Garland teen indicted for slaying of 7-Eleven clerk, other charges

A Dallas County grand jury indicted a 19-year-old Garland man Monday on three charges, including a capital murder charge in connection with the slaying of a 7-Eleven clerk in January.

Colten Jon Moore is accused of killing Yosef Tulu on Jan. 21 in the convenience store in the 2500 block of Firewheel Parkway. Moore was also indicted on an aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon charge and an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge for separate incidents.

Police said in court documents that Moore shot Tulu in the back of the head with a .22-caliber rifle after making the clerk lie down on the floor and put his arms in front of him. Moore then shot Tulu a second time after the head shot, police said.

During an interview with detectives, Moore admitted to the shooting and also said he had shot a clerk at another convenience store the week before. That man lived, but suffered two gunshot wounds to his torso. Police said Moore was “visibly upset that the victim had only been shot twice and stated that he had shot five (5) times.” Authorities did report recovering five .22-caliber shells from the scene.

He also told detectives that “he would have shot whoever had come across his path,” that night, police said. He also said that on the night of Tulu’s slaying, he “wanted to kill someone,” and that he was going to kill whoever was in the 7-Eleven, according to the documents.

Moore could face the death penalty for the slaying.

Police also said in the documents that Moore claimed to have shot 10 people total. Garland police spokesman Joe Harn said the two shootings are the only ones investigators believed happened right now.

Moore was also indicted after police said he held up a Fossil store at gunpoint in November.

He remains in Dallas County jail in lieu of $1.05 million bail.

"There is a point in the history of a society when it becomes so pathologically soft and tender that among other things it sides even with those who harm it, criminals, and does this quite seriously and honestly. Punishing somehow seems unfair to it, and it is certain that imagining ‘punishment’ and ‘being supposed to punish’ hurts it, arouses fear in it." Friedrich Nietzsche
