George Zimmerman’s Brother Urges Media to Brand ‘Black Teens’ As Killers

    From the Altanta Blackstar

The aunt of De’Marquise Elkins said the 17-year-old was eating breakfast with her when a 13-month-old baby was shot in the head in Brunswick, Georgia, in a crime that has shocked the nation, but that didn’t stop police from arresting the teen for murder.

According to Katrina Freeman, Elkins came to her house at 8:15 a.m., about an hour before the killing of toddler Antonio Santiago, and she made him grits, eggs and sausage for breakfast. After he ate, she said he accompanied her and her children when they left the house at about 11:30 a.m. to run errands.

“He was with us the whole time,” Freeman xzic. “There is no doubt in my mind that he is innocent.”

But Brunswick police spokesman Todd Rhodes insinuated that authorities had evidence disputing Freeman’s alibi.

“That’s what she’s saying, but the evidence we’re looking at says something else,” Rhodes said, though he would not elaborate.

Elkins was arrested, along with an unidentified 14-year-old male that police said was his accomplice, after Sherry West, the slain baby’s mother, picked him out of a photo lineup of 24 mugshots police brought to her Friday.

She wept and nodded when a reporter showed her the photo of Elkins taken when he was booked into the Glynn County jail Friday.

“He killed my baby, and he shot me, too,” she said, according to the Associated Press.
Meanwhile, Robert Zimmerman Jr., brother of accused murderer George Zimmerman, didn’t help George’s cause when he sent out a tweet showing side-by-side pictures of Trayvon Martin—the teen Zimmerman killed—and De’Marquise Elkins with the two-17-year-olds flipping their middle fingers at the camera. The tweet was accompanied by the caption, “A picture speaks a thousand words. . . Any questions?”
Earlier in the day, Zimmerman Jr. had sent out other tweets comparing Martin and Elkins:West: “Do you want me to shoot your baby?” #TrayvonMartin to #GeorgeZimmerman : You’re gonna die tonight Motherf**ker”
“Lib media shld ask if what these2 black teens did 2 a woman&baby is the reason ppl think blacks mightB risky”

According to Sherry West’s account, she was pushing her baby in his stroller as she walked home from the post office Thursday morning when two teenagers approached her. The older teen, with a younger boy behind him, asked her for money, she said. When West said she had no money, the teen drew a gun and said: “Do you want me to kill your baby?”

She said he opened fire, shooting her in the leg, with another bullet grazing her left ear, then she watched helplessly as the gunman shot her son in the face.

At her apartment Saturday, a reporter watched as she filled several bags with her son’s clothes and diapers to donate to charity. West said she wanted prosecutors to pursue the death penalty.

“My baby will never be back again,” West said, crying. “He took an innocent life. I want his life, too.”

She said her 18-year-old son was stabbed to death in an altercation in New Jersey, but prosecutors did not file any charges because they ruled the her son was stabbed in self-defense.

Police in Brunswick said they are still searching for the gun and that no eyewitnesses have come forward.

Police released emergency call recordings from callers who said they heard gunshots and saw West take her son out of his stroller, lay him on the ground and try to revive him using CPR.

“Yes, I heard the shots. Somebody shot this child,” said a sobbing caller, who told the operator there were three shots fired. “She’s got him on the ground. Please, we need everything we can get.”

When the emergency operators asked the callers if the boy was breathing, a man finally answers, “No, the baby’s not breathing.” He says the child was shot “right between the eyes.”

A woman can be heard screaming in the background. Then the police sirens drown out her cries.

Sabrina Elkins, the teen’s older sister, said police arrested him as he came to her home Friday.

“The police came pointing a Taser at him, telling him to get on the ground,” she said. “He said, ’What are you getting me for? Can you tell me what I did?”’

She said he had returned to Brunswick a couple of months ago after living in Atlanta for a while. She said he wasn’t enrolled in high school, but had been taking classes to earn his high school equivalency diploma.

“He couldn’t have done that to a little baby,” Sabrina Elkins told the AP. “My brother has a good heart.”

Lawyer says 17-year-old not guilty in Georgia baby killing

The lawyer for one of the Georgia teenagers suspected in the shooting death of a baby who was in his stroller on a walk with his mother said Monday his client is "absolutely" not guilty.

"My client is absolutely, 1,000-percent not guilty," public defender Kevin Gough, who represents 17-year-old De'Marquise Elkins, told The Associated Press. He made the comments Monday, while preparing for Elkins' first court appearance on a murder charge. It was scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday.

