Shawn Eric Ford, Jr. - Ohio

Shawn Eric Ford, Jr. is accused of the murders of prominent attorney Jeff Schobert, 56, and his wife, Margaret, 59.

Bond set at $2 million for Shawn Ford charged with murder of New Franklin couple

The 18-year-old arrested in connection with the deaths of New Franklin couple, Jeffrey and Margaret Schobert, appeared in Barberton Municipal Court Friday morning.

Shawn Ford Jr.’s bond was set at $2 million. His arraignment is scheduled for April 10 at 1 p.m.

As police escorted Ford into court Friday morning, NewsChannel5 reporter Bob Jones asked him about the charges against him.

"I'm not talking about it right now," Ford said. When asked if he murdered the couple, Ford responded, "Get out of my face with that."

Ford, the boyfriend of the couple’s daughter Chelsea, is facing seven charges: two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of aggravated burglary and one count of grand theft, all felonies.

Also today, Akron police filed a felonious assault charge against Ford for the March 23 beating of Chelsea Schobert.

She was stabbed and suffered a skull fracture after an attack inside an Akron home on Andrus Street. She remains a patient at Akron Children's Hospital.

Police originally charged Jamayne Ruiz, 24, for the attack. Akron police have dismissed the charge against him and he was released from the Summit County Jail last night.

According to investigators, construction workers found the Schoberts dead in the bedroom of their Rex Lake Drive home in New Franklin Tuesday afternoon.

The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office said the autopsy revealed the two died from blunt impacts to the head and police said Ford used a sledgehammer to kill the couple.

Prosecutors may seek the death penalty for the murders.

Boy, 14, pleads not guilty to killing Ohio couple

A 14-year-old suspected accomplice has pleaded not guilty in the sledgehammer deaths of a prominent attorney and his wife in Ohio.

The boy entered the plea Monday in Akron in Summit County Juvenile Court in the deaths last week of Jeffrey and Margaret Schobert.

Eighteen-year-old Shawn Ford Jr. of Akron, who dated the couple's teenage daughter, also has been charged with murder. He's due in court Wednesday.

Ford also is charged with stabbing the daughter two weeks ago. Akron police say a man arrested earlier in the stabbing attack has been cleared.

A possible homicide motive has emerged. The Akron Beacon Journal (http://bit.ly/16IeTJJ ) reports police believe the parents were unhappy with Ford's relationship with their daughter and stopped him from visiting her at the hospital.

    Ford arraigned on murder charges

Appearing by video from the Summit County Jail, Shawn E. Ford, Jr., 18, was arraigned before Barberton Municipal Court Judge Christine Croce on two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of aggravated burglary.

Ford is accused of the April 2 double homicide of New Franklin residents Jeffrey and Margaret Schobert.

Ford's attorney, Jon Sinn, had little comment, saying he is waiting for more information on the case. "I haven't had any contact with police yet, and I want to see what they have to say." Regarding Ford's current state of mind, Sinn said he "is at a loss. He understands he is in a very difficult situation, and he understands this could become a death penalty case."

Sinn said he wasn't clear on the relationship between Ford and 14-year-old Jamal Vaughn, who has also been charged in the murder. "I don't think they're related. I think they're acquaintances," he said.

Croce entered a technical not guilty plea for Ford before referring the case to the grand jury April 15.

911 call released in New Franklin double murder reveals Schoberts feared they'd be killed

A construction worker and family friend who called 911 reporting a double murder in New Franklin says the couple feared they’d be killed.

Caller: We’ve got two murders…we thought they weren’t here this morning. I just went into the bathroom and I walked by the bedroom and Peg was laying on the ground and Jeff was on the bed."

    Dispatcher: Are they responding?

Caller: They’re not responding, no. We thought they were at the hospital with their daughter. Oh my God!

Earlier this week, New Franklin detectives released a possible motive in the brutal murders of Jeffrey and Margaret Schobert. They believe Shawn Ford Jr., the 18-year-old accused of killing them, was angry because the Schoberts were trying to keep him away from their daughter, Chelsea, and wouldn’t let him visit her in the hospital.

