Investigation Discovery Announces 12 New Original Series Including 'Wives With Knives'

Investigation Discovery enters the 2012-13 upfront season with another record year of success, maintaining its title as the fastest-growing network in television1 and capitalizing on that momentum with the largest slate of original programming in network history.

ID just closed its best quarter ever, delivering record numbers in all key demos in prime, including P2+ (+21% to 677k), W25-54 (+35% to 216k), and W18-49 (+45% to 185k). In addition, the network remains the #1 network in ad-supported cable and broadcast for length of tune in prime (24 minutes vs. 15 min television average) and total day (41 min vs. 20 min television average.)2

In addition, year to date, ID ranks #4 in daytime delivery of W25-544, out-performing much larger networks distributed in an additional 20 million homes.

“At just four years old, Investigation Discovery has officially become a major player in the competition for female viewers,” said Henry Schleiff, president and general manager of Investigation Discovery, Military Channel and Destination America. “Last year, we predicted that ID would become a top ten network for women, and we’ve already far surpassed that goal in daytime. Now, armed with an enormous slate of new and returning series reflecting the real-life drama that our female audiences crave, we are poised for our best year ever as ID quickly becomes the #1 guilty pleasure for women.”

Leading into the upfront, ID will launch a new slate of original series, headlined by the July debut of EVIL TWINS, challenging viewers to decipher which twin has taken sibling rivalry to the next level; the August premiere of REDRUM, in which a case is solved in reverse; and DEADLY AFFAIRS, starring the incomparable queen of daytime soaps, Susan Lucci.

    SUMMER SERIES LAUNCHES

    EVIL TWINS

There’s something oddly fascinating about twins. Maybe it’s the secret languages they create, their identical façade, or the claim that one can feel when the other is hurt. But when one twin turns bad, does the other stay pure of heart? Channeling sibling rivalries and deadly childhood pacts, EVIL TWINS follows true-crime mysteries surrounding real-life cases of these evil archetypes. Each episode reveals shocking stories of twins on the edge, from sleeping with their sibling’s husband then setting them up for murder to stealing their identity and even coming back from the dead.

    REDRUM

When it comes to murder, no detective starts their search at the beginning of the crime. Rather, a murder investigation always begins with the body, after the deed is done. It is up to the police to piece together the story, moving backwards in time until they arrive at the root of the crime. In ID’s new series REDRUM, viewers follow the backwards tale of murder from false motives and mistaken witnesses to conversations taken completely out of context, until the truth finally comes out at the very end.

    DEADLY AFFAIRS

From love triangles that implode to office romances exposed; from sleeping with the enemy to bedding your best friend’s husband; and from grooms ditching the ceremony with a bridesmaid in tow to swingers deciding the grass actually is greener; stories of passionate love affairs turned crimes of passion aren’t just happening on daytime television. Hosted by soap opera legend Susan Lucci, DEADLY AFFAIRS proves that they happen in real life and, sometimes, are even stranger than fiction.

There's no shortage of these tempestuous DEADLY WOMEN in season six of Investigation Discovery's signature hit series about women who have been driven to kill. Jealousy, revenge, desperation, and greed all play their devilish hand in driving these daughters, sisters, mothers, and wives to commit the ultimate sin. While male murderers are often motivated by anger, impulse, and destruction, women usually have more complex, long-term motives. Former F.B.I. criminal profiler Candice DeLong helps viewers distinguish between the emotionally-charged impulses and sociopathic intentions that lace each story. The sixth season of DEADLY WOMEN premieres Friday, August 17 at 10 PM E/P.

Investigation Discovery's Killer New Crop of Original Series

Fast-growing network Investigation Discovery is ramping up its commitment to guilty-pleasure crime-themed programming. The network is set to announce that it will add 15 new series to its 22 returning series next season, including previously announced shows hosted by Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum Charisma Carpenter and NBC News anchor Tamron Hall.

New shows include Southern Fried Homicide, about crime south of the Mason-Dixon Line, hosted by actress Shanna Forrestall; Darkness Out of Town, which chronicles murder that takes place in the countryside; The First Kill, about initial murders that inspired killing sprees; and The Bad Old Days, about real-life killings from the 1950s and 1960s.

Also on the docket: Imposters, about criminals and schemers who have conned their way into wealth through deceit; A Stranger in My Home, about forming relationships with people who turn out to be criminals; Beauty Queen Murders, which is exactly what it sounds like; Evil-in-Law, which looks at mother-in-laws who overstep their bounds; and Fear Thy Neighbor, stories of what happens when the guy down the street turns out to be a psycho.

Among the previously announced series, Carpenter's show, Surviving Evil, looks at stories of women who fought their attackers and survived. (Carpenter herself survived a violent crime in San Diego in 1991). Hall hosts Deadline: Crime with Tamron Hall, an original newsmagazine about crime investigation. Jerry Springer hosts Tabloid, a look at bizarre larger-than-life stories. And Elder Skelter recounts senior citizens who have committed crimes.

Returning ID shows include On the Case with Paula Zahn, Redrum, Wives with Knives, On Death Row, Frenemies: Loyalty Turned Lethal and Who The (Bleep) Did I Marry?

"Other networks might dabble in our programming genre, but our signature storytelling and the volume of original productions have made ID a major entertainment destination, especially for women," says Investigation Discovery president and general manager Henry Schleiff (who also oversees Discovery's Military Channel and Destination America).

