Terrified woman 'forced to watch as human trafficking gang tortured, dismembered and beheaded teenage girl in front of her'
A teenager was tortured and cut up in front of another woman so she would be frightened into cooperating with a human trafficking ring, police said.

Jimmy Lee Massey, 33, was arrested over the first-degree murder of Carina Saunders, 19, whose dismembered body was found stuffed in a duffel bag. The young woman had been beheaded and dumped on October 13 behind a grocery store.

A 20-year-old woman came forward as a witness to say she had been kidnapped by Massey and forced to watch Miss Saunders painful death in Bethany, Oklahoma. Her identity has not been released because of concerns for her safety.

Miss Saunders was known to use drugs but not thought to be involved in criminal activity. The choice of her was 'random', according to police.

Massey was already being held in the Oklahoma County jail on drug charges and he remains held without bond. Court documents do not list an attorney for him, Police Chief Phil Cole said.

A second man, 31-year-old Francisco Gomez was also arrested in connection with Miss Saunders' murder along with charges of drug trafficking and failure to pay child support.

As he was lead into the police station in handcuffs last night, he told reporters: 'I've got nothing to with no drugs, no murder, no nothing.'

Deputy U.S. Marshall Callen Stephens told News 9: 'Bethany PD announced that Francisco Gomez was a person of interest in the Bethany homicide.

'We surrounded a possible address for Mr Gomez and he surrendered peacefully. He was booked on a trafficking charge.'

Massey has told investigators he kidnapped the 20-year-old woman and forced her to watch others kill Saunders. He also provided details of Saunders' torture, killing and dismemberment and disposal of the body.
Chief Cole said there was no evidence the witness knew Miss Saunders but both women knew Massey separately.

Police said the kidnapping and brutal killing were meant to send a message that the witness and her friends faced the same fate unless they cooperated with a human trafficking and drug ring.

The police chief said: 'Evidence in our investigation has led us to believe that she had been expected to provide certain things to this trafficking group and that she had not been performing to their satisfaction.

'We believe there were other people there and they're now the focus of our investigation.'

Oklahoma County Assistant District Attorney Scott Rowland said a decision on charges would be made in January.

Rowland declined to discuss whether the drug charges that Massey was being held on were related to the killing.

'We're at a delicate point in the case and I want to be really careful about what I say,' he told a news conference.

Chief Cole said there was no evidence that Miss Saunders was involved in criminal activity.

He said: 'Our information right now leads us to believe she was a random choice, as sad as that is.

'She had relationships within these loosely associated people, and I think that she was a victim of opportunity.'

He said investigators met with the young woman's family at the weekend.

He added: 'They are encouraged by this. They're hoping this is just one of many more that will be held to answer for their daughter's murder.'

Miss Saunders, who graduated from Mustang High School last year, was known to use methamphetamine, marijuana and Ecstasy.

Police have been unable to determine whether she had a job or where she was living at the time of her death.

Lawmaker Drafts Bill To Strengthen Human Trafficking Laws In Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY - It's been six months and still no one to answer for the murder of Carina Saunders. Police found the teenager's body in a duffle bag in Bethany on October 13. Her murder first revealed the statewide problem of human trafficking.

Carina Saunders did not prostitute, instead, police believe human traffickers randomly chose her and used her murder to show other young girls in Oklahoma what might happen to them if they do not cooperate.

"I am here to tell you I have never met a woman who admitted that she is out here because she wanted to," Brian Bates said.

Brian Bates, a video activist targeting street prostitution, says he's witnessed several cases of human trafficking both before and after Saunders' murder. Most recently, the video vigilante helped police rescue a 15-year-old girl forced to prostitute.

"It's a perfect example that these traffickers they target girls that are very young, they are very impressionable," Bates said.

After several public cases of human trafficking in Oklahoma, Representative Sally Kern drafted a bill to strengthen the laws.

"Do you think most of them are doing it because they just want to do it? No, they are not. They are doing it because they have been coerced into doing it," Kern said.

