Jury returns verdicts of death in prison murder
A jury has returned death verdicts for two Tehachapi prison inmates who murdered a fellow inmate in May 2009.
Inmate Evan Broderick, 20, was murdered on May 11, 2009, on a concrete exercise yard in the Security Housing Unit at California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi.
The same jury earlier found Travis Frazier and Kenneth Nowlin guilty of first-degree murder. Prosecutors said Frazier stabbed Broderick 24 times with an inmate-manufactured knife while Nowlin held Broderick and punched and kicked him.
Frazier was already serving a sentence of life without the possibility of parole for a 2008 murder conviction, while Nowlin was serving 46 years after being convicted in 2006 of attempted murder of a police officer following earlier convictions for robberies.
Broderick, the man they murdered, was serving a three year sentence out of Sonoma County for grand theft.
"The District Attorney's Office will vigorously prosecute prison homicide cases to ensure the security of the staff and the inmates in Kern County's four prisons," said District Attorney Lisa Green Tuesday, following the end of the trial's penalty phase.
Frazier will be sentenced Aug. 9, and Nowlin will be sentenced July 26.
