Edinburgh, TX – A Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state trooper was shot while responding to a car crash on Saturday night.

Officials said that 48-year-old Trooper Moises Sanchez responded to a traffic collision at North 10th Street and Freddy Gonzalez Drive in McAllen just before 9 p.m. on April 6, The Monitor reported.

The driver of one of the vehicles, 24-year-old Victor Alejandro Godinez, fled the scene on foot after the crash.

The trooper caught up with him in the 1500-block of South Maltese and that’s when Godinez opened fire, striking Trooper Sanchez in the head.

He also shot at two Edinburgh police officers before he was apprehended shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Trooper Sanchez was transported to Doctors Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

Edinburg Police Chief Cesar Torres said the trooper remained in critical-but-stable condition on Monday morning, The Monitor reported.

Neither of the other two officers at whom Godinez shot at were injured.

Godinez was also wounded at some point during the melee but Chief Torres said at the press conference that it was unclear whether he was shot by the trooper or the Edinburgh officers, The Monitor reported.

DPS Trooper Sanchez dies after complications from surgery

    By Mark Reagan
    The Monitor

Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Moises Sanchez has died following complications from surgery this week stemming from gunshot wounds he sustained in April.

State Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, D-McAllen, confirmed his death via Facebook Saturday afternoon.

“Today our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Trooper Sanchez who has made the ultimate sacrifice for our families. I also appreciate the healthcare teams that cared for Trooper Sanchez while he fought bravely and courageously these past four months. May he Rest in Peace and be in Heaven. Semper Fi to a former Marine,” Hinojosa said.

Last Thursday, DPS in a Facebook post said that Yvonne Sanchez, the late trooper’s wife, said her husband was scheduled for surgery to replace his bone flap with a reconstructed titanium mesh one.

Over the last few months, DPS reported that Moises Sanchez’s condition was improving as he underwent operations and therapy related to gunshot wounds he sustained to his head and shoulder.

“Saddened to learn of the passing of DPS Trooper Moises Sanchez who was shot twice back in April while responding to a routine traffic accident call in the Edinburg/McAllen area. This is a reminder that our law enforcement men and women risk their lives on a daily basis. There is no routine traffic stop or routine response to a call for help,” he said.

Moises Sanchez had been undergoing treatment since April 6, when authorities say 24-year-old Victor Alejandro Godinez shot the trooper once in the head and once in the shoulder with what police believe is a .357 revolver they recovered near east Mon Mack Road and State Highway 107.

Authorities accuse the man of opening fire after Moises Sanchez responded to a vehicular accident, fleeing the scene and opening fire after the trooper caught up to him in the 1500 block of South Maltese Street in Edinburg.

At some point, authorities say Godinez was also shot, thought it’s unclear which officer shot the suspect.

Godinez is also charged with shooting at Edinburg police officers Sandra Tapia and Jessie Moreno, according the indictment.

Although Godinez, who remains in Hidalgo County jail on a $3 million bond, has since entered not guilty pleas to three counts of attempted capital murder of a peace officer, Sanchez’s death is expected to prompt a grand jury indictment for capital murder.

“At the appropriate time, as soon as we can, we will present to the grand jury a charge of capital murder,” Hidalgo County District Attorney Ricardo Rodriguez said Saturday evening. “On behalf of the DA’s office, and on behalf of the citizens of Hidalgo County, our deepest condolences go out to the family of Trooper Sanchez. We will always keep our law enforcement agencies in our prayers.”

Since Sanchez’s shooting, residents of the Rio Grande Valley and the law enforcement community responded with gestures of support for the family, including vigils, drives and a multitude of sentiment in the form of prayers and well-wishes.

Grand Jury indicts man for capital murder in shooting of state trooper

    By Lorenzo Zazueta-Castro
    The Monitor

A Hidalgo County Grand Jury returned a capital murder indictment on the man who fatally shot a Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper earlier this year, District Attorney Ricardo Rodriguez Jr. confirmed Friday afternoon.

Nearly a month after Trooper Moises Sanchez died following complications from surgery for gunshot wounds, Rodriguez, who declined to provide a comment, or elaborate further, said the jurors handed down the indictment on 24-year-old Victor Alejandro Godinez, late Thursday afternoon.

On the evening of April 6, Godinez, of Edinburg, allegedly opened fire on law enforcement officers in Edinburg, including on Sanchez, after he responded to the original call of a car crash — fleeing the scene and opening fire after the trooper caught up to him in the 1500 block of South Maltese Street.

At some point, authorities say Godinez was also shot, though it’s unclear which officer shot the suspect.

Godinez is also charged with shooting at Edinburg police officers Sandra Tapia and Jessie Moreno, according the indictment.

In June, the grand jury returned three counts of attempted capital murder against Godinez, to which he subsequently pleaded not guilty to in July, court records show.

