I find this type of post abhorrent to be honest.

I am from England and of course we no longer have the death penalty here. Having said that I wish we had harsher punishments for certain crimes.

Wherein I would shed no tears for peadophiles, child killers, cold blooded murderers etc. I still struggle greatly with the death penatly .. mainly because throughout history there have been far too many been proven innocent, after death.

No I'm happy that life means life. With regards to paedophiles, (Im passioniate about these types) one strike and OUT !

I do sometimes find some of the last comments made by some of those put to death to be rather odd, not to mention hypocritical.

I cannot believe that I partially agree with you TKE. I am against the DP personally, but I do think that if a person is executed it is probably much safer for the guard staff if he/she is sedated. Otherwise I would have concerns for their safety if the inmate became volatile or combative. These people are just trying to do their job.

Have to look at the forum's name! No one here has ever been the victim of murder, but I'd wager several of us had an innocent friend or loved one who was murdered. Your friend or loved one is gone while the murderer gets free legal counsel and room and board. That tends to skew your perception. Look at the case histories. No recent execution has been as painful or inhuman as the murders the executed committed.

I am not sympathising with those who have comitted heinous crimes, I merely suggest that there are too many innocents who have been put to death. One innocent put to death is too many. I am certainly no hard core namby pamby tree hugging liberal hon, harsh punishments should be given. Also I see a lot of dispartiy with this and across states in the US, especially when it comes to skin colour (I am white).

I was kind of up in the air on this one but I don't think it's a problem. Seeing as it can make the execution process go more smoothly.

Exactly, sedating the condemned will make it easier for all those involved in the execution. Plus the prison system are not beasts, relishing in the "cruelty" they are inflicting on the condemned, they are simply doing their job which is to end the life of the condemned in accordance with the law.

I find saying we should be cruel to condemned murderers because they were cruel to their victims is no different to when the antis equate the death penalty to murder by the state. Since we give the state the privilege of taking people's lives we should by the same token expect more from the state when it comes to ending someone's life. I'd hold the state to a higher standard than I'd hold a murderer personally and how the death penalty is carried out should reflect that.

The British protocol for conducting hangings allowed for the condemned to be giving a glass of brandy if they were nervous prior to their execution (I copied this idea before my PhD viva and it definitely helped ), so it's hardly a new idea to give the condemned something to relax them.

I have no problem with giving the condemned a sedative. As has been pointed out in this thread, doing so makes the condemned more docile and the execution process smoother.

And even in states that prohibit smoking in their prisons, for the final day and while he or she is in the condemned cell near the death chamber, I'd even give the condemned a pack of cigarettes if requested.

. . . but maybe that would be going entirely too far!

I am definitely torn over to sedate or not. On one hand they should be clear headed as they face execution,on the other, if it prevents a struggle......

I am in favor of giving enough of a sedative to calm their nerves and keeping the officers who have to escort the inmate into the death chamber and the tie down team safe in case of a struggle however, it should not be enough where the inmate is not aware of his punishment.

Am I missing something? How many executed offenders since 1977 in the US have been exonerated after death? I can't remember any?
