    Murders Abroad

'Oh my god, you have stabbed me!' Last words of teenager knifed to death protecting younger brother from phone muggers

A teenager was stabbed to death protecting his younger brother from a gang that had stolen a phone.

Dogan Ismail, 17, died after being knifed in the chest on Sunday afternoon at a block of flats in Walworth, south-east London.

The sixth-form student and his younger brother Orhan, 15, had gone to retrieve a stolen BlackBerry when they were confronted by up to four youths and a row broke out.

The mobile phone had previously been stolen by a trio of pupils - that Orhan recognised from his school - as he walked home from playing football.

Two days later he received a message saying: 'If you come here we will give it back to you,' according to The Sun.

The pair headed to Latimer House to retrieve the phone, but instead one of the boys pulled out a knife and stabbed Dogan in the chest at the top of a stairwell.

The teenager bled to death as his younger brother tried desperately to save his life.

Orhan later told his family: 'He made to give back the phone, but instead brought a knife from behind his back and stabbed Dogan in the chest.

'His last words were, ‘Oh my God, you have stabbed me!’ The guy just calmly walked away.'

Police have now taken the unusual step of naming a youth wanted for questioning in connection with Dogan's death.

Dawda Jallow, 15, from the Peckham area, is described as black, clean shaven with cropped black afro hair, 5ft 5in tall and slightly built.

He has brown eyes and speaks with a London accent, although he is a Gambian national.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Bonner of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command, leading the investigation, said: 'I am seeking help from the local community to locate Dawda Jallow. I appeal to anyone who knows of his whereabouts, or has any information that could assist us, to come forward.

'If Dawda is seen, please do not approach him but contact police.

'I appeal direct to Dawda to present himself at a police station so this matter can be dealt with.'
Dogan, who is believed to have studied at the Walworth Academy, is of Turkish origin and lived in nearby Peckham.

The Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service were called to Latimer House, Beaconsfield Road, at 4.20pm, where the victim, from Peckham, south-east London, was subsequently pronounced dead.

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder and a 39-year-old woman on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, and were yesterday bailed.

Mr Bonner added: 'My thoughts go out to Dogan's family, who have been left devastated by his senseless killing. That it should happen at this time of year is all the more tragic. I would like to urge anyone with information about this incident to come forward and speak with my officers or, if they would prefer to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers.

The murder scene is yards from where 21-year-old Shaun Chambers died on September 26 after being stabbed in an apparent gang-related killing.

Mr Chambers, 21, from Greenwich, was stabbed in the heart.

However Mr Bonner said there was 'no evidence' to suggest Dogan's death was gang related.

He said: 'I know there will also be local speculation about the fact that this murder took place on the same spot that Shaun Chambers was killed on 26 September, but I would like to make clear that there is no link between the incidents aside from the location.'

Dogan is the eighth teenager to be murdered in London in 2012.

Residents on the estate today said they were living in fear following the second such incident on their doorstep in the space of a few months.

A mother-of-two, who did not want to be identified, said: 'This is a very bad estate. It's so dangerous. I want to move, but I have to wait for the council to move me because I am poor.'

I live a few miles from the sink estate.
    Its a gang thing.
Why else would people you know rob your phone then offer it back at a meeting ?
They fell for a trap and someone died. End of story.
Play with fire you get burnt. Sorry but the lesson is not learnt. Never will be. Just eliminate.

List Of School Shootings in the United States

This is a chronological list of school shootings in the United States.

Prior to 1989, there were only a handful of incidents in which two or more non-perpetrators were killed by firearms at a school, including the 1966 University of Texas massacre, the 1974 Olean High School shooting, the 1976 California State University, Fullerton massacre, and the 1979 Cleveland Elementary School shooting (the 1927 Bath School disaster was a bombing, not a shooting, with a firearm used only to detonate explosives), the most recent shooting was the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14, 2012. From 1989 to 2012, there have been at least 40 such incidents.

    History

It should be noted that the following list is mostly derived from the archives of the New York Times news articles, where prior to 1950's, very little information was reported from the Mid West and the West Coast. Although accurate in the actual accounts noted below, this list is most likely incomplete, devoid of any incidences west of the Mississippi River prior to the mid 1900's.

