Chad Cobb Gets LWOP in 2012 OH Slaying of Ashley Biggs

Defendant Chad Cobb will be arraigned in Judge Amy Corrigall Jones’ courtroom Tuesday at 2 p.m., according to Summit County court officials.

The state of Ohio is seeking the death penalty for Cobb for the alleged murder of Ashley Biggs.

Police in New Franklin said Cobb killed 25-year-old Ashley Biggs in the early morning hours of June 21. She worked for Domino’s Pizza and made a delivery to the side of a building on West Turkeyfoot Lake Road at 12:45 a.m.

When Biggs did not return, a missing persons report was filed. Police found evidence of a struggle at the location where the pizza was supposed to be delivered.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office located Biggs’ car in Chippewa Township hours later at about 11:30 a.m. Her body was inside the vehicle, according to New Franklin police, and she was bound with zip ties and had blunt force trauma to the head.

Cobb pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder and kidnapping charges. Bond was previously set for $1.5 million.

Remains found in car identified as missing Summit County woman Ashley Biggs, suspect arrested

Less than a day after a 25-year-old Summit County woman was reported missing, her car and body were discovered in Wayne County and her child’s father has been arrested, the sheriff's department said.

New Franklin police said 25-year-old Ashley Biggs of Akron worked for Domino’s Pizza in Akron and was making a delivery to the side of the building on West Turkeyfoot Lake Road at about 12:45 a.m. Thursday – but did not return.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office took a missing persons report for her at about 1 a.m.

At the request of the sheriff’s office, New Franklin police checked West Turkeyfoot Lake Road and discovered the scene of a struggle. Officers said there was blood on the ground, as well as scattered change and marks indicating someone had been dragged.

While other area agencies searched for Biggs, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office located her car in Chippewa Township hours later at about 11:30 a.m. Her body was inside the vehicle, according to New Franklin police, and she was bound with zip ties and had blunt force trauma to the head.

Investigators said it’s unclear how Biggs died.

Police said it appeared Biggs was killed at a location in Summit County and brought to the Wayne County location after the fact.

Officers arrested 30-year-old Chad Cobb of Rittman. Cobb has been charged with aggravated murder and kidnapping. He’s being held at the Summit County Jail.

According to New Franklin police, Biggs and Cobb had a bitter custody battle over their 6-year-old daughter.

In June, Summit County court records show he complained that Biggs was not allowing their daughter to call him every night, like the court ordered. He also complained Biggs initially refused to allow the girl to accompany him on a summer vacation.

In March, a judge ordered Biggs and Cobb to have no contact for one year. In February, Cobb requested a new child custody agreement.

Neighbors told NewsChannel5’s Sarah Buduson that Cobb also had a problem with Biggs' partner. Biggs lived with the woman and, in Facebook photos, they appear to have a romantic relationship. In December 2011, Cobb obtained a protective order that would stop the woman from seeing his daughter.

Cobb pleaded guilty to domestic violence charges involving Biggs in 2005 in Akron Municipal Court.

New Franklin police are continuing to investigate the case.

Life in prison for man who murdered his ex-girlfriend

AKRON, OH (WOIO) - In Summit County Common Pleas Court, Chad Cobb pleads guilty Tuesday to murdering his ex-girlfriend last June.

Cobb, 31, abducted Ashley Biggs, 25, from her home in New Franklin on June 20, 2012.

Biggs, the mother of Cobb's six-year-old daughter, was working as a pizza delivery driver when Cobb had a female caller lure Biggs to an empty office parking lot in New Franklin.

Cobb tased and beat Biggs before strangling her to death with a zip tie. He then stuffed her body in the back seat of a car, which he abandoned in a cornfield in Chippewa Township in Wayne County.

Cobb and Biggs had been going through a very contentious custody battle over their daughter.

Cobb pled guilty to aggravated murder, kidnapping, aggravated robbery, felonious assault, retaliation, tampering with evidence, grand theft, abuse of a corpse, and possessing criminal tools.

As part of the plea agreement, Cobb agreed to a sentence of life in prison with no parole eligibility. He faced the death penalty if the case went to trial.

Rittman man loses appeal in murder case

A Rittman man’s appeal of his life sentence for the murder of his ex-girlfriend has been denied in a unanimous ruling by Akron’s 9th District Court of Appeals.

Chad Cobb, 32, pleaded guilty in early 2013 to the strangulation death of Ashley Biggs, the mother of his 6-year-old child.

Biggs, who was from Jackson Township, was working as a driver for Domino’s Pizza in Green when she was called to a West Turkeyfoot Road business about midnight June 20, 2012.

