David Dickerson - Mississippi Death Row

    Paula Hamilton, 36

Copiah murderer sentenced to death in ex-wife's slaying

David Dickerson convicted in the brutal 2011 slaying of ex-wife

Jurors just received instructions in the Copiah County capital murder case of David Dickerson.

The jury returned a verdict in 41 minutes flat yesterday, convicting Dickerson of capital murder, armed robbery and arson. Today they must decide whether or not he will receive the death penalty.

The defense called several witnesses, some mental health professionals, and some family members, to testify to Dickerson's mental illness.

In January 2011, Dickerson broke into the home of his ex-wife, Paula Hamilton, 36. He dragged her from the home, stabbed, beat, shot and set her on fire before disappearing into the woods.

Dickerson's court date has been put off on multiple occasions as his lawyers M. A. Bass and Andre DeGruy have called for mental evaluations.

Copiah County's last capital murder case was the trial of Erik Hollie, who shot Weston store owner Denmon Ward.

Hollie pled guilty and asked for the death penalty.

Mississippi Supreme Court upholds conviction in death penalty appeal

The Mississippi Supreme Court has denied the appeal of a Copiah County man sentenced to death for the 2011 slaying of the mother of his daughter.

The court on Thursday upheld the capital murder conviction of David Dickerson. Dickerson, now 45, was also sentenced to 40 years for armed robbery and 20 years for arson.

Prosecutors say on the day Dickerson and Paula Hamilton were to appear in justice court on a stalking complaint Hamilton had brought against him, Dickerson went to her home, shot, slashed and stabbed her, poured gasoline on her and left her body to burn.

The Supreme Court denied Dickerson's argument that he was mentally disabled and could not be executed. The court says no expert testified that Dickerson was mentally disabled.

Copiah County man convicted of capital murder will remain on death row

David Dickerson was convicted for the murder of Paula Hamilton in 2012

COPIAH CO., Miss. - A Copiah County man will remain on death row.

The State Supreme Court denied the appeal of 51-year-old David Dickerson. He was convicted for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Paula Hamilton, who was the mother of his daughter.

Dickerson shot Hamilton to death and then burned her body. He was convicted of capital murder in 2012.

Dickerson appealed his conviction and death sentence based upon an alleged intellectual disability.

In a mental evaluation, Dickerson was ruled mentally competent to stand trial and doctors said he had no credible symptoms of mental illness according to court documents.

The doctors also said Dickerson was uncooperative and fabricated psychiatric symptoms. His appeal was denied Thursday.