Elkins and another 14-year-old boy are charged with murder in Thursday's shooting of the baby, Antonio Santiago, and the wounding of his mother, Sherry West.

The 14-year-old appeared in court earlier Monday. The Associated Press generally doesn't identify juvenile offenders. Elkins is charged as an adult.

At Monday morning's hearing, the 14-year-old came into the courtroom shackled and wearing a baggy orange jumpsuit, The Florida Times-Union reported.

He glanced at the few members of the media allowed into the courtroom for the initial appearance as he shuffled to a lectern facing Glynn County Magistrate Tim Barton.

The magistrate told the boy he couldn't set a bond because only Superior Court judges can do so in murder cases.

"I'm going to see that you get a lawyer immediately," Barton told the boy.

The 14-year-old was in the eighth grade at Glynn Middle School before his arrest, said Jim Weidhaas, a spokesman for the Glynn County school system.

Elkins was last a student in the system in October 2011 when he left Ombudsman, an outsourced alternative school program, Weidhaas said.

The baby's mother said she was walking home Thursday morning when two boys confronted her and one of them opened fire. Police say she was shot in the leg, and her baby was shot in face.

Gough said he has demanded a bond hearing and filed a request for a speedy trial for Elkins.

"We look forward to our day in court," he said.

Ga. city official arrested in slain baby case

A coastal Georgia city official was arrested on charges of obstructing law enforcement and influencing a witness in the case involving a 13-month-old boy who was fatally shot last week.

David Tucker — an attorney for Brunswick city councilman and mayor pro tem James Henry Brooks — told WTLV that his client was arrested for stepping between police and the mother of 17-year-old suspect De'Marquise Elkins when police tried speaking with her during a court appearance Monday.

Brooks — who also faces racketeering charges in Camden County — was being held Thursday night in the Glynn County jail on $1,256 bond for obstruction. He is also being held without bond on the charge of influencing a witness, sheriff's officials said.

Brooks' arrest came as investigators were looking at a possible gang tie in the slaying of a Georgia toddler. They said Thursday that a bullet used in the shooting had been recovered.

More search warrants were executed Wednesday night, though Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering didn't say specifically what evidence might have been found.

The chief did reveal Thursday that investigators have recovered the bullet they believe was fired in the killing of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago as his mother strolled him down a sidewalk on March 21 in Brunswick, a town on Georgia's coast. The bullet and a .22-caliber handgun, which was found submerged in a pond two miles from the crime scene, are now being analyzed at a crime lab.

Elkins and another teenager have been charged as adults with murder and other counts.

When asked directly whether it's possible the shooting was a part of a gang initiation, Doering wouldn't go that far, saying investigators are exploring "whether gang involvement is part of this."

Police are concerned about the safety of witnesses in the emotionally charged case, the chief said. However, he pleaded with people who have information to come forward, and to put aside their fears in the interest of justice.

"We know there are still witnesses out there, people who have information," Doering said.

An indictment returned this week accuses Elkins of shooting the toddler in the face.

Elkins' attorney, Kevin Gough, has said his client is "absolutely, 1,000 percent not guilty."

A second suspect, 15-year-old Dominique Lang, is also charged with murder, though prosecutors say they believe it was Elkins who shot the child and wounded his mother in an attempted robbery.

The police chief said attempted robbery charges also were filed but nothing was taken during the killing. It still appears the slaying was random, Brunswick police said.

The few details contained in the indictment seem to back up the story that the slain baby's mother, Sherry West, has repeated to numerous reporters: She was pushing her baby in a stroller when two youths approached asking for money. West says when she refused, the older teen drew a gun and shot her in the leg before shooting her son in the head.

District Attorney Jackie Johnson said she would not seek the death penalty against either suspect because Georgia law doesn't allow capital punishment for defendants charged with crimes committed before they were 18. Elkins was also indicted on two counts in a second attempted robbery and shooting that happened 10 days before the baby was slain.

The suspect's mother, Karimah Elkins, and older sister, Sabrina Elkins, were charged with evidence tampering. The indictment says they threw the revolver that police suspect was used in the shooting into a saltwater pond where investigators recovered it Tuesday.

Karimah Elkins and the suspect's aunt, Katrina Elkins, were also charged with making false statements to police.

Suspect in Brunswick baby murder denied bond

A judge denied bond for De'Marquis Elkins today. The 17-year-old is accused of shooting and killing 13-month-old Antonio Santiago last month.

