Barry Wendell Mosley - California Death Row

    Barry Wendell Mosley

    Facts of the Crime:

Sentenced to death in Los Angeles County on October 30, 2008 in the murders of Shirley Austin and her 17-year-old daughter, Bessie "Mooney" Carter, in 1999. He killed Adrienne Reed a year later. Mosley also raped Carter, Reed and her then-eight-year-old daughter, who survived the attack and testified against Mosley. In the first crime, Mosley went to Austin's home on West 95th Street in the early morning of April 17, 1999, after a night of drinking. The two were friends. The bodies of Austin, 54, and Mooney were found just after dawn by the teenager's father. Mosley killed Reed, 29, the same night he befriended her at a mini-mart and was invited to her home to watch a Los Angeles Lakers game in June 2000. Reed's young daughter woke up in the middle of the night to find her mother nude on the living room floor and Mosley sitting nearby on a couch. Mosley got angry when the girl asked him to help wake up her mom.

Barry Mosley was sent to death row today for killing three women in two Athens-area crimes.

Torrance Superior Court Judge Mark Arnold adopted a jury's recommendation in deciding Mosley should die for the murders.

"In my 36 years in the criminal justice system I have not seen another person as heartless, evil and cruel as this man," Arnold said.

Mosley, 49, killed Shirley Austin and her 17-year-old daughter, Bessie "Mooney" Carter, in 1999. He killed Adrienne Reed a year later.

Mosley also raped Carter, Reed and her then-8-year-old daughter, who survived the attack and testified against Mosley.

The jurors, including some who came to today's sentencing, convicted Mosley on Aug. 19 of three counts of murder and seven special circumstances for the slayings, as well as burglary and rape charges.

Mosley eventually put a blanket over the girl's head, choked her unconscious and raped her.

He was arrested after his palm print was lifted from a bathroom counter.

DNA later linked him to the slayings of Austin and Mooney, as well as several other unsolved rapes in the South Los Angeles area.

He has previous convictions for grand theft, being a felon with a gun and robbery of a Louisiana restaurant - for which he served eight years in prison.

While in jail awaiting trial in this case, he caused riots and attacked sheriff's deputies, according to prosecutors.

During the penalty phase of the trial, Mosley's attorney presented evidence that purported to show Mosley is mentally unstable because of a head injury and an abusive childhood.