Caller: Jeff was just talking about this with me last night because he was worried something like this would happen because his daughter identified the gang bangers that stabbed her.

Chelsea was beaten and stabbed on March 23 at a party on Andrus Street. She remains at Akron Children’s Hospital recovering from a skull fracture.

Charges were first filed against Jamayne Ruiz in the case, but were dropped on April 5 and filed against Ford.

A 14-year-old charged in connection to the Schobert murders pleaded not guilty in court on Monday. Prosecutors are pushing he be tried as an adult.

The Schoberts are being laid to rest on Friday.

Akron man indicted in murders of Jeffrey Schobert and Margaret Schobert

An 18-year-old Akron man was indicted on murder charges Friday in the April 2 deaths of Jeffrey and Margaret Schobert in their New Franklin home and on lesser charges in the March 23 assault on the couple's daughter.

Shawn Ford Jr., faces the death penalty if convicted of murder. He was charged with five counts of aggravated murder; two counts of aggravated robbery; and one count each of burglary, theft and felonious assault.

"The murders of Jeffrey and Margaret Schobert were particularly brutal," said Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh. "Shawn Ford is accused of killing two people, both of whom were, by all accounts, kind and generous people who treated him with the utmost respect. My office will see that justice is served for these horrific crimes."

Ford is accused of beating Jeffrey Schobert, 56, and his wife, Margaret, 59, to death in their bedroom. Their bodies were found by a construction worker who was remodeling the house.

Police told the Akron Beacon Journal that Ford was Chelsea Schobert's boyfriend.

He is being held in Summit County Jail on $2 million bond.

A 14-year-old Akron boy is in the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center charged with aggravated murder and complicity in the deaths.

Lawyer: Insanity plea to come in Ohio killings

An 18-year-old man charged with killing a prominent Ohio attorney and his wife in their home with a sledgehammer will plead not guilty by reason of insanity, his attorney said in court on Wednesday.

Shawn Ford Jr. of Akron appeared by video from jail but did not speak at a hearing in the Summit County Court of Common Pleas.

Ford is charged with aggravated murder in the killing of 56-year-old Jeffrey Schobert and his wife, 59-year-old Margaret.

The couple were found dead in their home in New Franklin on April 2; they had been beaten to death with a sledgehammer.

The Akron Beacon Journal reported that Ford's attorney, Don Hicks, said at Wednesday's hearing that Ford was declining to enter a plea in the case, but that at some point, would plead not guilty by reason of insanity.

Magistrate Kandi O'Connor entered a plea of not guilty on Ford's behalf as a formality in such a proceeding.

Ford remains jailed on a $1 million bond. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.

Ford also is charged with felonious assault in a nonfatal attack on the couple's teenage daughter, who was stabbed at a party on March 23 and suffered a skull fracture. Police have said Ford dated the girl, and the parents may have objected.

Judge bars attorneys, witnesses from talking publicly about NE Ohio sledgehammer slayings case

A judge says attorneys and others involved in a case about the sledgehammer killings of a northeast Ohio couple can't talk about it outside of court while the case against a suspect proceeds.

The Akron Beacon Journal (http://bit.ly/14Xpmn8 ) reports the gag order from a Summit County judge was not requested by the prosecution or defense for 18-year-old Shawn Ford Jr.

Ford was charged with aggravated murder in the April deaths of 56-year-old attorney Jeffrey Schobert and his 59-year-old wife, Margaret, at their New Franklin home. Ford's attorney had said he'd plead not guilty by reason of insanity.

Ford also is charged in an earlier, nonfatal assault of the couple's teenage daughter. Police say Ford dated the girl.

A 14-year-old boy also was charged in the Schoberts' deaths.

Insanity plea filed in slaying of New Franklin couple

Defense attorneys have filed a written plea of not guilty by reason of insanity in the case of an 18-year-old Akron man indicted on capital murder charges in the April 2 slayings of a prominent New Franklin couple.

The plea was filed Tuesday afternoon in Summit County Common Pleas Court moments before the defendant, Shawn Eric Ford Jr., appeared with his lawyers in a pretrial hearing before Judge Tom Parker.