Dominique Lang, 15, is also accused of murder. He will not be in court this morning. Action News spoke with Lang's attorney who says she believes he will be safer in jail. She contends Lang had no part in the shooting and rather was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The defense attorney for Elkins has petitioned the judge to call several witnesses at the hearing today. Action News has learned that list includes Antonio Santiago's father, Louis Santiago.

Ga. judge says he wants trial before year ends for teenager charged with fatally shooting baby

A judge said Friday he wants a trial before the end of the year for a teenager charged with fatally shooting a 13-month-old baby in the face during a street robbery two weeks ago.

Glynn County Superior Court Judge Stephen Kelley didn't give a tentative trial date for 17-year-old De'Marquis Elkins. District Attorney Jackie Johnson told the judge she thought investigators would have evidence ready to share with Elkins' defense lawyers next month. The judge scheduled the suspect's next hearing for May 24.

"I do expect we will try this case by the end of this year," Kelley told the attorneys at the end of a bond hearing Friday morning.

The judge denied Elkins' request for bond, saying he was concerned the suspect might flee if he was released.

Elkins faces life in prison if convicted of malice murder in the March 21 slaying of Antonio Santiago. Police say the boy was shot in a robbery attempt. His mother, Sherry West, has said she was pushing her son in his stroller a few blocks from her apartment when two youths approached asking for money. When she refused, she said, one of them drew a gun and shot her in the leg before shooting her baby in the face.

An indictment last week identified Elkins as the person who pulled the trigger. Another teenager, 15-year-old Dominique Lang, has been charged with murder as an accomplice.

"Mr. Elkins is certainly disappointed with the decision" to deny him bond, said Kevin Gough, the suspect's defense attorney. "But he is also every encouraged by the speedy trial schedule the court is considering."

Gough had urged the judge to consider bond for Elkins based on his lack of any prior felony record, though Elkins pleaded guilty last year to misdemeanor charges of marijuana possession and giving a false name to a police officer.

The suspect's 78-year-old great grandfather, McKinley Elkins Jr., took the witness stand and promised the judge he would personally look after his great grandson if he was released from jail pending trial.

"I truly believe, deep down in my heart, that he will be a gentleman from this day forward," the elder Elkins said.

But just how well the great grandfather knew Elkins was called into question when he was unable to tell District Attorney Jackie Johnson where the teenager went to school, whether he had any tattoos, or even where he lived.

Roderic Nohilly, a Glynn County police detective, told the judge Elkins had several tattoos — a teardrop by his right eye, his mother's name on his right arm, a skull on his abdomen and the words "Thug Life" across his chest.

Nohilly said Elkins' tattoos contained symbols affiliated with gangs. Gough argued that Elkins' tattoos aren't proof that he's a gang member and said it's unlikely Elkins even knows what the symbols are supposed to mean.

"Are you familiar with the word 'poser,'" Gough asked the detective. "There are quite a few young men who run around town trying to pretend they're something they are not, aren't there?"

Nohilly said he agreed there were. "Some of them carrying guns," he said.

Tattoos often "mean" something to the wearer and they are visible symbols to others.
I have read that the tear dripping from the eye tattoo means I have killed, (triumph) someone I know has been killed, (sorrow) a tough life, jail life, (self dramatisation).

Anyone care to expand on this ?
I don't think someone should be convicted for having tattoos but it does give an insight into the person so inked.

Gag order challenged in Brunswick baby murder case

The attorney representing accused baby killer, DeMarquise Elkins, held news conferences following his client's arrest last month, inviting the media to his office to answer any questions we had about the murder of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago. He told us then that 17-year-old Elkins is innocent.

"Marky Elkins is himself a child. His favorite TV shows are cartoons," said Public Defender Kevin Gough.

The state took issue with those news conferences, saying in documents released this week that Gough is determined to try this case in the media. As a result, it has requested a gag order to restrict attorneys involved in this case from speaking with the media.

Now, the defense is firing back, calling the gag order a "pointless exercise." New documents obtained by Action News show defense attorney's are arguing it's a violation of the First Amendment to prevent everyone from talking about this case.

"The defense does not believe Sherry West's story, but after reviewing the authorities, defense counsel is persuaded that Sherry West has a constitutional right to tell her story," said Gough in his response to the judge's order.

Gough says West's willingness to talk about her baby's murder is what's led to unprecedented media coverage. It's garnered 4.5 million hits on Google, said Gough. He says any statements he has made has been to counter prejudicial pre-trial publicity.

That said, the defense has said it will not hold any more news conferences

The decision about the gag order now lies with the judge.
