Felt like propoganda to me. I'd love to see some proof that her family was in danger if she didn't attempt to smuggle in a mountain of coke. To me, she comes across as poor and desperate and is reluctant to admit to it. I'm annoyed she keeps playing the political card...like she was set up and didn't have what she had. And quote of the piece "I don't think I did anything real bad. If I had to go through all this again, I'd make the same choices" really speaks to me as to the wretch she really is. She's not a pawn. She's guilty as sin, and should have KNOWN the consequences of her actions.

It was a good read...and your moral is spot on. She's just a wretch in my book...

Death row Briton in Bali loses bid for government funds

A British grandmother on death row for trafficking drugs into Bali lost her attempt on Monday to get the government in London to fund a last-ditch appeal against her sentence.

Three Court of Appeal judges upheld a previous court ruling that the British government was not obliged to pay for an "adequate lawyer" for 56-year-old Lindsay Sandiford.

The Foreign Office has refused as a matter of policy.

Sandiford was sentenced to death in Indonesia in January after cocaine with a street value of $2.4 million was found in her suitcase as she arrived on the resort island of Bali last May.

The verdict was a shock as prosecutors had recommended jailing her for 15 years.

Police said Sandiford was at the centre of a drugs-importing ring involving three other Britons, but she claimed she was forced to transport the drugs in order to protect her children whose safety was at stake.

The Court of Appeal in London heard that Sandiford needs about £8,000 (9,400 euros, $12,200) to continue her fight against her death sentence, and only £2,000 had so far been raised.

In a statement issued by the legal charity Reprieve ahead of Monday's ruling, Sandiford said she was "desperate".

"My family has done all they possibly can to support me and nobody could ask anyone to do more," she said.

She added: "If I should die -- and I hope I don't, but I fear I may -- then I hope that my execution will prompt the British government to do more for others."

Sandiford lost her first appeal to the Bali High Court on April 8 after a closed hearing of three judges decided the lower court's original sentence had been "accurate and correct".

Her lawyer Fadillah Agus said she would lodge an appeal with Indonesia's highest court on Tuesday or Wednesday this week.

If the Supreme Court rejects her appeal, she can seek a judicial review of the decision from the same court. After that, only the president can grant her a reprieve.

Most people handed the death penalty for drugs offences in Indonesia fail to get their sentences lifted on appeal and face a long wait in jail before being taken to a remote, undisclosed location at night and executed by firing squad.

Indonesia executes 3 death row inmates convicted of murder, mutilation

Indonesia has executed three death row inmates who were convicted of mutilating a man and murdering a family.

Attorney General Office spokesman Untung Arimuladi says the three Indonesian men were executed by firing squad Friday at a high-security prison on Nusakambangan island.

A court in South Sumatra province had sentenced 48-year-old Jurit bin Abdullah and 52-year-old Ibrahim bin Ujang to death in 1998 after they were found guilty of beheading and mutilating a man.

The third inmate, 47-year-old Suryadi Swabuana, was convicted of killing an entire family at a house in the province in 1991.

Arimuladi said six other convicts are to be executed this year.

More than 140 people are on death row in Indonesia, mostly for drug crimes and about a third of them are foreigners.

It's been quiet since those executions. This country wants to do 10 before years end.

Any new news on Granny? Or Andrew Chan (who is not on the execution list this year)?

Jakarta Inmate Sentenced to Death for Running Ecstasy Ring From Jail

A convicted drug trafficker found guilty of organizing the shipment of some four tons of Ecstasy from China while behind bars was sentenced to death by the West Jakarta District Court on Monday.

Convict Freddy Budiman arranged the delivery of 1.4 million pills from his Cipinang Penitentiary prison cell in May, 2012. The drugs, which were sent from Shenzhen, China, were concealed in a shipping container registered as carrying fish tanks and successfully passed through security checks at North Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok port. The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) raided the truck in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, shortly after it left the port, discovering the shipment.

Freddy later admitted to organizing the shipment, but told investigators that he only asked for 500,000 Ecstasy pills. The order was apparently more than doubled because the manufacturer thought Freddy had reliable connections with Indonesian drug markets and nightclubs.

He used connections at Cipinang Penitentiary to make the order and sneak the container past Tanjung Priok security Chief Judge Aswandi said.

“The defendant paid Rp 90 million [$8,900] for the container service,” Aswandi said, according to the Indonesian news portal Tempo.co. “The defendant admitted to earning 10 percent [of the sales] as profit if he got to sell the extra narcotics.”