    1700s

The earliest known United States shooting to happen on school property was the Pontiac's Rebellion school massacre on July 26, 1764, where four Lenape American Indians entered the schoolhouse near present-day Greencastle, Pennsylvania, shot and killed schoolmaster Enoch Brown, and killed nine or ten children (reports vary). Only three children survived

    1800s

    • November 2, 1853: Louisville, Kentucky A student, Matthew Ward, bought a self-cocking pistol in the morning, went to school and killed schoolmaster Mr. Butler for excessively punishing his brother the day before. Even though he shot the schoolmaster point blank in front of his classmates, he was acquitted.[2]
    • June 8, 1867: New York City At Public School No. 18, a 13 year old boy brought a pistol loaded and capped, without the knowledge of his parents or school-teachers, and shot and injured a classmate.[3]
    • December 22, 1868: Chattanooga, Tennessee A boy who refused to be whipped and left school, returned, with his brother and a friend, the next day to seek revenge on his teacher. • June 23, 1871: Lagrange, Indiana Miss Anna Dwight was shot to death in front of her students by a rejected suitor[5]

An article from the New York Times reads, Another "Jesse James" Gang - Word was brought to the Fifth Police Station to-night that a number of boys were using the Concord-street School-house for some unknown purpose, and a posse of officers was sent to investigate. The gang scattered at the approach of the police, and in their flight one drew a revolver and fired at Officer Rowan, without effect, however. William Nangle, age 14, and Sidney Duncan, age 12, were captured, but the other five or six escaped, among them the one who did the shooting. The boys refused to disclose the object of their meeting, but it is thought that another "Jesse James" organization has been broken up.[8]
    • March 15, 1884: Gainesville, Georgia In the middle of the day, a group of very drunk Jackson County farmers left the Jug Tavern drinking and shooting their revolvers as they headed down the street driving people into their homes. Heath High School shooting

The Heath High School shooting occurred at Heath High School in West Paducah, Kentucky, United States, on Monday, December 1, 1997. Fourteen-year-old Michael Carneal opened fire on a group of praying students, killing three and injuring five more.

    The shooting

On December 1, 1997 Carneal wrapped a shotgun and a rifle in a blanket and took them to school, passing them off as an art project he was working on. He also carried a loaded Ruger MK II .22-caliber pistol in his backpack. Carneal rode to school with his sister and arrived at approximately 7:45 a.m. When he arrived, he inserted earplugs and took the pistol out of his bag. He fired eight rounds in fast succession at a youth prayer group. Three girls died while hospitalized and five others were wounded.

A member of the prayer group, Benjamin Strong, testified that Carneal dropped the gun of his own accord when he was finished.[1] Carneal placed his pistol on the ground and surrendered to the school principal, Bill Bond. After dropping the gun, Carneal said to Strong: "Kill me, please. I can't believe I did that."

    Victims

    Deceased

    • Nicole Hadley was a fourteen-year-old freshman. Nicole was kept alive until 10:00pm the evening of the shooting. Nicole played in the school band and on the freshman basketball team. She was a member of the Heartland Baptist Worship Center and the Heartland Baptist Youth Group. Her family had moved to Paducah from Nebraska the year before the shooting. Her parents received praise for their decision to donate Hadley's organs, a decision they said their daughter supported. President Clinton cited the family's "courageous decision" in his Proclamation 7083 on National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week in 1998.[3]
    • Jessica James was a seventeen-year-old student. Jessica died in surgery at Western Baptist Hospital Monday afternoon. She was a member of the marching band and attended Lovelaceville Baptist Church.
    • Kayce Steger was a fifteen-year-old sophomore. Steger died at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah about 45 minutes after the shooting. Kayce played clarinet in the school band, played on the softball team, and was a member of the Agape Club. She was an honor student, worked at Subway, and attended 12th Street Baptist Church. She was a member of Law Enforcement Explorers Post 111 and hoped to be a police officer. Her parents reported that Michael Carneal had asked her out on a date a little over a month before the shooting

    Wounded

    • Shelley Schaberg, 17 at the time, was described by the principal as the school’s best female athlete. Voted Miss Heath High School by the senior class, Shelley was homecoming queen. Though her injuries from the shooting prevented her from playing basketball, her college honored her basketball scholarship and she went on to play college soccer.[4]
    • Melissa “Missy” Jenkins, age 15 at the time, was president of the Future Homemakers of America. She was paralyzed from the chest down in the shooting. Missy has appeared on numerous national and local television shows, talked to newspaper reporters and is appearing in two TV commercials for Channel One News, an educational channel that reaches schools throughout the country. A video interview of her was featured on the home page of YouTube.com on April 22, 2007.[5]
    • Kelly Hard Alsip,[6] 16 at the time, was a member of the softball team and the Future Homemakers of America. She transferred to the local Catholic school the year after the shooting.[7]
    • Hollan Holm, age 14 at the time, was a member of the Academic Team, the Spanish Club, and the Science Olympiad. In his valedictory speech at the class of 2001 graduation, he reminded his class that they had lost not one but two class members on December 1, 1997: Nicole Hadley and Michael Carneal.[7] Holm has been involved with an organization that urges students to speak up if they know of threats against schools or students.[5]
    • Craig Keene, age 15 at the time, was a member of the Agape Club, the band, and the basketball team.