There were no additional details about the crime, or any possible psychological issues leading up to it, in the brief record of the written plea.

However, defense lawyers Donald R. Hicks and Jonathan T. Sinn informed the court in earlier filings that the young man “has a history of mental health care and treatment.”

    They did not elaborate.

Ford’s arrest was announced by New Franklin police three days after the slayings, which occurred hours apart at the lakeside home of the couple in the Portage Lakes area, investigators said.

A worker at the home found the bodies of Jeffrey Schobert, 56, and his wife, Margaret “Peg” Schobert, 59, in the master bedroom.

According to records filed with the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office, one of the suspected murder weapons was a sledgehammer.

In other developments, Ford now is wearing red-striped jail clothes, the color used by officials to designate violent offenders.

Since his April 4 arrest, Ford had been appearing in court in green stripes — the color designated for inmates under suicide watch in the mental health unit.

As Ford stood in shackles before the bench Tuesday, Parker remarked to his lawyers: “I do see he’s in a different color, so that’s a good sign.”

Much of the remainder of the hearing dealt with the procedures of Ford’s competency and insanity evaluation.

Parker assured his attorneys that he will grant one, probably as early as next week.

However, it is not certain whether the evaluation will be done by the Summit County court system’s Psycho-Diagnostic Clinic, or by an independent psychological expert chosen by the defense and also paid for by the state.

Hicks informed the court that he has been talking to several private experts, but has been unable thus far to secure one.

A court order is in place, prohibiting all parties directly involved in the case from commenting on any details outside of court proceedings.

Authorities have said only that Ford was the boyfriend of 18-year-old Chelsea Schobert, a daughter of the victims.

Jeff Schobert was a prominent area attorney in medical malpractice cases, and his wife was well known as a volunteer with various Summit County charitable organizations.

Another Akron teenager, a 14-year-old boy, is in custody at the county’s juvenile detention center as a suspected accomplice in the slayings. The second teen, under Ohio law, cannot face the death penalty.

Details emerge in double-murder of New Franklin couple during hearing for alleged juvenile accomplice

Court testimony has shown that a 14-year-old Akron boy arrested in connection with the slayings of a prominent New Franklin couple allegedly led police to gloves and a knife from the crime scene.

Details about the horrific circumstances of the April 2 crime are emerging this week in a Summit County Juvenile Court hearing to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to transfer the case of Jamal Vaughn, a co-defendant in the slayings, to adult court.

Prosecutors are expected to present forensic evidence Tuesday afternoon from the autopsies of the victims as the hearing continues before Judge Linda Tucci Teodosio, court officials said.

The principal defendant, Shawn Eric Ford Jr., 18, has been indicted on capital murder charges. Police arrested him three days after the bodies of Jeffrey Schobert, 56, and his wife, Margaret “Peg” Schobert, 59, were found bludgeoned to death inside the master bedroom of their Rex Lake Drive home in the Portage Lakes area.

According to investigative records, police recovered a sledgehammer in close proximity to the bodies.

In the juvenile court hearing for Vaughn, Ford’s alleged accomplice, recordings of police interviews by Akron and New Franklin detectives showed that Vaughn led investigators to gloves, apparently dumped in West Akron hours after the slayings, and a knife.

Testimony by forensic scientists from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation showed that the blood of Jeff Schobert was found on the knife.

Vaughn also told detectives, initially, that he was in the basement of the Rex Lake Drive home when Ford allegedly used a brick and sledgehammer to beat the victims. But in a follow-up interview with Vaughn’s mother present, court testimony showed, he admitted he also was in the bedroom and inflicted puncture wounds to Jeff Schobert.

Vaughn also said in the police interviews, in what now appears to firm up a crucial element in the case, that he and Ford walked to the Schoberts’ home from Akron and that it took them about two hours to get there.

Under Ohio law, Vaughn cannot face the death penalty because of his status as a juvenile.

Ford was the former boyfriend of one of two daughters the Schoberts adopted. His capital murder trial is pending in Summit County Common Pleas Court.
