    China Executions 2012

China executes three over deadly hotel arson
    29th Mar :

    AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE

BEIJING: China on Thursday executed three arsonists held responsible for a deadly hotel fire last year that killed 11 people and injured more than 30 others, state media reported.

The victims at the budget hotel in the northeastern Jilin province -- part of a chain called Home Inns -- died of smoke inhalation after the fire started in a stairwell and sent thick plumes of smoke to the upper floors.

On Thursday, the Intermediate People's Court in Tonghua city - where the incident took place -- announced three people blamed for starting the fire had been sentenced to death and executed, Xinhua news agency said.

The report did not elaborate on why the three started the fire last year on May 1. The court was unavailable for comment when contacted by AFP and an official at Jilin's superior court said he was not aware of the case.

According to Amnesty International, China executes more people than the rest of the world put together, although it has reduced the number of offences facing the death penalty, abolishing its use for 13 mainly white collar crimes.

Man Executed for 2009 Stabbing Spree in Beijing

A 50-year-old man was executed in Beijing Friday for killing two and injuring 14 others in the capital's downtown area in 2009.

Zhang Jianfei, a native of northeast China's Jilin province, was found guilty in 2010 of endangering public security by stabbing two to death and injuring another 14 in the Dashila area on Sept. 17, 2009.

Tourists, security guards and salesmen at roadside shops were among the victims.

Zhang, a former worker at a primary school in Yongji county of Jilin, blamed his actions on him becoming emotionally distraught while looking for a job.

He argued that he was drunk at that time, and but forensic doctors concluded following an investigation that Zhang was only slightly drunk and had the full ability to control himself.

Zhang's death penalty was meted out in November 2010. The verdict has been approved by the Supreme People's Court, as required.

China executes 3 Taiwanese for drug trafficking

China executed three Taiwanese drug smugglers on Tueday as UN observed International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Beijing said that 9.22 lakh Chinese were sent for "compulsory isolation treatment" in the last four years for drug rehabilitation in the country.

Chen Tianlu, Xu Futai and Wang Zhenzong, all hailing from Taiwan, were executed in Zhangzhou in east China's Fujian province after being convicted of smuggling a popular club drug across the Taiwan Strait.

The executions were carried out after the Supreme People's Court approved their death sentences, officials with the Intermediate Court of Zhangzhou said.

The executions coincide with the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking being observed by United Nations.

The three men were convicted of smuggling hundreds of kilograms of ketamine, a drug popular in Taiwan's nightclubs, from Fujian to Taiwan by boat from 2009 to 2010.

They were arrested in Fujian during drug transactions.

Chen and Xu were sentenced to death in December 2010, while Wang, in a separate case, was sentenced to death in April 2011.

All three had appealed the verdicts, but the Zhangzhou court upheld the original sentences. Drug trafficking is a capital offense in China.

In 2009, Beijing and Taipei signed an agreement to cooperate on combating cross-Strait crimes.

By early 2012, police had jointly busted 10 drug rings operating across the Taiwan Strait and arrested 110 suspects, including 39 Taiwanese.

More than 1.4 tonnes of drugs had been seized, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Chinese Minister of Public Security Meng Jianzhu said today that 9.22 lakh Chinese people were sent for compulsory isolation for drug rehabilitation over the past four years.

Meng issued a report on China's drug control situation at a bimonthly legislative session.

Of the total number of people who underwent rehabilitation therapy, 6.41 lakh drug managed to kick the habit after three years treatment, he said.

The government has helped more than 40,000 drug addicts who recovered from the habit to return to society following rehabilitation through various programs, including employment assistance programs, Meng said.

Meng also released an official report stating that the 'Golden Triangle', which overlaps the mountains of Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand is still the most harmful source of drugs in China.

Chinese police seized 5.1 tonnes of heroin and 7.9 tonnes of methamphetamine produced in, and smuggled from, the region last year, which made up 72 per cent and 55 per cent of the total nationwide seizures of heroin and methamphetamine, respectively.

The seizures marked the increase of 55 per cent and 62 per cent year on year, according to the report.

Police also uncovered 223 drug smuggling cases originating in the Golden Crescent area, another major Asian region for illicit opium production, in 2011, up nearly 30 per cent, it said.

The Golden Crescent is located at the crossroads of Central, South and Western Asia, and includes Afghanistan, the world's largest opium producer, the report said.

It noted that the task of tackling drug trafficking has become increasingly arduous, as more cocaine from South America and methamphetamine from Northeast Asia have been smuggled into China.

Beijing Lawyer Denounces Execution for Organs at Hospital

A Beijing lawyer has denounced the execution of a death row prisoner at a hospital, saying that it was done for the convenience of simultaneously harvesting the organs.

Lawyer Han Bing from the Beijing H & J Law Firm, who represents the family of the executed man, posted a message on Sina Weibo, China’s Twitter-like microblogging service on Dec. 6.

It said: “This morning witnessed a horrifying practice of execution. The Supreme Court this week contacted the Provincial High Court to re-examine a determined death penalty case. However, the Intermediate People’s Court had the prisoner promptly executed without notifying the relatives for a last farewell visit. The reason for the prompt execution was that the death penalty prisoner had ‘willingly’ signed an organ donation release. To ensure the quality of the organs, the execution was carried out at the hospital. These judges and doctors without conscience turn a hospital into a place of execution and a market for organ trading!”

In response to anticipated queries, Han wrote: “My thanks to netizens and the media for your great concern in this matter. I am in charge of this case, but the situation has come about suddenly and unexpectedly. On behalf of the relatives, we will inquire with the Supreme Court regarding the execution as soon as the funeral arrangements are completed. No further details can be revealed now. Thank you for your understanding!”

Han’s Weibo message was reposted and commented on nearly 24,000 times by 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 7 EST. It had been deleted by Dec. 9.

digg88, a Shenzhen netizen, who works for the software company Kingdee, said on Weibo, “The rule to buy and sell organs from death row prisoners has been here for many years according to a friend of mine who used to work in the court system.”

Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting, a Washington-based nonprofit group, made a recent statement on the Chinese regime’s plan to phase out organ harvesting from executed prisoners. “DAFOH is concerned that the announced changes are primarily aimed at appeasing the international community, while the unethical organ transplant abuses will continue in secret.”

“After years of denying its use of executed prisoners as the source for transplant organs, China has since admitted this unethical practice. However, it has not yet admitted to its use of organs from detained prisoners of conscience. Without disclosing the true extent of the source of organs, there is no reason to assume that the harvesting of organs from Falun Gong practitioners will phase out as well,” the statement read.

Dr. Arthur Caplan, head of the Division of Bioethics at New York University’s Langone Medical Center, initiated a petition on the White House’s “We the People” website on Dec. 2, asking the U.S. government to investigate and condemn the Chinese regime’s practice of killing Falun Gong practitioners and prisoners of conscience for their organs.