Representative Kern explained the new legislation will redefine what is considered human trafficking, prohibit any child from giving consent to prostitute, and will also help prosecutors bring traffickers to justice.

"We need to do more things to protect the victims right now. There are too many loopholes right now that allow the perpetrators to get off," Kern said.

A law some say will keep Carina Saunders' death from being completely in vain.

"Hopefully going forward lots of people can be saved," Kern said.

Oklahoma currently has a "D" grade on a national scale for its human trafficking laws. Kern said this is just one of several bills that need to be passed.

Seasons in Hell: The Brutality of America’s Modern Day Slave Trade

Nineteen-year-old Carina Saunders of Mustang, Oklahoma, was reported missing on September 28 of 2011 though investigators found reports of people seeing her alive and well in early October. On October 13, animal welfare workers looking for feral cats found the decapitated and mutilated body of Carina in a duffel bag behind a grocery store. It is believed the corpse was there several days before the gruesome discovery. Police had to initially look at her tattoos to determine an identity.

Authorities at first focused on a young “Juggalo” named Cody Perez, a violent ex-con who had recently pawned his set of chef’s knives and fled the area. After all, a brutal killing by a fan of the band Insane Clown Posse would just be another crime in a long list of sensational stories involving the group. But police cleared Perez after a nine week investigation with dozens of witnesses uncovered a crime that seemed to come straight out of a horror movie by a group of criminals most Americans thought were long extinct — slavers. We use the term “human traffickers” now, which sounds much more modern and urbane — as if the victims are willing cargo on some underground railroad. But the reality is that America’s modern day slave trade is as barbaric and brutal as slavery was before emancipation.

During the investigation into Carina’s death, a 20-year-old woman — who by some accounts may be a prostitute or a madam — came forward to tell a tale so horrific that most would discount it as fantasy if not for the confessions that followed. She related how a drug dealer named Jimmy Lee Massey with ties to a gang that sold both drugs and slaves kidnapped her from a residence and took her to an abandoned building. There he restrained her while a still undisclosed number of people, including a man named Francisco Gomez, tortured and murdered Carina Saunders. The witness, who police are not naming because of what they perceive as very real threats to her life, reported that Massey forced her to watch the entire murder as a message to her and other women of what would happen to those who didn’t cooperate with the gang.

Massey, sitting in jail for narcotics charges when confronted with this evidence, confessed to the whole thing.

A press conference held by Police Chief Phil Cole revealed even more disturbing details. The criminal organization Massey and Gomez were involved with has several Mexican nationals as members, indicating a transnational connection. The investigation led to multiple arrests for various crimes, but police have yet to apprehend everyone they know is involved in the gang. But most disturbing of all was the fact that Carina was simply a victim of opportunity.

The witness didn’t know Carina, although both women knew Massey causally. Carina was known to be a drug user – including hard drugs like meth and coke — but police say she wasn’t otherwise involved in any criminal activity. Since Massey was a dealer, it’s likely he kidnapped her while she was buying; she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It is a story as horrific as it is common. These gangs lurk in the shadows of our cities, using the drug trade to help run the more lucrative and dangerous sex slave rings that are ubiquitous in any major metro area. Often the dealers recruit victims after hooking them on hard drugs, but it is far more common that known drug routes are used to transport illegal aliens into the country. Those illegals are billed exorbitant amounts for the trip which they can never hope to pay off and are given the option of “working” off their debts. For women and children, this means forced prostitution; for men, it is sometimes literal slave labor.

In Oklahoma, there are whispers that this gang is responsible for more than just Carina Saunders’ death. Nineteen-year-old Kelsey Bransby was found murdered on October 27. She had attended the same high school as Carina and had similar drug problems, but friends say she had gotten clean and was trying to leave that life behind. After that decision she was shot in the face in her own apartment.