    Trial

In October 1998, Judge Jeff Hines accepted a plea of guilty from Michael Carneal, due to his mental illness. Under a plea arrangement, the judge agreed to accept the pleas on condition that Carneal would receive a life sentence with the possibility of parole in 25 years (2023). According to prosecutor Tim Kaltenbach, the plea allows Carneal to receive mental health treatment during imprisonment as long as this is necessary for him or until he is released. Carneal was transported to the Kentucky State Reformatory in La Grange when he turned 18 where he remains. Prior to that he was held in at Northern Kentucky Youth Development Center, a Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice facility.[8] Carneal's Kentucky Department of Corrections (KDOC) ID is 151127. Carneal began serving time with KDOC on June 1, 2001.[9]
    I
n 2007, Carneal filed an appeal claiming that he was too mentally ill to plead guilty in 1998 to the shooting at Heath High School and asked the Kentucky Supreme Court for a re-trial. Prosecutors appealed and the Kentucky Supreme Court set up a hearing that was scheduled for September 11, 2008. The Court's ruling would decide whether to grant Carneal a new competency hearing and a trial. The Kentucky Supreme Court rejected his request and Carneal will continue to serve out his sentence.

    Possible motives

According to reports, Carneal had been bullied by other students and suffered from severe paranoia. His paranoia was manifested in habits such as covering up vents and windows while in bathrooms, because he believed he was being watched. Following the shooting, Carneal was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He has been hospitalized several times since the start of his incarceration due to psychosis, and takes medication for this condition.

Weeks before the incident, Carneal stole a .38-caliber handgun from his parents' room and attempted to sell it. A student took the gun, threatening to tell police if Carneal did not give it to him. Additionally, Carneal had told students that "something big is going to happen on Monday" but no one took him seriously.

    Lawsuit

In early 1999, the parents of three victims represented by Jack Thompson filed a $33 million lawsuit against two Internet pornography sites, several computer game companies and makers and distributors of the 1994 film Natural Born Killers and the 1995 film The Basketball Diaries. They claimed that media violence inspired Carneal and therefore should be held responsible.[10]

The case was dismissed in 2001. The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that it was "simply too far a leap from shooting characters on a video screen to shooting people in a classroom."[11] Both Thompson[12] and 79th United States Attorney General John Ashcroft claimed Carneal's proficient marksmanship was due to practice in violent video games.

    Stephen King

Carneal had in his locker at the time a copy of Stephen King's novel Rage (first published in 1977 under the pseudonym Richard Bachman). After this shooting King requested his publisher to allow it to go out of print, fearing that it might inspire similar tragedies. Rage for a time continued to be available in the United Kingdom in The Bachman Books collection, although the collection now no longer contains Rage.[14] King's other Bachman novels are available in the US in separate volumes.

Carneal now does some of his own writing, mostly writing short stories. Some of his art work and poems can be seen on murderabilia websites.

    Popular culture

    • Christian singer and Heath alumnus Steven Curtis Chapman wrote and dedicated the song "With Hope", from his 1999 album Speechless, to the victims of the shooting.
    • A self-titled album put out by the band A Cross Between also featured a song dedicated to Nicole Hadley, titled Nicole Hadley's Heart.
    • Eva Khatchadourian, the narrator of Lionel Shriver's novel [We Need to Talk About Kevin], discusses the Paducah school shooting.

Arizona sheriff launches patrols outside schools

The sheriff for metropolitan Phoenix has launched a plan to have as many as 500 armed volunteers patrol areas just outside schools in an effort to guard against shootings like month's attack at a Connecticut elementary school that left 26 people dead.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office said Wednesday that the patrols were launched earlier this week at 59 schools in unincorporated areas and communities that pay his agency for police services.

Arpaio hopes to have as many as 400 posse volunteers and another 100 volunteers known as reserve deputies take part in the patrols.