Cobb ambushed her when she arrived, striking her in the head and strangling her, police said, with a 4-foot-long plastic zip tie.

The two were involved in a custody dispute.

Cobb, originally charged with the death penalty, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, kidnapping, aggravated robbery and other crimes.

In the first claim of his appeal, he argued that the trial court didn’t have jurisdiction in his case because prosecutors failed to prove the death occurred in Summit County.

Ninth District Judge Eve Belfance, author of the 3-0 decision, ruled that Cobb forfeited his venue challenge by pleading guilty to the written terms of his indictment, which stated that all of the crimes occurred in Summit County.

Two other claims also were denied.

Murderer’s ex-wife arrested in connection with 2012 killing of pizza delivery driver in Summit County, police say

    By Robin Goist

NEW FRANKLIN, Ohio -- A Rittman woman was arrested Monday in connection with the 2012 beating and strangulation death of a pizza delivery driver in Summit County, for which the woman’s ex-husband is serving a life sentence, according to police.

Erica Stefanko, 36, has been indicted by a grand jury on charges including aggravated murder, murder, kidnapping, aggravated robbery, felonious assault, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse, New Franklin police said Monday in a news release. Court records related to the indictment were not available Monday afternoon.

In 2012, Stefanko was married to Chad Cobb, now 37, who pleaded guilty in 2013 to killing his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend, Ashley Biggs.

Cobb, of Rittman, and Biggs, of Jackson Township, were involved in a custody dispute over their then-6-year-old daughter, investigators said.

Around midnight on June 20, 2012, Biggs was working as a driver for Domino’s Pizza in Green when she delivered an order to an address on West Turkeyfoot Lake Road in New Franklin, according to police.

When Biggs arrived, Cobb hit her on the head and strangled her with a four-foot-long zip tie, police said. Her body was found the following day in the backseat of her car in a cornfield in Wayne County.

Cobb avoided the death penalty after reaching a plea agreement to serve life in prison without the possibility of parole. He pleaded guilty to charges including aggravated murder, felonious assault, kidnapping, aggravated robbery and abuse of a corpse, court records show.

Police said they now believe Stefanko, whose last name was Lyon at the time, called in the bogus pizza order to lure Biggs to her death.

Erica Stefanko sentenced to life in prison for 2012 murder of Army veteran in Summit County

    By Chris Anderson
    Cleveland 19 News

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - The woman who was found guilty by a jury in the 2012 murder of an Army veteran faced a judge for sentencing on Tuesday afternoon.

Erica Stefanko, 38, was sentenced to life in prison for her role in the murder of Ashley Biggs. She will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years.

Stefanko, a mother of four children, was convicted in November 2020 of killing the 25-year-old Biggs in 2012.

At the time of the murder, Stefanko was married to Chad Cobb, who was in a custody battle with Biggs over their daughter.

Biggs worked then as a pizza delivery driver. She was lured to a closed business in New Franklin in June 2012 where she was assaulted and strangled to death, investigators said.

Stefanko and Cobb then dumped Biggs’ body in a Wayne County field before they returned home and washed off evidence of the crime, according to Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh.

Biggs’ body was found the following day.

Law enforcement officers located Cobb hiding in a nearby wooded area and arrested him shortly after.

Cobb pleaded guilty in the case in 2013 and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility for parole.

Stefanko was arrested in November 2019 for her involvement in Biggs’ murder and indicted on numerous charges, which initially included aggravated murder, murder, kidnapping, and aggravated robbery.

Relatives of both the victim and Cobb spoke emotionally during Stenfanko’s sentencing. One of Biggs’ daughters claimed that Stefanko made her eat dog feces because of jealousy that stems from the relationship she had with her father.

Court Reverses Woman’s Murder Conviction Because Her Co-Defendant Ex-Husband Testified Against Her Remotely

    By Alberto Luperon
    Law & Crime

An Ohio appeals court overturned the murder conviction of a woman who allegedly lured her then-husband’s former girlfriend into a deadly trap.

Judges with the Court of Appeals in the Ninth Judicial Circuit determined that the trial court erred by letting confessed killer Chad Cobb testify remotely against defendant Erica Stefanko, 39, amid the COVID-19 pandemic. They decided this violated Stefanko’s right to confront the witnesses against her in court on charges she helped kill Ashley Nicole Biggs, 25.

The Summit County Prosecutor’s Office declined to comment on the ruling, telling Law&Crime that they are still reviewing everything for their next step.
