    Saudi Arabia Executions - 2013

    Syrian beheaded for drug trafficking

Saudi authorities on Tuesday beheaded a Syrian convicted of trafficking a large amount of narcotic pills, the interior ministry said, in the first execution in the kingdom this year.

Mohammed Darwish was arrested “as he was trafficking a large amount of narcotic pills into the kingdom,” the ministry said in a statement carried by official news agency SPA.

He was beheaded in Al Jawf province, in the kingdom’s north.

Last year, the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom beheaded 76 people, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under sharia, or Islamic law.

Saudi Arabia beheads Sri Lankan maid for murdering baby

SAUDI Arabia beheaded a Sri Lankan maid on Wednesday after she was convicted of murdering her employer's baby, the interior ministry announced, despite calls for a stay of execution.

Rizana Nafeek smothered the infant to death after an argument with the child's mother, her employer, the ministry statement carried by the official SPA news agency said.

She was beheaded in the Dawadmi province near the capital Riyadh.

Human Rights Watch had on Tuesday urged Saudi King Abdullah and the interior ministry to halt Nafeek's execution.

The New York-based watchdog said that Nafeek, who was only 17 when the incident occurred in 2005, had retracted "a confession that she said was made under duress, and says that the baby died in a choking accident while drinking from a bottle."

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa had sent an appeal to King Abdullah on Sunday "requesting a stay of the execution until a settlement can be reached between the baby's family and a Saudi reconciliation committee," said HRW.

HRW "opposes the death penalty in all circumstances because of its inherent cruelty and finality," it said. "Given the possibility of mistakes in any criminal justice system, innocent people may be executed."

This is the second execution of the year in Saudi Arabia after a Syrian was beheaded on Tuesday for drug trafficking.

Last year, the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom beheaded 76 people, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. HRW put the number at 69.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under its strict version of sharia, or Islamic law.

For me the reason for death is bogus. Babys fed from a bottle puke not suffocate. Anybody who's had a child knows this. If the kid was older and was on solids it would be believable.

The under age excuse is bogus. They do not enforce registration of births so any date given unless supplied by a hospital is open to doubt.

Saudi executed after 32 years on death row

    Last Updated : Wednesday, February 06, 2013 1:15 AM

The oldest prisoner in the Kingdom was executed on Tuesday. Abdullah Fandi Al-Shammary, a Saudi, killed another citizen 32 years ago by repeatedly hitting him on the head with a big stick after a brawl broke out among a group of young men living in his neighborhood.

While defending himself, Al-Shammary picked up a stick off the ground and hit his victim, eventually killing him. He was jailed at the age of 21.

After five years, he was found guilty of manslaughter and he paid the blood money to secure his release. He celebrated his release and got married.

Two years after his release Al-Shammary was rearrested when the victim’s family appealed and he was put on trial again.

This time the court sentenced him to death. He was executed at the age of 54 after spending 32 years in prison, the majority of which he spent appealing his case.

Many people on Twitter sympathized with his case and sent 50,000 tweets on the morning of his execution. He memorized the Holy Qur’an during his prison term and was taken 17 times to the execution square.

Some tweets said that he led the prisoners during Fajr prayer on Tuesday and he bade them farewell with a smile, knowing that this was going to be his last prayer.

Other prisoners were crying and hugging him, said the tweeters.

Although Prince Abdulaziz Bin Saad, Deputy Emir of Hail, tried to convince the victim’s son to forgive Al-Shammary, the son insisted that he be executed.

Al-Shammary is survived by his wife and a two-year-old daughter.
