Woman arrested in DeFuniak Springs shooting death

An acquaintance of a woman who was shot to death in a mobile home near here Tuesday night was arrested early Thursday and charged with murder.

Teresa McKee, 44, was being held at the Walton County Jail in the shooting death of 45-year-old Stephanie Lockwood.

About 9 p.m. Tuesday, a neighbor reported hearing gunshots coming from a nearby mobile home off County Road 1084 in the Liberty community about 10 miles north of DeFuniak Springs. Deputies responded and discovered Lockwood’s body inside.

Witnesses told investigators the two women had an on-again, off-again friendship, according to a news release from Walton County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday.

McKee lives on McKee Road, about a half-mile from Lockwood’s trailer, according to her arrest report.

Court records in Okaloosa and Walton counties show she has no history of violence.

"I’m very pleased with a very thorough effort (by law-enforcement officials)," Walton County Sheriff Mike Adkinson said. "They really did an outstanding job, just staying with this the last 48 hours non-stop."

McKee told investigators that went to Lockwood’s home carrying a gun, and the two women "exchanged words," the news release states.

Her arrest report states that she was carrying a 12-gauge pump shotgun.

McKee fired two shots. The first hit an entertainment center. The second shot hit Lockwood in the left side of her face and killed her, according to the arrest report.

After she was read her Miranda rights, McKee confessed to shooting Lockwood, the report states.

Investigators would not speculate on a motive.

"Beyond what was put out (in the press release), they’re not really commenting on motive," said Sheriff’s Office spokesman Mike Gurspan, who added that the shooting is still under investigation and interviews still are being conducted.

A family member, who asked not to be named, tearfully described Lockwood as a "wonderful" and "giving" person who made everybody laugh.

"She always turned a bad situation into a good one," she sobbed.

Roger Leatherberry, who manages McLain’s Family Steakhouse in DeFuniak Springs, said Lockwood had worked at the restaurant only for about a week and added that he "had no problems with her whatsoever."

"Her last night was Monday night and everything was fine, then we got the news (Wednesday) morning," he said.

Three significant Walton County court events were rescheduled Thursday.

All three appear on the docket of Circuit Judge Kelvin Wells.

The trial of Teresa McKee, a DeFuniak Springs woman accused of shooting a friend in the face following an argument, was pushed back from Monday until March 7.

McKee, 45, is accused of shooting 45-year-old Stephanie Lockwood at Lockwood’s mobile home in the rural Liberty com-munity. Neighbors said the two women had an “on again, off again” relationship with one another.

McKee has been charged with second-degree murder.

DeFUNIAK SPRINGS — Teresa McKee will serve 10 years in prison for killing of her best friend.

McKee actually was sentenced to 20 years Thursday for killing Stephanie Lockwood on Aug. 11, 2009. Lockwood died in her trailer home in the Liberty community after she was shot at close range with a shotgun.

Walton County Circuit Judge Kelvin Wells suspended 10 years of the sentence and ordered McKee to undergo a mental health evaluation and treatment, if necessary.

She also was ordered to pay Lockwood’s funeral expenses.

McKee originally was charged with first-degree murder and faced a possible life sentence without parole.

But following a lengthy trial a jury announced March 11 that it could not reach a verdict. The state initially intended to retry the case but later settled for a plea of manslaughter with a firearm.

Lockwood’s sister was the only person to testify at Thursday’s sentencing hearing. She read two poems written in honor of Lockwood.

Prosecutor Angela Mason said McKee showed no emotion during the proceeding until she looked at her family while she was being fingerprinted.

McKee was arrested the day after her husband, Piper McKee, found Lockwood’s body. He testified for the prosecution at the trial, as did McKee’s mother-in-law, Irene McKee.

Irene McKee told jurors Teresa McKee and Lockwood were “very close.”

Mason argued at the trial that McKee confessed details to investigators that implicated her as the murderer.

During taped interviews conducted during the investigation McKee called on an imaginary friend named Cindy to help her talk about the murder.

Defense Attorney Jeremy Keich argued at the trial that Piper McKee could have killed Lockwood.

Walton County sheriff’s investigators considered Piper McKee a suspect early on, according to testimony from investigator Rome Garrett.
