Mother gets death penalty for burning daughter in Pakistan

An Anti-Terrorism Court in Lahore on Monday sentenced a mother to death for burning her daughter alive in June 2016 after she contracted a 'free-will marriage'.

Zeenat Rafiq, 18, of Lahore's Factory Area was set on fire by her mother Parveen Bibi more than a week after the girl reportedly eloped with Hasan Khan to marry him in a court in Lahore, Dawn reported.

Parveen Bibi confessed she murdered her daughter for "bringing shame to the family".

Pakistan Executes Five 'Terrorists' Convicted by Military Courts

Islamabad: Pakistan on Wednesday executed five "terrorists" convicted by special military courts for carrying out attacks on army and security forces.

The five were hanged in Kohat district jail in Khyber-Pakhtukhwa province, according to a statement by army. Army said the convicted terrorists were involved in attacks on army and other law enforcement personnel and admitted their offences before the magistrate and the trial court.

The execution came in the midst of a debate about reviving the controversial military courts for another two years for speedy trial of terrorists, after a fresh wave of suicide attacks killed over 125 people recently.

The military courts were set up in January 2015 for a two year term after a constitutional amendment following a terror attack on an army-run school in Peshawar in December 2014 that killed over 150 people, mostly students.

Since their expiry in January, government has been trying to bring the political parties around the idea of another tenure for military courts.

Murder convict hanged in Haripur jail

HARIPUR: A murder convict was hanged amid tight security in Haripur central jail on Tuesday. On death row since 2008, Bahadur’s black warrants were issued on March 22.

Authorities said that Amir Bahadur, a resident of Nowshera, had been convicted of murder and had been sentenced to death by a Nowshera district and sessions court in 2008.

Bahadur had challenged his conviction in the Peshawar High Court and later in the Supreme Court. However, both upheld the verdict of the sessions court. Subsequently, his mercy petition was also turned down by the president of Pakistan.

The convict was allowed a last meeting with his family on Monday.

At 5.30 on Tuesday morning, Bahadur was as per court orders, “hanged by neck till death.”

The executioner had been called in from Peshawar Central Jail, as there is no official executioner in the Haripur district. During the execution, Civil Judge Aftab Iqbal, Dr Muhammad Iqbal, Dr Muhammad Ayaz, and Jail Superintendent Abdul Qayum Khan and his subordinate staff was in attendance.

‘Hardcore terrorist’ involved in Bannu jailbreak executed

A ‘hardcore terrorist’ belonging to the banned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) involved in the 2012 Bannu jailbreak, among other attacks was executed in Kohat jail on Thursday, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

“Today another hardcore terrorist, who was involved in committing heinous offences relating to terrorism, including attacks on Bannu Jail and Law Enforcement Agencies has been executed at District Jail Kohat. The convict was tried by military court,” said the statement.

The ISPR said Tahir, son of Shah Jehan, was an active member of the TTP and involved in attacking/breaking of Bannu Jail owing to which a number of terrorists managed to escape from the Jail.

“He was also involved in attacks on Law Enforcement Agencies which resulted in the death of a soldier and injuries to another soldier. He admitted his offences before the Magistrate and the trial court. He was awarded death sentence,” the statement said.

The execution came two days after the Senate approved the 28th constitutional amendment bill, consummating the parliamentary process to revive military courts for another two years.

Nearly 400 prisoners, including militants, escaped from Bannu jail when more than 150 insurgents armed with guns, grenades and rockets stormed the central prison outside the restive northwestern town of Bannu.

The TTP had claimed responsibility for the attack on the jail in which a former member of the airforce, sentenced to death for an attack on former president Pervez Musharraf, also escaped.

    An Islamic preacher, Mohammad Ishaq

Pakistan: An Islamic preacher, Mohammad Ishaq, has been freed from prison after being convicted and sentenced to death for blasphemy. Mohammad was accused by fellow citizen of claiming to be God during a conversation. Under the nation’s blasphemy laws, anyone can be accused and sentenced to death for insulting God, Islam, or religious personalities. Often these claims lack evidence and are misused to settle person disputes.

On Wednesday, March 8, 2017, five individuals were executed by hanging. The five individuals were unnamed. All were convicted of being terrorists.

To the gallows: Murder convict hanged in Dera Ghazi Khan Jail

A convict, facing death penalty in a dual murder case, was hanged in Central Jail, Dera Ghazi Khan, prison officials said. They maintained on June 4, 1995, Huzoor Bakhsh had killed his wife Bharawan Mai and Muhammad Iqbal over suspicion of having illicit relations in Rajanpur.

Later, the police arrested the accused and a case was registered against him. The officials maintained on December 15, 1999, Rajanpur Additional Session Judge Muqarrab Khan awarded death sentence to Huzoor Bakhsh. He filed applications against the decision in the Supreme Court, high court and the President of Pakistan but all appeals were rejected. He had a final meeting with his family members late on Tuesday evening and in early hours of Wednesday Huzoor Bakhsh was taken to the gallows.

Earlier, three convicts on death row were hanged across jails in Punjab. Nabeel Ahmed, Saleem and Rashid were all handed the death sentence for committing murders in 2000 and 1998 respectively.

PHC stops execution of TTP terrorist

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Wednesday stayed the execution of an alleged terrorist who was to be hanged in an internment centre in Kohat today.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Roohul Amin Khan suspended the sentence and stopped the hanging of Said Akbar till May 11. He had been awarded death sentence by a military court on terrorism charges. Said Akbar was an active member of the outlawed militant group Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and hailed from the Swat district.

As per the statement of the military's public affairs wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), issued on July 14 last year, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) had confirmed the death sentence of 12 hardcore terrorists, including the convict Said Akbar.

The ISPR noted that Said Akbar, son of Liber Khan, was an active member of TTP. “He was involved in attacking armed forces of Pakistan, which resulted in injuries and death of soldiers. He was also in possession of explosives. He admitted his offenses before the magistrate and trial court. He was tried on two charges and awarded death sentence,” the statement said.

Liber Khan, father of the convict, had challenged the death sentence awarded to his son by the military court and his execution in the PHC through his lawyer Muhammad Arif Jan. The lawyer submitted before the bench that the convict’s father claimed the security forces during an operation took Said Akbar into custody in 2009 and since then he was untraceable.

The lawyer explained that the convict was shifted to the interment centre at Paitham in Swat district and his relatives then held two meetings with him in 2016. However, he submitted that an in-charge of internment centre in Kohat had informed the family members about the death sentence of the detainee. He had asked all his family members to meet him on May 3 as he was to be hanged on May 4.

The Federation through the Ministry of Interior, Defence Ministry, Pakistan Army through Chief of Army Staff, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government through secretary Home and in-charge internment centre Kohat were made parties to the petition. It was claimed in the review petition that the petitioner and his other relatives approached the respondents several times for release of the detenue and provision of the record, if any, of his guilt, but no document was provided.

It was claimed that the death sentence to the son of the petitioner was illegal and unconstitutional as no opportunity of self-defence was given to the convict. The trial was termed against the provision of Article 10-A of the Constitution.

It was stated in the petition that the convict's case had not been dealt with in accordance with the law as the procedural law like Criminal Procedure Code was not followed.

"The code stated that the trial should be started from the framing of charge subject to the provision of certain documents, recording of evidence on the part of prosecution, cross-examination of the accused under section 342 CrPC and delivery of order and provision of its copy to the accused, but in the present case all these are missing which clearly shows the malafide of the respondents," the petition argued.

The petitioner prayed the court to stop and suspend the death sentence till a final decision in the petition.