The plan from the sheriff known for immigration enforcement and housing jail inmates in canvas tents has led some longtime critics to say Arpaio's latest effort is meant to grab headlines and won't be sustained over the long term.

"Why would people complain about my posse being in front of schools to act as prevention?" Arpaio asked, noting that he wants the patrols to last throughout the remainder of the school year.

The sheriff said school shootings in Connecticut and elsewhere and last month's arrest of an Arizona student accused of planning an attack at her high school led to his decision to launch the patrols.

The volunteers, dressed in uniforms and driving patrol vehicles, won't go onto school grounds unless they spot danger and won't sit in stationary spots. Instead, they'll patrol several schools as part of their driving routes.

Andrew Sanchez, a town council member in Guadalupe, said he doesn't want the sheriff's posse members patrolling outside schools in his town. The community of about 6,000 spends $1.2 million a year to have Arpaio's office provide police protection.

"We are paying him to have certified deputies here, not to bring a circus and not to use our town as a political platform," Sanchez said.

He predicted the volunteer patrols would disappear once media attention had faded.

Distrust of Arpaio in Guadalupe runs deep after the sheriff's deputies poured into the town during one of his first trademark immigration sweeps in April 2008.

During the crackdowns, deputies surge into an area of a city - in some cases, heavily Latino areas - to seek out traffic violators and arrest other offenders over several days.

Arpaio announced his plans Wednesday on the grounds of an elementary school, saying he wants the patrols publicized.

"I want everyone to know about it for the deterrence effect," he said.

The announcement came on the same day that the top Democrat in the Arizona House put forth a proposal to triple funding for school resource officers, add money for mental health treatment and require background checks on all buyers at gun shows.

Arpaio said no taxpayer money would be spent on the patrols and volunteers will be supervised by radio or phone by deputies.

Joselyn Wells, the mother of three children at a school in suburban Anthem, where Arpaio's posse members have begun patrolling, said she was excited to hear about the initiative.

"A lot of people sit around and watch these things happen, watch key signs and no one wants to do anything about it," she said. "Nobody wants conflict, nobody wants to be out in the limelight. And he doesn't care. He wants to do the right thing."

Arpaio has relied heavily on his posse, which consist of about 3,000 unpaid civilians, including action-film star Steven Seagal.

They assist deputies in duties such as providing free police protection at malls during the holidays, directing traffic at wreck scenes and transporting to jail the people who are arrested in immigration patrols. One group of posse members conducted an examination into the authenticity of President Barack Obama's birth certificate.

Members wear uniforms and can get authorized to carry a gun after training, though only 400 can actually carry guns. They can make arrests only at the direction of a deputy sheriff. Posse operations generally don't receive taxpayer money and instead are funded through contributions and dues paid by posse members.

The reserve deputies who will join posse members in the school patrols have all the training and powers of a regular law enforcement officer but aren't paid for their police work.

Monica Allread, spokeswoman for the Tempe Elementary School District, which includes an elementary school in Guadalupe, shied away from commenting on Arpaio's new plan. But she said the district aims to improve safety at its schools.

"Anyone who wants to help us keep the kids safe, that's a good thing to us," she said.

2 suspects in custody after shooting at Lone Star College in Houston

A shooting on a Texas community college campus injured three people Tuesday as officials placed the campus on lockdown, officials said.

Harris County Sheriff's Maj. Armando Tello said authorities had detained a person of interest. He did not provide any details about the people who were wounded, such as whether they were students or included the person who was arrested.

Fox News has learned that a second person turned themselves in. Authorities had said earlier that they thought there could be a second shooter, according to a law enforcement official in Washington who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the ongoing case.

The school's official Twitter feed said the shooting was between two people and that the situation was under control. It had issued an alert on its website earlier, telling students and faculty to take immediate shelter or avoid the campus.

Aerial footage from local television stations showed police cars and ambulances parked on the Lone Star College System campus about 20 miles north of downtown Houston. Emergency personnel could be seen tending to people on stretchers, while others ran from a building led by officers.

Mark Smith, spokesman for the Harris County Emergency Corps, said four people were taken to two hospitals. He said at least two had gunshot wounds, and one appeared to have had a heart attack related to the shooting. He said one was in critical condition.

Students said they were studying or waiting for classes to start about 12:30 p.m. when they heard gunfire.

"I didn't think they were shots," said Daniel Flores, 19. "It sounded like someone was kicking a door."