Seventeen-year-old Alina Fitzpatrick’s nude body was found dumped on a rural Oklahoma City property. Alina had been home schooled because of bullying, and had complained prior to her disappearance that a “suspicious” man had been following her and had somehow gotten her cell phone number. The last person to see her alive was a friend who had given her a ride to an apartment that Alina was vague about who lived there. Pretty and blonde, Alina looked much younger than she was and some speculate she was targeted by traffickers.

Oklahoma, however, is not the only place where modern day slavers kidnap and pimp out women and children.

Forty-one-year-old Maurice Lerome Smith was just sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for pimping out a 17-year-old girl on Craigslist in the San Diego area [10]. Smith promised the girl a job at a window washing company but then forced her into prostitution and set her nightly quota at $1,200. He had previously spent time in prison for trying to kidnap and prostitute a 13-year-old girl.

Twenty-four-year-old Walter Woods forced a mentally disabled 18-year-old into prostitution in Kent, Washington. He had a previous record of “luring children” and according to his victim, Woods had several girls that worked for him but they were now “with another pimp,” meaning he sold them.

A woman named Satoria Youngblood was found in Flint, Michigan, pimping out teens and in possession of child pornography. She had been busted in Utah for the same charges just months before being caught in Michigan. She and her associates are believed to travel the country exploiting children for sex, using drugs and violence as leverage.

At Occupy New Hampshire, a woman named Justina Jensen picked up a 16-year-old runaway and began selling the girl online. When she was arrested it was announced that Jensen had faced similar charges in her native New York.

In St. Louis, sex slavers used an Obama-themed social club as cover for a drugs and prostitution ring that included at least one 15-year-old girl.

In Greenville, SC, a gang began terrorizing “independent” escorts in a bid to force the women to work for them.

One thing that’s missed in many of these lurid stories is that prior to being caught, many of these modern day slave traders have forced women and children to have sex with dozens, sometimes hundreds, of men. Men who know these women aren’t willing, men who know these children are being robbed of their innocence. But they purchase them, and rape them, and move on without a care in the world.

That cold indifference to the plight of these women and children — these modern day slaves — is what makes this exploitation possible. It is not just the depravity of Jimmy Massey, Francisco Gomez, and their gang that murdered Carina Saunders; the apathy of the American public was an accessory in this crime. Heedless of the brutality in our midst, we float aimlessly through our vices, gulping down the “terrific mouthfuls of poison” Rimbaud wrote of in Night in Hell. We condemn thousands to season after season in Hell lest we confront our own demons and be forced to answer for our sins.

Attorney: Witness In Carina Saunders' Murder May Have Given False Information

OKLAHOMA CITY - Blindfolded and kidnapped, a witness claims murderers forced her to watch the brutal killing of Carina Saunders. We first told you police found Saunders' body in a duffle bag in Bethany back in October, 2011.

Since that witness talked with police, News 9 is learning the witness is changing her story.

It's been seven months since the murder, but this case is far from going cold. The Bethany Police Chief can only tell us an investigator is working full time to chase down leads in this case.

At the same time, we're uncovering some new information about the key witness in the case and a possible murder weapon.

The murder of Carina Saunders and several details of her violent death remain a mystery, but at this stage in the investigation, a source told News 9 police are actively looking for a machete.

In a field in Bethany, police discovered Saunders' dismembered body in a duffle bag. Her injuries were so horrific the medical examiner decided to seal the autopsy report.

"One young woman has been found dead, chopped up, so she has every right to be fearful," David Slane said.

Slane is referring to his client, a key witness in the case who claims Jimmy Massey abducted and forced her to watch the torture and killing of Carina Saunders.

Massey is one of four people arrested in connection to the murder. Court documents do not reveal any more of the information provided by the witness. News 9 is learning some of it is false.

"Some of it may have been second hand and not from personal knowledge," Slane said.

Slane said the inaccurate statements could take the investigation in a different direction.

News 9 is learning additional witnesses to the murder are being considered in the investigation.

"Some of it she may have just been repeating, and not wanting to tell who told her. In other words she may have been protecting other witnesses and you say that many time on cases like this," Slane said.