Prior to Sanchez’s death, over the last few months, DPS officials reported Sanchez’s condition was improving as he underwent operations and therapy related to gunshot wounds he sustained to his head and shoulder.

On Sept. 6, hundreds paid their respects to Sanchez during a ceremony in Edinburg.

Suspect in Trooper Sanchez’s shooting pleads not guilty

    By Lorenzo Zazueta-Castro
    The Monitor

EDINBURG — Victor Alejandro Godinez pleaded not guilty to three charges during a formal arraignment hearing Monday.

Before the hearing got underway Monday, 389th state District Court Judge Letty Lopez appointed Edinburg-based criminal defense attorney O. Rene Flores to represent Godinez. The appointment was made to avoid having to delay the hearing once again after Godinez appeared without an attorney for a second straight week.

During the Sept. 30 arraignment hearing, the court questioned Godinez’s ability to retain an attorney, after Godinez told the court he would speak with his mother about retaining one, and the case was reset for Monday morning.

Godinez, after briefly conferring with Flores, pleaded not guilty to one count of capital murder and two counts of attempted capital murder.

A Hidalgo County grand jury handed down a capital murder indictment last month shortly after Sanchez died Aug. 24 as a result of complications during surgery to treat injuries he suffered during the April shooting.

As is common with capital murder cases, the death penalty remains on the table up to the time of the trial, at which time the state would have to announce to the court how they would proceed.

Godinez is accused of shooting Sanchez, 48, on April 6 after the suspect fled a car crash the trooper responded to on North 10th Street and Freddy Gonzalez Drive in McAllen.

The 24-year-old man is accused of running away after shooting Sanchez once in the head and once in the shoulder.

Sanchez went through intense rehabilitation and multiple surgeries after the shooting.

However, he succumbed to his injuries on Aug. 24, following a surgery in Houston.

Two Edinburg police officers caught up with Godinez in the 1500 block of South Maltese in Edinburg.

He’s also accused of shooting at those officers, who eventually apprehended him east of Mon Mack Road and State Highway 107.

The officers were not hit and police say they recovered a .357 revolver authorities say Godinez used in the shooting.

Godinez was indicted earlier this year on separate attempted capital murder charges related to shooting at the officers, and was represented by Sergio Muñoz. However, after the hearing Monday, the state is expected to ask the court to consolidate those charges into the capital murder case.

Godinez remains jailed on $3 million in bonds and is expected back before the court Dec. 5, for his first pre-trial hearing.

Still no word on whether state will seek death in Godinez case

A man accused of killing a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper last year appeared in court by video-conferencing Wednesday for a pre-trial hearing.

Hidalgo County District Attorney Ricardo Rodriguez said defense attorneys for Victor Godinez, 25, asked state District Judge Letty Lopez for a reset in the case.

    Lopez granted the request.

Godinez is accused of shooting 48-year-old Moises Sanchez on April 6, 2019, after a car crash on North 10th Street and Freddy Gonzalez Drive in McAllen.

Sanchez died in Houston following surgery on Aug. 24, 2019.

Godinez is charged with capital murder of a peace officer.

He could face the death penalty for that charge.

The DA’s office has not announced whether it is seeking the death penalty.

Lopez, the presiding judge in the case, had previously set a March 30 deadline for a death penalty decision.

The COVID-19 pandemic, however, has changed the dynamics of the courts.

Right before that March 30 deadline, Godinez’s attorneys had filed a motion for continuance, citing difficulties meeting with their client because of precautions taken by the county jail to prevent COVID-19 from getting inside, among other arguments.

In that motion, the attorneys said they have had limited opportunities to meet with Godinez.

The man also faces two counts of attempted capital murder of peace officers.

Authorities accuse him of shooting at two Edinburg police officers who were involved in apprehending Godinez after Sanchez was shot.

Police caught Godinez east of Mon Mack Road and State Highway 107.

Man accused of killing DPS trooper to appear in court

    The Monitor Staff Reports

A 25-year-old man charged with capital murder of a peace officer for the death of a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing Wednesday.

Victor Godinez, who is also charged with two counts of attempted capital murder of peace officers, is eligible for the death sentence should he be convicted.

Deadlines for an announcement on whether the Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office will seek the penalty have been pushed back because of COVID-19, according to previous motions filed in the case.

Godinez is accused of shooting 48-year-old Moises Sanchez on April 6, 2019, after the trooper responded to a car crash on North 10th Street and Freddy Gonzalez Drive in McAllen.

Sanchez died several months later on Aug. 24, 2019, in Houston following surgery.

He’s also accused of shooting at two Edinburg police officers who were looking for him after Sanchez was shot.

Authorities caught Godinez east of Mon Mack Road and State Highway 107.
