘punishment’ and ‘being supposed to punish’ hurts it, arouses fear in it." Friedrich Nietzsche