Freddy, who was already behind bars on drug smuggling charges stemming from a bust in Sumatra, was charged with trafficking under Indonesia’s harsh anti-narcotics laws.

He was sentenced to death after judges found no mitigating factors, stating that Freddy continued to sell drugs from prison, “where he should have regretted his wrongdoings,” instead.

“The defendant has been proven guilty of purchasing and trading more than 5 grams of Category I narcotics,” Aswandi said. “[We hereby] hand down the death penalty to Freddy Budiman.”

Freddy said he was deciding whether to appeal the sentence.

Indonesia Delays Death Penalty for Six Inmates

Indonesia announced on Friday that it would delay carrying out the death penalty for six prisoners.

“We are not committing any executions this month. We decided to push them back to August or September,” Mahfud Mannan, the deputy attorney general for criminal cases, said.

Mahfud declined to reveal the reason for the delay.

The AGO previously announced its plan to execute 10 inmates this year. As of June, Indonesia has put four inmates to death.

In March, Adami Wilson, 48, a drug trafficker from Malawi, was executed by firing squad in Indonesia’s first execution of a convicted felon since 2008.

Adami, 48, was sentenced to death in 2004 for smuggling 1 kilogram of heroin by the Tangerang District Court, according to reports in Majalah Detik. He filed an appeal the same year, but it was declined.

Last month, Indonesia executed three men who were convicted of premeditated murder. Suryadi Swabhuana, Jurit, and Ibrahim were put to death by firing squad in Nusakambangan prison, on an island off the coast of Java.

Amnesty International slammed the latest executions as a “major regressive step.”

Death Row Inmate Given Private Room for Sex, Drug Use With Model Girlfriend

The head of East Jakarta’s Cipinang drug penitentiary has been suspended following reports that the jail provided a special private room for a death row inmate to meet with his girlfriend, an official said on Thursday.

“It is true, the official in question has been suspended as of July 25. This was done to facilitate the process of investigation,” Akbar Hadi, the spokesman of the directorate general for penitentiary affairs at the Justice and Human Rights Ministry, said.

Akbar was referring to Thurman Hutapea, the director of the Cipinang drug jail, which is adjacent to the high security Cipinang prison in East Jakarta.

Akbar also said that the investigation, currently being conducted by the ministry’s inspectorate general, was related to reports of the existence of a “special room” at the detention facility.

Vanny Rossyane, 22, told the Indonesian news portal detik.com earlier this week that she had been able to have intimate relations and even enjoy drugs with her boyfriend, Freddy Budiman, who is currently on the death row and being detained at the Cipinang narcotics prison.

Presenting pictures to support her claim, she said that her meetings and activities with Freddy were made possible by the availability of a “private room” at the jail.

She said the facility had been made available to them since November last of year and that the last time they used of the room was in May.

She said that after arranging for the meeting by telephone, she would come to the jail and on average spend about six hours on each visit.

Freddy, 37, was sentenced to death by the West Jakarta municipal court on July 15 after he was found guilty of organizing an attempt to smuggle 1.4 million ecstasy pills from China.

The court, arguing that the convict had organized the smuggling while he was in jail for another drug offense, also prohibited him from having access to communication devices.

Vanny, a model, said she was introduced to Freddy at the same jail through another friend.

The report was the latest to address the special facilities and privileges wealthy convicts and detainees can enjoy in prisons. Records showed that rooms with wide flat screen televisions, karaoke rooms, fitness equipments and cells with air conditioners and plush beds have been discovered among the special facilities made available to rich detainees.

Death Row Inmate Transferred to Maximum-Security Prison

Death row inmate Freddy Budiman has been moved from the Cipinang narcotics prison to the maximum-security Nusakambangan island prison following recent revelations about his freedom to operate his drug business from behind bars.

Justice and Human Rights Minister Amir Syamsuddin said on Tuesday that Freddy was being “put into [solitary confinement]” for 14 days because five packages of crystal methamphetamine were found on his person when he arrived at the new penitentiary.

He added that his isolation may be extended.

Freddy made headlines after one of his girlfriends told the media that he and she were able to often meet in a private room to consume drugs and engage in sexual intercourse.

Following the report, a warden at the prison also found that Freddy was in possession of more than a dozen mobile phones.

Freddy, 37, was sentenced to death by the West Jakarta municipal court on July 15 after he was found guilty of organizing an attempt to smuggle 1.4 million ecstasy pills from China while in prison.

