Terrence Sanchez Burney Gets LWOP in 2008 GA Slaying of Joseph Kitchens

Motions were heard in Jones County Superior Court last week in preparation for the upcoming death penalty trial of Tyrone Richardson.

Richardson is charged with co-defendant Terrence Burney in a 2008 murder of 76-year-old Joseph Kitchens. Superior Court Judge James Cline, who will be the judge for the murder trials, heard the June 13 motions.

Burney and Richardson are charged with felony murder, false imprisonment, and burglary.

The state is seeking the death penalty, which is the reason the defendants are being tried separately.

Richardson was represented in Thursday's proceeding by capital public defenders Christian Lamar and Kimberly Staten-Hayes.

District Attorney Fred Bright is prosecuting the case with the aid of Assistant District Attorney Keagan Waystack.

    Accused murderer pleads guilty

One of the two co-defendants facing the death penalty for the murder of an elderly Jones County man pled guilty to the crime Monday.

Tyrone Terrell Richardson entered a guilty plea in Jones County Superior Court, July 29, to one count of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, armed robbery, false imprisonment, and burglary. The charges all stemmed from the Oct. 17, 2008, murder of 76-year-old Joseph Kitchens.

Richardson was charged in the crimes with Terrence Sanchez Burney.

Superior Court Judge James Cline accepted Richardson’s plea and sentenced him to life in prison for the murder charges, 20 years for armed robbery, 10 years for false imprisonment, and 20 years for burglary.

Under Georgia law, the murder counts are merged. Richardson received the maximum sentence for the other charges, but they will run concurrent with the murder charge.

District Attorney Fred Bright represented the state in the court proceeding, and the defendant was represented by capital defense attorneys Kimberly Staten-Hayes and Christian Lamar.

Death penalty trial scheduled January 2015

    The Jones County News

Frustration was evident at a hearing to set the date for the death penalty trial of Terrance Sanchez Burney, who is charged with the 2008 murders of two elderly Jones County men.

Family members of Joseph Kitchens, who was the second man allegedly murdered by Burney and his partner Tyrone Terrell Richardson, were in the courtroom and groaned when the trial date was set for Jan. 12, 2015.

Richardson entered a guilty plea in Jones County Superior Court July 29, 2013, and was sentenced to life in prison for the murder charges, 20 years for armed robbery, 10 years for false imprisonment, and 20 years for burglary.

As part of his plea negotiation, Richardson agreed to testify at Burney’s trial.

Superior Court Judge James Cline appeared as frustrated as the family members at the March 20 proceeding and suggested two dates in 2014, Oct. 27 and Nov. 17, which were rejected by the defendant’s capital defense attorneys, Brad Gardner and Emily Gilbert, citing prior commitments.