We asked prosecutors if the witness statements would affect the case, but they are staying tight-lipped until the investigation is complete.

Murder charges in metro teen's death could come this week
Carina Saunders' dismembered body found inside duffel bag

BETHANY - There is a possible break in the case of a slain metro teenager.

Investigators found 19-year-old Carina Saunders' dismembered body inside a duffel bag in October. Murder charges could be filed this week against several men who investigators think are connected to the death of the Bethany teen.

A city worker found Saunders' body behind a Bethany grocery store. Police said she may have been the victim of human traffickers. After months of building a case the district attorney is now going forward with charges, according to Tony Coleman, Alejandro Rojas' attorney.

"He assured me that within the next 10 days, he will let us know who will be charged with the murder," said Coleman.

Coleman said Rojas and up to five other men could face murder charges.

Man Accused of Murdering Teenage Girl Is Former School Teacher

A man says his brother, who is accused of killing a 19-year-old girl from Bethany, Okla., worked as an elementary school teacher before selling drugs.

Luis Ruiz, who was arrested Thursday, is accused of murdering 19-year-old Carina Saunders, whose dismembered body was found in a duffel bag behind a grocery store in Bethany, Okla., in October 2011.

Twenty-year-old Jorge Ruiz says his brother, Luis Ruiz, 37, used to teach at Columbus Enterprise Elementary in southwest Oklahoma City.

“I’m not sure which grade he taught,” said Jorge Ruiz, according to ABC News affiliate KOCO. “This was a long time ago. I was in like, fifth grade.

“It’s pretty crazy; It’s kind of shocking. I feel sad. I want to believe that he didn’t do it. I still think he’s innocent, in my eyes,” Jorge Ruiz said.

“I feel bad for the parents of (Carina Saunders),” he added. “They’re going through a lot.”

Luis Ruiz has been arrested several times for drug-related charges.

In 2010, Luis Ruiz was arrested for having possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute, court documents confirmed.

“He’s been kind of a drifter,” Jorge Ruiz said, according to KOCO. “He just comes and goes. My whole family hasn’t seen him in a while. He’s been a drifter and a loner. He has a drug problem and definitely got mixed up with the wrong crowd selling drugs.”

According to News 9, police believe Ruiz allegedly murdered Saunders, possibly to scare witnesses so they would cooperate with a drug and human trafficking ring Ruiz was allegedly involved in.

Police believe video of Carina Saunders' killing exists
Bethany officers searched SE Oklahoma City motel

BETHANY, Okla. - Bethany police searched a southeast Oklahoma City motel for a video they say is evidence of the murder and torture of Carina Saunders.
That's according to a search affidavit filed in Oklahoma County District Court on Tuesday.

In the warrant, investigators said they have talked to more than 80 witnesses and followed up on hundreds of leads in the case. Police said sources have told them there is video of the 19-year-old being tortured and murdered, but police have yet to confirm the existence of the video.

Police said they located a woman they believe may have possession of the video. That woman led police to a motel room at the Studio 6 motel, located at 3850 S. Prospect Ave., where detectives made contact with another individual.

The return inventory of a search warrant requested for the property showed police seized two cameras, a zip drive, four cellphones, an SD memory card, a Toshiba laptop computer, meth and drug paraphernalia.

Officers arrested Luis Ruiz on July 5 in connection with Saunders' killing. Five other men have also been arrested but have yet to be charged in the case.

Exclusive: Carina Saunders' Father Opens Up To News 9

OKLAHOMA CITY - In an exclusive interview, Carina Saunders' father, Richard, talks to News 9 after months of staying silent.

Tuesday marked what would have been the 20th birthday of Carina Saunders. Richard opened up as family members and friends gathered at an Oklahoma City restaurant to celebrate Carina's life.

The Mustang teen's dismembered body was found behind a Bethany grocery store last October. That is where the nightmare for the Saunders family started, and it is still not over.

"I deal with the pain as best I can," Carina's father Richard said.