When this channel first came out, it was all I watched it seemed. Now, I DVR the two Candace DeLong shows: Deadly Women and Facing Evil. Other than that it just seems like the same thing over and over. Besides, I refuse to watch a show with "BFF" in the title.

Some shows are stupid and way over the top but my faves are I (almost) Got Away With It and Fatal Encounters.

The last episode on FE was about "beaner hopping" on Long Island. I had no idea such a thing existed!

There's a new show on there called "Double Cross". The premiere was about a very rich prominent doctor lady in Arkansas who trusted a dumb scumbag to launder some money and got KILLED in the process!

Throughout the show you are thinking WHY would a rich and successful doctor trust the dregs of society and engage in money laundering??

Her name was Rebbeca Johnson from Ozark, AR.

Investigation Discovery to Present World Premiere Docu-Series KILLING RICHARD GLOSSIP, 3/5

For almost twenty years, two men convicted of murder one on death row, and the other sentenced to life without parole maintain two very different accounts of what led to the slaying of Barry Van Treese on January 7, 1997, at the Best Budget Inn in Oklahoma City. Richard Glossip, a man with no prior felony convictions, has consistently maintained his innocence, insisting that he had no knowledge that anyone planned to kill Van Treese. Justin Sneed, who admitted to killing the victim and whose fingerprints were found in the room, cut a deal for a life sentence instead of risking the death penalty by telling the police that Glossip hired him to do it. Now, with cameras following Glossip's case during what could be the final days of his life, KILLING RICHARD GLOSSIP tells this haunting story that of a former motel manager sentenced to die for orchestrating a murder that he swears he had nothing to do with. KILLING RICHARD GLOSSIP, a world premiere two-night event, kicks off Sunday, March 5 at 9/8c exclusively on ID.

Is the state of Oklahoma about to execute an innocent man? That chilling question is at the heart of this all-new real-time documentary series, created and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Joe Berlinger, who has dedicated his career to exposing abuses in the criminal justice system. Berlinger's Academy Award - nominated, Peabody-and Emmy -winning Paradise Lost trilogy of documentaries famously helped lead to the release of one man from DEATH ROW and two others from life in prison. Every second counts as Glossip sits on DEATH ROW awaiting execution, and now Berlinger's cameras are there with exclusive access to capture each moment as the clock ticks down. With support growing worldwide for Glossip, the docu-series also features interviews with high-profile supporters, including Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon, billionaire entrepreneur and social activist Richard Branson, and anti-death penalty activist and author Sister Helen Prejean (Dead Man Walking) who, at the eleventh hour, heroically pursued attorneys Don Knight and Mark Olive, convincing them to devote their time to the Glossip case pro-bono.

Van Treese's body was found beaten and bloody on the floor of a room of the Oklahoma City motel that he owned, and that was managed by Glossip. But there are no DNA nor fingerprints from Glossip at the crime scene that tie him to his boss' murder. Instead, Glossip's death sentence is based primarily on the testimony of Justin Sneed, the motel maintenance man who was convicted of Van Treese's murder and sentenced to life without parole. While Sneed admitted to killing Van Treese, he claims he did so under pressure from Glossip and for promise of payment. Before his two trials, the state of Oklahoma offered Glossip plea deals that would save his life, each of which he rejected, insisting upon his innocence.

Today, Glossip spends 23 hours a day, as he has for the past 20 years, fighting for his life from a tiny UNDERGROUND cell on death row, while Sneed is serving a life sentence at a medium security prison in Oklahoma. In 2015, Glossip was served his last meal on three separate occasions, only for Sister Helen Prejean, the United States Supreme Court, the work of his attorneys, and fate to intervene in each instance, staving off execution. During the state's third attempt at killing Richard Glossip, Glossip paced back and forth in a cold cell wearing nothing but boxer shorts for 45 minutes after the time for his scheduled execution, only for the execution to be halted due to a lack of approved execution drugs. The state's investigation into this BOTCHED execution attempt led to a moratorium on executions in Oklahoma. Once the details of a new protocol have been decided, Glossip will face a new execution date, which could come as early as this summer. As Glossip continues to skirt the edge of execution, Berlinger's cameras are embedded with his legal team in real-time as the team races against the clock to uncover new evidence that proves his innocence.

"Nine out of ten times, the American justice system gets it right. Sadly, it's the unpredictability of that one time it goes astray that has resulted in a staggering amount of people who claim their innocence as they sit on death row," said Henry Schleiff, Group President, Investigation Discovery, AMERICAN HEROES CHANNEL and Destination America. "There is a growing consensus of people worldwide that believe Richard Glossip is innocent. Consequently, this convergence of forces including the support of filmmaker Joe Berlinger who is no stranger to reporting on flaws in the criminal justice system is why our team at ID feels it's imperative to provide a platform for the public to hear all sides of the story."

"Even if you think Richard Glossip might be guilty, his three separate trips to the execution chamber is reason enough to deeply question the sanity of the death penalty," said Berlinger. "But when you add to the mix that the case for his innocence is so compelling, then Richard Glossip's cruel odyssey through the justice system is a wake-up call for how broken capital punishment is in this country."

The series features unprecedented access to the unfolding re-investigation of Glossip's case, including exclusive interviews with Glossip and Sneed, as well asthe first-ever interviews with the lead detectives and attorneys on both sides of the case. KILLING RICHARD GLOSSIPtraces Glossip's terrifying journey through the criminal justice system, his harrowing brushes with death, and what may be his last chance at freedom for a crime he swears he did not commit.