He was in a second-floor tutoring lab with about 60 people. Once they realized the sound was gunfire, they fled to the nearby student services center, where authorities kept them for about 30 minutes before letting them go, Flores said.

Cody Harris, 20, said he was in a classroom with about six or seven other students waiting for a psychology class to start when he heard eight shots. He and other students looked at each other, said "I guess we should get out of here," and fled.

"I was just worried about getting out," Harris said. "I called my grandmother and asked her to pick me up."

The shooting comes one month after a gunman attacked an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., killing 20 children and heightening security concerns at campuses across the country. In Texas, several school districts have either implemented or are considering a plan to allow faculty to carry guns on campus. The Texas Legislature this year may also debate a bill that would allow guns on college campuses.

The Lone Star College System has an enrollment of 90,000 students and six college campuses, according to its website. Its programs in Harris County include training to be a paramedic.

Mark Zaragosa said he had just come out of an EMT class when he saw two people who were injured and stopped to help them. Officers had not yet arrived, he said.

"The two people that I took care of had just minor injuries," Zaragosa told KHOU. "One gentleman had a gunshot to the knee and the (other) actually had an entry wound to the lower buttocks area."

Keisha Cohn, 27, who also is studying to be a paramedic, said she was inside a building about 50 feet away from where the shots were fired. She heard "no less than five" shots and started running.

She fled to the learning center, which houses computers and study areas. Eventually, a deputy showed up and escorted people out, she said. She left her car on the campus, which was evacuated and closed for the rest of the day.

Court tosses life sentence in Fla. school slaying

Michael Hernandez, who as a mentally troubled youth was convicted of stabbing his best friend to death in a middle school restroom, will get a new sentencing hearing after an appeals court ruled Wednesday that his mandatory life sentence was unconstitutional.

The 3rd District Court of Appeal ruled there was no choice but to toss out Hernandez's sentence because he was a juvenile when the killed Jaime Gough in 2004. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled last year that juveniles cannot face mandatory life sentences with no possibility of parole, even for murder.

A judge could still impose a second life sentence on Hernandez, the appeals court said, but the Supreme Court decision "requires the sentencer to take into account how children are different, and how those differences counsel against irrevocably sentencing them to a lifetime in prison."

"The sentencing court must be free to impose a lesser sentence when the defendant's youth or the circumstances of the crime so indicate," the appeals court ruled.

Gough and Hernandez were both 14 when the crime was committed. Gough was stabbed 42 times in the restroom at Southwood Middle School, located in a Miami suburb, and Hernandez then calmly went to his eighth-grade class, according to trial testimony.

Hernandez, who medical experts say is a paranoid schizophrenic and suffers delusions, confessed to the crime and trial evidence showed he had a hit list of planned victims, including Gough and another 13-year-old boy he had tried earlier to lure into the restroom. Still, a jury in 2008 rejected Hernandez's insanity defense. The trial was moved to Orlando because of heavy media attention.

Juvenile offenders cannot get the death penalty under a previous U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

Hernandez attorney Richard Rosenbaum said he will ask at a new hearing for Hernandez, now 23, to receive a sentence that includes mental health treatment and far less prison time. Hernandez is currently serving time at the Columbia Correctional Institution Annex in Lake City.

"There's a definite chance that he could get a sentence that would give him the help he needs rather than simply punishment," Rosenbaum said.

Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said her office was reviewing the decision "to understand its impact on this case and future cases." She noted that Hernandez's convictions were upheld, including one for first-degree murder for Gough's murder.

"This decision forces the Gough family to relive the brutal murder of their son Jaime while a new sentencing hearing will allow Hernandez's attorneys to present evidence in an effort to lessen his sentence," she said.

A new judge could still sentence Hernandez to the same life plus 30 years prison term he had been serving. The appeals court upheld Hernandez's murder and attempted murder convictions and the decision that he was mentally competent to stand trial.

Since the 2012 Supreme Court decision, appeals courts around Florida have been grappling with how to apply it. The Florida appeals judges noted Wednesday that the Hernandez appeal was still pending when the high court invalidated mandatory life sentences for juveniles, which made their decision almost automatic.

The ruling, however, notes that Florida has not changed its laws regarding life sentences for juveniles and courts have split on whether the Supreme Court decision should apply retroactively. Some Florida judges have suggested changing the law so that juveniles convicted of murder could become eligible for parole after 25 years or to allow for sentences of between 10 years and life.
