    One death row convict hanged

SAHIWAL (Dunya News) – One death row convict was executed on the Sahiwal Central Jail on early Thursday morning, Dunya News reported. The dead body of the prisoner was handed over to his heirs.

Death row prisoner Muhammad Akram, a resident of Arifwala, was hanged for killing a man named Tufail over a land dispute in 1999 in the jurisdiction of Khadyan Police Station.

An Additional Sessions Judge of Kasur had awarded him death sentence in the case in 2002.

More than 320 death row prisoners have been hanged so far as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted a six-year moratorium on death penalty on December 17, 2014 for those convicted for terrorism a day after the deadly attack on Army Public School in Peshawar that left 150 persons including mostly children dead. There are more than 8,000 prisoners on death row in the country.

Death row convict sent to gallows in Mianwali

A death row convict was hanged in Mianwali Central Jail on Thursday.

According to details, Mumrez had been convicted in a double murder case. He had killed one Fateh Khan and his son Amir in 2005 over a marriage feud. His execution was carried out early in the morning.

Pakistan has carried out over 330 executions of criminals and militants since lifting a moratorium on the death penalty in 2014. The National Action Plan (NAP) was unveiled to curb militancy after Taliban assailants gunned down more than 150 people, most of them children, at Peshawar’s Army Public School on December 16, 2014.

In accordance with the NAP, the six-year moratorium on the country’s death penalty was lifted and the constitution amended to allow military courts to try those accused of carrying out attacks.

The army has launched the Operation Zarb-e-Azb in a bid to wipe out militant bases in North Waziristan tribal area and bring an end to the bloody decade-long insurgency that has cost Pakistan thousands of lives.

Plea to fast-track appeals of death row convicts

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court asked the federal government on Tuesday to respond to a petition seeking early disposal of appeals of the around 7,124 inmates on death row.

The directive was issued by a three-judge bench headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan on a petition filed by Barrister Zafarullah Khan of the Watan Party.

The petitioner said that 1,031 of the cases were pending before the Supreme Court, 5,378 in high courts, 21 in the Federal Shariat Court and six at General Headquarters.

The figure also includes 532 mercy petitions before the president. A number of these have been pending for 19 years while executions in 78 cases have been stayed on his orders.

The petitioner regretted that delays in deciding the appeals by the superior judiciary were a violation of the fundamental rights of the inmates guaranteed by the Constitution.

Barrister Khan urged the apex court to expedite action on the appeals lying before it and issue directions that mercy petitions pending with the president be fast-tracked.

In its 2008 report, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) had found that over 7,000 prisoners were on death row in various jails in the country and that the prisons housed 95,016 inmates against a capacity of 40,825. Across Pakistan, 67 per cent of the prisoners were awaiting trial. The case will be taken up again after a fortnight.