Richard has yet to give any reaction to the recent arrest in his daughter's murder case. He is also continuing to stay silent on the investigation. But, talking about his daughter's life puts a smile on his face.

"[Carina] was always full of smiles and joy," Richard said. "She was probably one of the most giddy kids you would have ever seen in your life."

Family members and friends did not want to be on camera during the birthday celebration, but Richard says they have all worked hard to make something very special possible.

"Hopefully, this will be something that will help carry on the legacy of Carina Saunders and help somebody in the near future," Richard said.

The Saunders family used the special day to donate $4,000 to the Make A Wish Foundation. The money comes from fundraisers held in Carina's honor.

"[The Saunders family is] going to help other families that are struggling," Kandy Hadley with the foundation said.

Richard says giving back helps with the grieving process.

"To give something like this to somebody who may need it helps," Richard said. "I might come up with something different, and maybe next year we can do this again."

The $4,000 donation will stay right here in Oklahoma. In early July, police arrested Luis Ruiz for Carina's murder. Prosecutors have not yet filed charges against him.

Two men charged in Carina Saunders killing; affidavit details torture

One of the men charged Monday in the killing of Carina Saunders beat her, tied her to a table and tortured her by sawing off her left foot and then trying to cut off her right foot before the saw broke, an affidavit shows a witness told police.

The Oklahoma County district attorney's office filed first-degree murder charges against Luis Enrique Ruiz and Jimmy Lee Massey Jr. in the killing of Saunders, the 19-year-old Mustang woman whose dismembered body was found in a duffel bag in Bethany in October 2011.

Ruiz, 37, and Massey, 33, of Oklahoma City, previously had been identified as suspects in the case and have been in custody in the Oklahoma County jail.

Ruiz planned and carried out the torture killing, according to a probable cause affidavit filed with his charges Monday in Oklahoma County District Court.

In the affidavit, a woman named Michelle Hanshaw told police she went to a house on S Harvey Avenue in Oklahoma City with Saunders and witnessed Ruiz “physically beat Carina Saunders and then tie her up.”

Ruiz then dragged Saunders to an upstairs room and tied her to a small table with rope and twine before using the saw on her feet, Hanshaw told Bethany police investigators.

Hanshaw, according to the probable cause affidavit filed with the murder charge against Massey, “jumped out a window to escape” after witnessing the killing.

Stephanie Howard, Ruiz's girlfriend in October 2011, told investigators that on two occasions she and Ruiz had to “baby-sit” a girl Howard later learned was Carina Saunders, police reported.

Ruiz said Saunders was going to be “dealt with,” Howard told investigators.

Another woman was at the house on S Harvey Avenue with Saunders and Hanshaw, but left soon after, police reported. Tia Downour said she had been told there was a video of the homicide on the phone, and the phone belonged to Ruiz, the affidavit shows.

Downour told investigators she shared a room at the Bel-Aire Hotel with Ruiz in May, and when he went to the bathroom, she viewed the video, police reported.

“Downour said she watched for a few seconds until Saunders began to scream,” Bethany police Lt. JR Jencks wrote in the affidavit.

Downour told investigators she recognized Luis Ruiz “as the person in the video cutting off the foot of Saunders,” the lieutenant wrote.

Preliminary hearing set for 2 men accused of killing Carina Saunders
Jimmy Massey, Luis Ruiz will be in court Jan. 23

OKLAHOMA CITY — A judge issued a continuance for two men accused in the death of a 19-year-old woman.

The preliminary hearing for Jimmy Lee Massey Jr., 34, and Luis Ruiz, 38, has been set for Jan. 23.

The two men were formally charged in July with the death of Carina Saunders, 19, whose body was discovered behind a grocery store in Bethany on Oct. 13, 2011.

An autopsy report revealed Saunders had been decapitated and her body was missing hands and feet. She was identified by dental records.

The report says Saunders was murdered, but does not indicate when she died.

Authorities believe Saunders' slaying was connected to a drug ring, human trafficking and prostitution.
