One Goh Sentenced to Seven Life Sentences in 2012 CA Slayings of Seven

7 dead in shooting at Oakland university; suspect arrested in Alameda

OAKLAND -- Witnesses described a panicked scene after a shooting suspect opened fire in a classroom at an East Oakland private university Monday morning, killing at least six and wounding several more.

Police would not confirm the total number of casualties from the shooting at Oikos University on Edgewater Drive, but said that a suspect had been arrested at Alameda's South Shore Center.

A witness to the suspect's arrest, outside Safeway, said he was calm as police took him into custody. Lisa Resler, 41, said she was leaving the Alameda store with her daughter when she saw a young Asian man with a beanie being confronted by store security. She described him as being "very sedated" as he was handcuffed.

After the shooting, which erupted at 10:23 a.m., people fled the building, located in business park area near the Oakland airport.

Some of the wounded were treated at the scene by emergency crews, others taken away by ambulances and at least four of the dead were covered with tarps on a grassy area near the school. Other students and staff of the school were evacuated by SWAT officers from the building at 7850 Edgewater Drive after the shooting.

Some witnesses outside the school when it happened said that a victim who had fled the building told them the shooter was in the classroom, stood up and shot another student in the chest, and then opened fire on the rest of the classroom.

Students and teachers throughout the building heard the shots, said Lucas Garcia, who has taught English at Oikos for three years.

"We heard many gunshots," he said. "Everybody was scared, obviously."
Students panicked and ran from the building when the shooting started, said Nam Gong Kyun, a 52-year-old English student from Korea.

The school offers degrees in religious, musical and nursing fields, according to its website.

Pastor Jong Kim, who founded the school about 10 years ago, said the shooter had previously been a nursing student at Oikos but was no longer enrolled. He was unsure whether the shooter had been expelled or dropped out voluntarily.

Kim did not see the shooting but heard about 30 gunshots. "I stayed in my office," he said, imitating the sound of rapid shots.

A man who requested anonymity who works in information technology for the Superior Court of California, with offices just across from the shooting scene, said, "A few people inside (our building) heard shots, and then there was a huge crowd outside."

Police: Shooting suspect felt picked on, planned attack

The man suspected of killing seven people at a Christian college in Oakland felt picked on by other students because his English skills were limited and had planned the attack for several weeks, police said Tuesday.

One Goh, 43, of Oakland told police that he "came here with the intent of locating an administrator," months after he had been expelled for behavioral problems, Police Chief Howard Jordan said at a news conference outside Oikos University, the site of Monday's shooting, one of the deadliest campus attacks in California history.

But the woman, whose name wasn't released, wasn't there at the time, and "he then went through the entire building, systematically and randomly shooting the victims," carrying out a rampage had had planned several weeks earlier, the chief said.

Among the seven killed were six women - including a secretary who police say was taken as a hostage by Goh near the front of the school early on - and a man. The dead were from several countries, including Korea, Nigeria, Nepal and the Philippines and ranged in age from 21 to 40, Jordan said.

"This is a multi-lingual school that caters to many students from foreign countries," the chief said.

Officials have not released the names of the victims. But among the dead is Katleen Ping, 24, according to her family.

There were 35 people at the school at 7850 Edgewater Drive at the time, Jordan said.

With the exception of the secretary, the others who were killed were all students, Jordan said.

Goh had been upset at the administrator as well as several students "because of the way he was treated when he was enrolled here a few months ago," said the chief, adding the suspect may have been expelled from the school "for his behavioral problems" and for issues relating to "anger management."

Goh had also felt picked on and made fun of by other students because his English skills were limited, the chief said.

After the shooting, Goh stole a Honda Accord belonging to one of the shooting victims and drove several miles to a Safeway store in Alameda, where he allegedly told employees at the customer service desk, "I just shot some people."

Jordan said it was unclear why Goh had gone to Alameda.

Jordan also corrected a previous statement he had made Monday about the gun being recovered. The weapon has not been found, and police are still looking for it, he said. Sources have said the shooter was armed with a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun.

The suspect has willingly spoken to investigators, Jordan said.

"He's been very cooperative with us," the chief said. "He has not been particularly remorseful, but very cooperative."

Jail records show that the 5-foot-7, 220-pound Goh was booked at 5 a.m. Tuesday at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. He is being held without bail on suspicion of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, carjacking. He is to be arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court in Oakland on Wednesday pending the filing of formal charges by prosecutors.

Because numerous victims were killed, prosecutors could charge him with the special circumstance of committing multiple murder, which would make him eligible for the death penalty if convicted. Prosecutors will decide later whether to seek lethal injection.

7 Murder Charges Filed Against Alleged Oakland Shooter One Goh; Jordan Says Program Director Was Target

Prosecutors have filed seven murder charges against the man accused of a fatal shooting rampage at a California Christian college.

Forty-three-year-old One Goh also was charged Wednesday with three counts of attempted murder.

He also faces a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders that could make him eligible for the death penalty.

Goh surrendered to authorities Monday, an hour after the attack at Oikos University that left seven dead and three others wounded.

Police say in court documents that Goh admitted to bringing a .45-caliber handgun to Oikos and four magazines of ammunition. The documents say he acknowledged shooting several people before fleeing.

Goh is scheduled to make his first appearance in Alameda County Superior Court later Monday.

Also on Wednesday, police confirmed that the nursing program director of Oikos was the suspect's intended target.

Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan told The Associated Press that investigators believe Ellen Cervellon was the person sought by suspect One Goh.

Police said that when Goh was told Cervellon wasn't there at the time, he began shooting in classrooms.

Goh had been upset after dropping out of the nursing program because school officials would not fully refund his tuition, Cervellon said.

Cervellon told the AP that she believes she was the intended target but was teaching elsewhere that morning.

Goh dropped out of the nursing program at Oikos University around November, but came back to campus numerous times to ask her for a full tuition refund, she said.

Goh got angry when she told him the school could not refund all his money because he had been enrolled for nearly half of the program, she said.

"In talking to several of the students and faculty who were there, I think he was looking for me. I have that weight on my shoulders and I don't know what to do with it," she told The Associated Press, her voice quavering with emotion. "Every single one of those students were going to be an excellent, excellent nurse. They're in my heart and they always will be."

Cervellon said she was not on campus that morning because she was doing her other job, teaching nursing to students at California State University, East Bay.

Former nursing student pleads not guilty in Oakland shooting rampage

April 30 (Reuters) - A former nursing student
accused of killing seven people and wounding three others in a
shooting rampage at a tiny Christian college in Oakland pleaded
not guilty on Monday to murder and attempted murder charges.

Accused gunman One Goh, a Korean-American who appeared in
court shackled at the hands and feet and wearing red jail garb
and sandals, is charged with seven counts of first degree
murder, with special circumstances that make him eligible for
    the death penalty.

Goh, who entered the plea in Alameda County Superior Court
through a Korean interpreter, also faces three counts of
attempted murder linked to the April 2 shootings.

The April 2 shooting spree at Oikos University was the
deadliest at an American college since 2007, when a Virginia
Tech University student killed 32 people and wounded 25 others.

Prosecutors have not yet decided whether they will seek the death penalty.

Oikos shooting suspect to be treated at Napa State Hospital

A judge today ordered the man accused of murdering seven people in a shooting rampage at Oakland’s Oikos University last April to be treated at the Napa State Hospital in a bid to restore his mental competency to stand trial.

Alameda County Superior Court Judge Carrie Panetta said that based on reports by two psychiatrists who have examined 44-year-old One Goh she “had no other choice but to find him mentally incompetent to stand trial” and suspended legal proceedings against him at a previous hearing three weeks ago.

Panetta said the goal of the treatment for Goh at the Napa State Hospital will be to “progress toward the recovery of his mental competence” so he eventually can stand trial.

Goh, a Korean national who lived in Oakland, currently is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on seven counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder for allegedly shooting three victims who survived and 10 special-circumstance allegations, including committing murder during a carjacking. Police said that Goh fled the campus after the April 2 shootings in a car belonging to one of the victims.

He was arrested in Alameda a short time later after he confessed to a Safeway security guard that he had just shot several people, according to police.

Panetta ordered Napa State Hospital officials to administer anti-psychotic medication to Goh involuntarily if he refuses such medication and doctors rule that taking such medication would be in his own best interest.

Goh’s lawyer, David Klaus, said Goh “has not been taking good care of himself” and has lost about 60 pounds while he’s been in custody.

Goh “is quite skinny and gaunt now” and “has little insight into his situation,” Klaus said.

Panetta ordered Goh to return to court on April 29 for a progress report on his treatment and also set a hearing for Feb. 11 to make sure he’s been transferred from Santa Rita to the Napa State Hospital because sometimes it takes a long time for authorities to transfer inmates to the mental institution.

Goh is a former student who had left Oikos University voluntarily. Prosecutors have said he appears to have wanted a refund of his tuition, and may have been targeting an administrator who was not present the day of the shooting.

According to a probable cause statement filed in court by Oakland police Officer Robert Trevino, Goh has admitted that he carried out the shootings.

Those killed were students Lydia Sim, 21, Sonam Choedon, 33, Grace Kim, 23, Doris Chibuko, 40, Judith Seymour, 53, and Tshering Bhutia, 38, and Katleen Ping, 24, who worked at the school.

In addition to the murder and attempted murder charges, Goh faces 10 special-circumstance allegations that could result in the death penalty if he’s convicted.

Seven of those allegations are for committing multiple murders and one each are for committing a murder during a robbery, murder during a carjacking and murder during a kidnapping.

Some family members of the victims in the case have said they think Goh had to be mentally competent in order to plan and carry out the shooting and have alleged that he is taking advantage of the legal system.

But Klaus said Goh isn’t avoiding responsibility and most defendants who initially are found to be incompetent to stand trial eventually are restored to competency and prosecuted.

Oakland university mass shooter still suffering from mental condition, doctors say

The 44-year-old man accused of killing seven people during a mass shooting at a small East Oakland private college remains troubled by delusional thoughts and cannot comprehend the charges filed against him, attorneys said in court Monday.

One Goh remains at Napa State Hospital where he is undergoing counseling and voluntarily taking perphenazine, an antipsychotic drug used to treat psychosis, Goh's attorney Assistant Public Defender David Klaus said.

Goh will remain at Napa State Hospital until doctors determine he is mentally fit to stand trial. A new progress report on his mental status will be presented to the court in December.

Goh could face the death penalty for the alleged mass shooting last year in which he is accused if using a .45-caliber handgun to kill six Oikos University students and a receptionist because the school refused to refund his tuition.

The shooting occurred on April 2, 2012, when Goh walked into the school on Edgewater Drive and began shooting.