Prison Officials Sanctioned for Freddy’s Preferential Treatment

An internal probe conducted by the Justice and Human Rights Ministry has found two Cipinang Prison officials guilty of accepting money to provide preferential treatment to death-row inmate Freddy Budiman.

“The investigation by the inspectorate general proves that the photo of the office that was published in media reports is indeed the office of the head of the working activities section,” Amir said.

Freddy’s girlfriend, Vonny Rossyane, gave pictures of the room in question to the media. She claimed to have been permitted to have sex and consume drugs with Freddy.

Justice and Human Rights Minister Amnir Syamsudin identified the two officials as Abner Jolando, who heads the prison’s work-training program, and Irwan Syahputra, who also works toward preparing prisoners for the workplace.

The two officials, Amnir said, “were guilty of abusing their authority by using a prison office to allow [Freddy] to receive visits from friends and family for fees between Rp 1.5 million ($150) and Rp 2 million.”

Amnir would not say what punishment the two officials would incur, but they will be mindful that the head of the prison, Thurman Saud Hutapea, was removed from his post.

Freddy has since been transferred to Kambangan maximum security prison in Central Java. He was was sentenced to death on July 15 by the West Jakarta municipal court after he was found guilty of organizing an attempt from prison to smuggle 1.4 million ecstasy pills from China.

Lindsay Sandiford loses final appeal against drug trafficking death sentence in Bali

A British grandmother sentenced to death for drug trafficking in Indonesia, now faces a firing squad after her final appeal was rejected by the country's highest court.

Lindsay Sandiford's only hope now is for clemency from the country's president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who has pardoned four drug dealers on death row since he came to power in 2004.

However, he has also made it clear that he routinely turns down most "almost all" such requests on behalf of foreign nationals, saying that Indonesians do not get such leniency.

Sandiford, 57, was arrested in May last year after cocaine valued at around £2.4 million (£1.6 million) was found during a routine check of her suitcase as she arrived on a flight into the holiday island of Bali. She had come in from Bangkok in Thailand, and was accused by police of being at the centre of a drug ring involving three other Britons.

On Thursday, a three-judge panel at the supreme court in Jakarta unanimously rejected her appeal. It backed an earlier decision, taken by the Denpasar district court in Bali, which sentenced her to death, and a separate ruling by the island's high court, which rejected her first appeal.

"The decision is unanimous," said the panel's chief judge, Artidjo Alkostar, adding that there was "no dissenting opinion".

Sandiford now has the option of a judicial review into her case, but that would require fresh evidence to be brought before it would be granted. In the absence of that, her next and possibly final legal step will be to seek a pardon from the presidential office.

Five foreigners have been executed in Indonesia since 1998, all for drug crimes. While there have been no executions since 2008, when ten people were put to death, Mr Yudhoyono, a retired army general, has made it clear that he does not like to interfere in his country's justice system.

In a televised speech in 2011, he said: "'I often receive requests from many countries, be they directly or indirectly communicated, be they written or not written.

"My answer is that law is supreme above everything else. I turn down almost all requests of pardon and acquittal from the death sentence. It is for the sake of justice. Our fellow countrymen get death sentence for heavy crimes."

Convicts given the death penalty for drugs offences in Indonesia generally face a long wait in jail before being taken to a remote, undisclosed location at night and executed by firing squad.

Sandiford, from Redcar in Teesside, insists that she was set up and was forced by a gang to smuggle drugs to protect her children.

Her alleged accomplice, Julian Ponder, 43, from Brighton, was jailed for six years after being cleared of smuggling but convicted of possessing cocaine. His partner, Rachel Dougall, 38, from Brighton, received a one-year jail sentence, while Paul Beales, a long-time Bali resident, was sentenced to four years in jail for possession of hashish.

A British grandmother facing the firing squad for smuggling drugs into Bali could be sent home if the Government agrees to extradite a tycoon wanted over a £900 million banking scandal.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Sandiford's life could be spared as part of an unofficial prisoner swap between Britain and Indonesia. The deal involved a request that Britain extradite multi-millionaire Rafat Ali Rizvi, a 52-year-old British national sentenced in his absence to 15 years in 2010 for allegedly stealing funds from Indonesia’s collapsed Bank Century.

In exchange, Sandiford would be allowed to return to the UK to serve out a jail sentence, along with a second Briton on death row, Gareth Cashmore.

Britain has previously raised concerns about Sandiford's treatment in the island's notorious Kerobokan jail, alleging in papers submitted to Denpasar district court that officials threatened her with a gun and deprived her of sleep.
